Man City look ready to concede title as West Ham exit drop zone

“We could be better,” Guardiola said. “We could be more aggressive in the first half – better control maybe. In the end we need creativity: the cross, the shot, the dribble and we are struggling a bit this season. Something changed, Savinho’s [missed] chance [against Real Madrid], Marc this time. “But it’s not easy: defences in a low block, the transitions teams have. Madrid are more dangerous than West Ham on transition. On set-pieces, Nuno is a master. What can I say to the team? They did everything. They had 21 shots. We have to be better in the final third – that’s all. It has happened many times this season.” The City goal that had briefly given them the lead in the 31st minute was a miscued cross from Bernardo Silva and for all the star quality later unleashed on West Ham there was not much more. Haaland missed a couple of chances, including a ball pushed through the West Ham back line by the substitute Rayan Cherki, who was the game’s silkiest performer. …

Israel Strikes Central Beirut, Expanding Conflict Zone

new video loaded: Israel Strikes Central Beirut, Expanding Conflict Zone transcript Back transcript Israel Strikes Central Beirut, Expanding Conflict Zone The Israeli military launched a new wave of strikes on central Beirut on Thursday, saying it was targeting infrastructure belonging to the militant group Hezbollah. The bombardment crystallized fears that the war was expanding beyond the southern outskirts of Lebanon’s capital. The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for the center part of the city. It’s the first time that they have done so since hostilities escalated. In that time, we’ve seen strikes concentrated in the southern outskirts of Beirut, areas that are known to have a lot of Hezbollah support and be places where Hezbollah holds a lot of sway. Trump administration criticized as thousands of Americans are stranded in war zone

WASHINGTON — In the days after the U.S. and Israel launched an air war against Iran, the State Department issued new advisories warning Americans to reconsider traveling to several countries in the region. By then, it was too late. Thousands of Americans are now stranded in the Middle East as Iran retaliates with drone attacks on U.S. facilities, prompting Democratic lawmakers and current and former State Department officials to sharply criticize the Trump administration for failing to plan for what they say was a predictable scenario. “You would have had far fewer people in harm’s way,” a senior State Department official said on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. U.S. citizens marooned in countries like Jordan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have received conflicting advice from the State Department. They were told to evacuate as soon as possible in some places even though airports were closed. The State Department also advised people to contact U.S. embassies for assistance, only for them to be met with busy signals or …

Yerin Ha on Her First Awards Show, That Bridgerton Bathtub Scene, and Dressing “Out of Your Comfort Zone”

Yerin Ha on Her First Awards Show, That Bridgerton Bathtub Scene, and Dressing “Out of Your Comfort Zone”

Ha has experienced her share of pinch me moments—an encouraging message from K-Pop Demon Hunters star Arden Cho and a social media follow from Trisha Paytas among them. But she’s still weary of her newfound spotlight. “It is super anxiety-inducing. My imposter syndrome was flaring up again last night,” says Ha, “and my agent sent me a video of Eileen Gu, the snowboarder who won the silver for the Olympics.” The athlete’s words resonated with Ha: “You can control what you think. You can control how you think. And therefore, you can control who you are.” The actor said she spent that morning meditating on this topic. “I sat on the balcony with my coffee being proud of how far I’ve come,” said Ha, “that they’ve given me this ambassador position for a reason and that it’s not just all based on luck.” The pep talk helped calm her down, as did snacking on Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups and listening to some Beyoncé. “She has her alter ego, Sasha Fierce, and sometimes I have to …

Girls rarely experience the “friend zone,” psychology study finds

Girls rarely experience the “friend zone,” psychology study finds

A new study published in Evolution and Human Behavior provides evidence that the tendency for young men to mistake friendliness for sexual interest strengthens gradually throughout their teenage years. The research also suggests that when adolescent girls express romantic interest, boys rarely dismiss it as mere friendliness. Together, these findings help explain how romantic misunderstandings develop during adolescence and mirror the dynamics often seen in heterosexual adults. In evolutionary psychology, a framework called Error Management Theory proposes that adults have built up specific biases to handle the uncertainty of dating. This theory suggests that men tend to overperceive sexual interest so they do not miss out on rare mating opportunities. Failing to notice a sexual opportunity carries a high reproductive cost for men. On the other hand, women tend to underperceive sexual interest. This underperception bias helps them gently brush off unwanted suitors without causing conflict and protects their social reputation from rumors. While these patterns are well documented in adults, scientists did not know at what age these psychological adaptations activate. Because adolescents experience …

Zone 2 Cardio Is Trending. But Is It Really Better for You?

Zone 2 Cardio Is Trending. But Is It Really Better for You?

“Run slow to run fast” goes the Zone 2 rallying cry that has taken the fitness internet by storm. Over the last three years, this once-obscure sports-science concept has become gospel for many recreational athletes. Running influencers and health podcasters frequently talk about the benefits of low-intensity exercise. Many runners are slowing down their “easy” runs. And TikTokers are promoting incline walking (like the 12-3-30 workout) as the key to fat loss, longevity, and hormonal balance. Keeping your heart rate low—about 60% to 70% of your max—seems to have become a near-universal goal for the health-conscious. Zone 2, in case you somehow missed the wave, refers to low-intensity cardio where you keep your heart rate just below your aerobic threshold (the point where your body shifts from primarily burning fat to using carbohydrates for fuel.) While doing it, it’s easy enough to hold a conversation, but hard enough to feel like you’re exercising. And, as an exercise category, it has been praised for building mitochondria, improving fat metabolism, and keeping cortisol levels in check (more …

Russia Seized A Dozen Ukrainian Villages In February: ‘Expanding Security Zone’

The Kremlin on Sunday issued an important battlefield update with Russian army chief Valery Gerasimov having newly declared that a dozen more eastern villages were seized in February. “In two weeks of February, despite severe winter conditions, combined forces and military units of the joint task force liberated 12 settlements,” Gerasimov said while visiting Russian troops operating inside Ukraine. Getty Images Gerasimov described Moscow’s forces are advancing toward Sloviansk, the industrial city that has been center of fighting between pro-Kiev and pro-Moscow forces going all the way back to 2014. According to Gerasimov, Russian troops are now roughly 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the city. Gerasimov said Russian forces are “expanding a security zone” along border areas in the northeastern Sumy and Kharkiv regions, where Moscow holds limited footholds. He added that he would confer with senior officers on “further actions in the Dnipropetrovsk direction,” signaling potential expansion of operations beyond currently claimed territories – as quoted in AFP. As also related in TASS: Russian troops liberated 12 settlements in the first half of February, bringing …

Zone 2 Training: Why Long, Easy Workouts Became the Biggest Thing in Fitness

Zone 2 Training: Why Long, Easy Workouts Became the Biggest Thing in Fitness

The broader adoption of Zone 2 training is welcomed by experts. Christle pointed out that it is generally safer and more sustainable than the high intensity interval training fad that preceded it. The best exercise is the type that you can keep doing, after all. For those interested in Zone 2 endurance work, Christle said, it requires a relatively high volume: 1 hour of exercise, 3-4 times a week, for 12 weeks—the length of time it takes to change exercise behavior. It also takes patience—many athletes find low-intensity work boring, and it can be a blow to the ego to spend your entire Saturday jog getting passed. And while there’s an enormous range of heart-rate tracking fitness tech out there, the data-obsessed athlete may struggle to dial their personal Zone 2 into their fitness tracker. San Millán, without naming any specific brands, said that some technology may be able to capture data and assemble sophisticated graphs, but that does not mean they’re representing reality. Dr. Levine went even further. “You should throw everything out the …

Scientists investigate ‘dark oxygen’ in deep-sea mining zone

An experiment on oxygen production by deep-sea nodules The Nippon Foundation Scientists will lower instruments to the seafloor to figure out how metallic nodules are generating oxygen in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, an unexpected phenomenon that has fuelled controversy over deep-sea mining. Researchers, to their surprise, found in 2024 that the potato-sized nodules in the darkness of the Pacific and Indian oceans, including the Pacific’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone, were a source of oxygen, even though it was thought that sunlight and photosynthesis were needed to produce this element on a large scale. This so-called dark oxygen could be supporting life in the darkness at depths of thousands of metres, including microbes, sea cucumbers and carnivorous anemones. Its discovery raised questions about proposals by deep-sea mining companies to vacuum up the nodules from the seafloor and smelt them for cobalt, nickel and manganese. The finding has been disputed by deep-sea mining companies, and other scientists have also called for more evidence. Now the researchers who discovered dark oxygen are going back to the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, …
