The 2026 Golden Globes red carpet emphasized Hollywood’s current tussle between embracing the contemporary, even if everyone mostly wore black and white. Some of the best dressed stars of the evening embraced Old Hollywood dress codes—sober, demure and elegant, like Selena Gomez in Chanel or Connor Storrie in Saint Laurent—playing into our collective nostalgia for the age of the pre-Instagram movie star. Others leaned into what it means to be a contemporary celebrity: Teyana Taylor’s bedazzled Schiaparelli whale tail was the talk of the night, as were Timothée Chalamet’s Timberland boots. It should not be a surprise that they both took home awards that night.
A similar tension was on display at the Grammys. In an age in which viral TikTok influencers can rise to earn nominations for Best New Artist, as is the case of Addison Rae and Alex Warren, two VF staffer favorites, as you might have seen on our live blog from the evening, what do contemporary music stars even wear today? The former seems to have a clear idea, wearing a playful white dress with a hi-low hem from Alaïa, also by Mulier. (The designer announced on Friday that he was exiting the brand, and he is clearly going out with a bang.) See also: Sombr’s fantastic Valentino couture suit by Alessandro Michele—he looked every bit the contemporary rockstar.
Bad Bunny and Sabrina Carpenter both leaned into Old Hollywood tonight, if with a twist. The former wore a corseted tuxedo by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli—a simply fantastic reconsideration of traditional red carpet menswear. It is Roseberry’s first high-profile menswear look for the brand—he’s made made-to-measure pieces for couture clients before—and what a way to start. Carpenter, on her end, wore a sparkly, almost naked dress by Valentino, merging both the kind of old school glamour Hollywood seems to be incurably nostalgic for with the unabashed sex appeal of a modern pop star.
One of my undeniable top looks of the night was Lady Gaga’s Matières Fécales black feathered ensemble—she simply always gets it right. Which one was yours?
