Alessia Russo and Hannah Hampton star for England in narrow win over Iceland – reaction

Hampton said she was just “doing her job” to try and preserve England’s slender lead.

The goalkeeper told ITV Sport: “We know it’s tough. They put more bodies forward, more balls into dangerous areas, so it was nervy at the end but we got the job done.”

When asked about her massive saves, she said: “It’s my job isn’t it really? Let’s be honest.  We’re in it as a team, I can’t be the one scoring goals but I can stop them, so we here we win ass a team and that’s what we pride ourselves on.

“We’re a right pack, they call us, so Lessi [Alessia Russo] got a great finish at one end so I had to do my job at the other.”

Hampton adds: “We would have liked to control the game a bit better than what we did, but we know that they have a lot of threat when they get momentum in their favour, a lot of balls in our box, and set pieces. We know there’s a real threat and they’re dangerous.

“So we need to make sure that we were really solid in our defensive areas, and it was nerve-wracking but obviously it’s a positive result for us.”

On the result itself, she said: “We knew what we wanted to achieve in this game, we knew we wanted ot get the six points out of the two games, so we managed that. That’s a big bonus and we go into the next camp with positivity around us.”
