Governance in the early 2000s was largely understood through the lens of individual governing bodies.
Volunteers joined as parents or members of the local community, motivated by a desire to support the education of children in their area. Recruitment was relatively straightforward: one school, one board, one vacancy at a time.
Today, governance looks very different. In addition to maintained school boards, it spans multi-academy trusts, local governing bodies, committees and college corporations.
