For decades, people have thought the Durupınar Formation, located in Turkey’s Ararat Mountains, is where Noah’s Ark came to ground after the great flood. It is located about 18 miles from what is traditionally referred to as Mount Ararat.

Others suggest it’s just an unusual geological anomaly. But recently researchers stated they have found evidence supporting the idea this was the Ark’s final resting place.
What makes the Durupınar Formation unique is that it is not only boat shaped, but it also matches the Biblical dimensions of Noah’s ark. The Bible states that it was ‘300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high’ (Genesis 6:15). This makes it approximately 515 feet in length, 86 feet wide and 52 feet tall.
According to the Biblical account, after God decided to judge the world with a flood, Noah was instructed to build an Ark which would preserve his family and two of every creature. This would effectively be a restart of humanity.
The Bible also stated that Noah’s Ark settled in the Ararat Mountains (plural), after the waters receded. It was not on a specific mountain (Genesis 8:4).
According to the Biblical record, the ark carried a pair of every animal, bird and reptile alive on the world at that time. This would require stalls, hallways and compartments. There would also need to be rooms for Noah and his extended family.
According to the Daily Mail, American researchers using ground-penetrating radar found evidence of this beneath the formation.
Lead researcher, Andrew Jones, announced they discovered what appears to be a series of corridors and voids (rooms). One long corridor ran the length of the ship.
“What’s interesting is that these voids are lining up below the ground – and they’re not just random,” said Jones in an interview with GB News. “These tunnels also follow a pattern. GPR is just a way to look below the soil using radar.”
Secondly, there seems to be three distinct layers suggesting there are three floors. This fits the Biblical description as God told Noah to “make it with lower, second, and third decks” (Genesis 6:16)
Jones added that other researchers, using infrared thermography (IRT) found evidence of the boat’s keel. IRT is used to detect underground structures.
Though it seems impossible for a single boat to contain all the world’s animals, birds and reptiles. physics students an England’s University of Leicester concluded that there more than enough room.
Based on their calculations, the ark could hold the equivalent of 2.15 million sheep. A sheep is the considered the average size of all the animal, bird, and reptile life on earth.
As Biblical scholars often point out, Noah was told to take every ‘kind’ of creature (Genesis 6:20). This meant that Noah only needed to take one set of canine, instead of a pair of foxes, wolves, dingoes, coyotes, etc.
It is estimated that there are between 21,000 to 35,000 different species of animals, birds and reptiles today. So the Ark had more than enough room.
For the larger animals, juveniles would have worked instead of full-grown adults.
Curiously, the Sumerians (Babylonians) had a similar story of the great flood and a boat that saved the world’s creatures. This shouldn’t surprise us because cultures and languages did not develop until after the Tower of Babel. This means everything prior to Babel, including the flood, would be common history to all.
In 2024, researchers at London’s British Museum translated an ancient Babylonian tablet in their collection. They found that one side actually had a map which showed the location of the ark.
It was located in place called ‘Urartu,’ which is the equivalent of Ararat in the Bible. People were actually given directions so they could see it for themselves.
“From the Babylonian point of view, this was a matter of fact thing,” said, British Museum curator Dr. David Finkel in an interview with CBN.
Whether the Duripinar formation is the final resting place of Noah’s ark will only be determined if the Turkey government allows archaeologists to excavate the actual site.
