UK Gilt Yields Near 30-Year Highs As Political/Geopolitical Fears Spark Trussian Chaos

UK Gilt Yields Near 30-Year Highs As Political/Geopolitical Fears Spark Trussian Chaos

Anyone has been in the bond markets for more than a minute remembers the fall of 2022 when UK PM Liz Truss was unceremoniously dumped by her own party after serving 45 days in office as the Gilts market collapsed at unprecedented speed amid economic chaos triggered by her ‘mini-budget’ (and multiple ministerial resignations). The reason we reminisce is that this morning – after a long-weekend closed – UK Gilt yields are soaring once again… to their highest level since 1998 (and are a stunning 80bps above the Trussian highs) as worries intensified over local government elections and the impact of soaring energy prices on the economy. While bond investors around the world have signaled their discontent with faster inflation and potentially higher interest rates, the UK stands out as the most extreme example. As Bloomberg reports, the combination of Britain’s messy political landscape, with unpopular Prime Minister Keir Starmer likely to face a leadership challenge, feeble economy and strained government finances have made it a target for traders looking for a weak link. “The …

Netanyahu’s 30-year obsession with Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears on a television screen in the White House press room in Washington, on February 28, 2026. JONATHAN ERNST / REUTERS On February 19, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed 500 future army officers at Bahad 1, a military academy in the Negev Desert. The entire general staff and Israel’s highest-ranking officials were in attendance for the induction ceremony of the fresh-faced officers. “From Gaza to Yemen, from Lebanon to Iran, anyone who attacked us, felt the weight of our arm,” the prime minister said, before giving a detailed account of the country’s increasingly offensive military doctrine. “If someone still hasn’t noticed, there are several important changes here in Israel’s security doctrines,” added Netanyahu, who has led the country for a total of 18 years dating back to 1996. He contrasted what he called the “defensive” vision of Israel’s founders with his own expansionist approach, shaped by the shocking military and terrorist offensive led by Hamas on October 7, 2023. “We went far beyond the borders of the state, to …

Danny O’Shea and Ellie Kam are on a mission to spread joy at the Olympics — and it’s been going well so far. In their Olympic debut last weekend, they scored a personal best in their free skate, outperforming expectations to help the U.S. win gold in the team event by a single point. “I wanted to cry, but I couldn’t because I was so happy, so then we both ended up screaming at each other,” Kam said. “[Joy] is something that we discussed as a team, just trying to enjoy every single moment. I think the crowd could feel it.” It’s been a long time coming for O’Shea, who turned 35 on Friday. O’Shea skated competitively for …

Today, we’re answering one of them. Submit your question below. At 69, Norman Schenck is preparing to retire. He and his wife, Lorie Schenck, 67, live in a Detroit suburb and are hoping to relocate to central Ohio to be closer to their grandchildren. For about the past two decades in Michigan, they’ve been renting a condo. But in this new chapter of their lives, they’re facing a huge decision: Do they put a big chunk of their retirement down to buy a house in the new location, or continue to rent? “It’s a very daunting question, and it’s a complicated one when you do the math,” Norman says. One of the things he has enjoyed about renting, he says, is “the grass is cut, the snow is removed and all those things are taken care of …

Home Ownership: Madness Over 30-Year Mortgages

Home Ownership: Madness Over 30-Year Mortgages

I have argued over and over (for example, here, here, and here) that large language models (LLMs) create an illusion of intelligence but are, in fact, prone to making logical and factual errors. That makes it risky to rely on them when the costs of mistakes are substantial. As a lifelong finance professor and investor, I have noted that LLMs can give bad financial advice and that AI-powered ETFs and mutual funds have substantially underperformed the S&P 500. Several correspondents have pointed out that humans make mistakes too, which is undeniable. For example, the Wall Street Journal recently published an op-ed with the provocative title, “The Case Against 30-Year Mortgages.” The article itself was even more provocative — and wrongheaded. The author argued that the reason millennials are struggling to buy homes is “an insidious financial instrument so predatory and deceptive that it has warped the housing market for nearly a century. Ladies and gentlemen, I present the 30-year mortgage.” The author went on: “The mortgage isn’t the foundation of the American Dream. It’s the …
