Physicists say the mysterious X(2370) particle contains the strongest evidence yet for a glueball, an exotic state made predominantly from gluons. Its mass, quantum properties, unusual decay behavior and lack of clear quark flavor all match major predictions for the lightest pseudoscalar glueball. The evidence is unusually comprehensive, but researchers still want more decay measurements to determine how much ordinary quark matter may be mixed into X(2370). For nearly half a century, physicists have searched for a particle made not from quarks, but from the force carriers that bind quarks together. Now, the BESIII Collaboration says X(2370) may finally provide the clearest evidence yet. The result centers on a long-standing prediction of quantum chromodynamics, or QCD, the theory of the strong interaction. QCD describes how quarks and gluons behave inside particles such as protons and neutrons. Unlike photons, which carry the electromagnetic force, gluons can interact with each other. (RNS) — New Yorkers expecting to see Knicks celebrations and visitors in town for the World Cup were surprised Saturday (June 13) to encounter a series of colorful chariots adorned with jewel-toned balloons, surrounded by thousands of singing and chanting worshippers. More than 25,000 devotees of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) attended the parade, according to organizers. Worshippers wrapped in silk saris and patterned tunics pulled three 25-foot-high chariots displaying the statues of Krishna, his older brother Balarama and his younger sister Subhadra down Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. The procession marked the 50-year anniversary of ISKCON’s first Ratha Yatra, or “Chariot Journey.” With over 1 million devotees in more than 80 countries, ISKCON has historic roots in Hinduism but places itself under Gaudiya Vaishnavism, a monotheistic tradition within Hinduism dating back to 15th century India. The Milky Way’s central black hole has long posed an awkward problem. By every standard picture of how black holes behave, Sagittarius A* should be blowing material back into space as it feeds. Yet for more than half a century, astronomers could not find clear evidence that it was doing so. Now they say that missing wind has finally turned up. A team at Northwestern University used years of observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, or ALMA, in Chile to build an unusually sharp map of the cold gas crowding the black hole’s neighborhood. In that map, they found a broad, cone-shaped cavity carved out of molecular gas within about one parsec, or roughly three light-years, of Sagittarius A*. The researchers argue that only a hot wind from the black hole can explain the feature. Therefore, this offers what they describe as the clearest evidence yet that the Milky Way’s central black hole is not an exception to the usual rules. For minerologists, a mine is an invitation. The earth has been broken open, its veins laid bare – and those who enter hope to find unknown wonders. In the 1970s, Kali Kafi mine near the small Iranian town of Anarak fulfilled that hope. There, among the dusty desert rocks, Joachim Otteman and Darius Adib saw a bluish-green glow. They took samples of the glassy mineral and analysed its structure back in the lab. What they knew was that this geological species had never been catalogued – they named it anarakite, and it lay forgotten for decades. What they didn’t know was that the emerald glow they unearthed may have been hiding a remarkable quantum secret. This isn’t any ordinary rock. Anarakite – later renamed herbertsmithite – could be a rare type of matter known as a quantum spin liquid (QSL). Whether these occur naturally is hotly debated, but if the physicists who think they can are right, nature could be creating highly entangled states. The Rujm el-Hiri, located on a large basalt plateau in the Golan Heights, is a large ring of stones that has been an isolated archaeological site for decades. Scholars debated its purpose endlessly, whether it was a burial site, a ceremonial gathering place, an astronomical observatory, or something else entirely. What nobody seriously entertained was that it might simply be the largest and best-preserved example of a much broader regional tradition. Turns out, that is exactly what it is. Using new research, Dr. Michal Birkenfeld and colleagues from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev conducted an analysis indicating that more than 28 other stone circles have been found within approximately 25 km of Rujm el-Hiri. This new evidence shows that archaeologists are shifting their view of the site, from an isolated structure to part of a larger tradition of stone circles that had previously gone unnoticed. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. — Mike and Patricia McCoy answered the door of their cozy cottage in Imperial Beach, a short stroll from crashing waves and several blocks from the Tijuana River Estuary, where California meets Mexico and the hiking trails are named for them.
