Mystery Deepens As Spy Aircraft Disappears From US Air Base Without Explanation

An SR-71 Blackbird parked for years on an outdoor display at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center is no longer visible in commercial satellite imagery, and the agency has offered no public explanation of where it went. The spy aircraft, the NASA 844, has been absent from its pad since at least May 17, according to Aviation Week. Sources told the publication that the plane was moved into a hangar earlier this year for an inspection, though NASA has not described what that inspection involves, why it is taking place, or how long it will last. The Serial 61-7980 was the last SR-71 built and the last to fly, completing its final flight in 1999 after the Air Force had already retired the type and NASA had retained a few surviving airframes for high-speed research. Lockheed Martin produced 32 of the reconnaissance aircraft, 12 of which were lost in accidents and none to enemy action. Questions about the disappearance of the SR-71 come a week after NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman discussed plans for a new high-altitude, high-speed X-plane and displayed …

RAF training aircraft crashes in Wales – two pilots injured after ejecting | UK News

Two RAF pilots are being treated for minor injuries after ejecting from a training aircraft that crashed in Wales. The Hawk T2 aircraft had been flying out of the RAF Valley station on Anglesey when it plummeted to the ground in the nearby Pencarnisiog area. “Two pilots are being treated for what are thought to be minor injuries and at this stage there are no reports of any wider damage or injuries,” North Wales Police said. A video of the crash shared on social media appears to show the pilots ejecting from the plane before it nosedives and crashes in flames. Footage shows a plume of smoke and a blaze erupting as the aircraft hits the ground, appearing to narrowly miss residential properties. Image: RAF jet crash in RAF Valley station, North Wales. US sells helicopters to Argentina after Trump Falklands comment | World | News

It added the sale would improve Argentina’s ability to “meet current and future threats”. The announcement comes amid rising tensions between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands. After Mr Trump’s comments last week, Argentinian President Javier Milei used a national address to reiterate his country’s “historic” claim to the Falklands. He claimed Buenos Aires “needs to recover” the “Argentinian” islands and that he would introduce sanctions on any oil companies working in the area. The Government has said sovereignty of the Falklands is “non-negotiable”. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told MPs the UK would be “relentless” in defending the Falkland Islanders’ right to be British. The islands’ population overwhelmingly favour remaining British. Mr Trump again waded into the Falklands dispute as he visited Dublin on Saturday. The US President claimed he could “settle” any conflict over the archipelago in the South Atlantic. “I’m sure I’ll be called into that potential disaster, but if they do, I’ll probably be able to settle, settle it out,” he claimed as he spoke to reporters alongside Irish …

Lachy Groom backs Indian startup aiming to keep aircraft aloft for a year

Prominent solo investor Lachy Groom has backed a Bengaluru startup attempting an ambitious feat: keeping an aircraft in the sky for more than a year by harvesting energy from ocean winds. Alteon, founded by 20-year-old Samay Sanghvi, announced Tuesday that it raised $2.5 million in a pre-seed round led by Groom, with participation from Together Fund, to develop autonomous aircraft inspired by dynamic soaring, a technique albatrosses use to extract energy from the wind. Groom decided he wanted to invest within the first 30 minutes of their first meeting, Sanghvi told TechCrunch. Conventional aircraft need to carry the fuel or battery power required for a flight. Alteon is trying to break that limitation by designing its small, fixed-wing autonomous aircraft that can extract energy from wind shear above the ocean through dynamic soaring — a maneuver in which an aircraft repeatedly moves between layers of air traveling at different speeds. “Once you build airplanes that can stay in the air for more than a year, there are millions of things you can do with them,” …

An integrated CNS solution for low-altitude aircraft

An integrated CNS solution for low-altitude aircraft

The ANTENNAE project is developing an innovative integrated CNS solution for aircraft operating at low altitude The ANTENNAE project explores the applicability of 3GPP 5G and next-generation hybrid terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks for providing Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) services to aircraft operating at low altitude. The ANTENNAE project is exploring a 3GPP-compliant integrated CNS solution for Innovative Air Mobility (IAM), including piloted and U-space operations at low altitude. The solution will support safe low-altitude air traffic by providing reliable, affordable communication, navigation, and surveillance services to ensure strict adherence to flight paths, real-time traffic separation, and robust airspace boundary protection. Why legacy CNS is not enough for low-altitude aviation CNS is designed to provide three separate services: “C” – Communication, “N” – Navigation, and “S” – Surveillance. However, all three services rely on one common thing: wireless network infrastructure and its coverage. We need radio signals for the timely exchange of information between aircraft, between aircraft and the ground, and sometimes between ground systems. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals help aircraft safely navigate …

Navy discusses renaming aircraft carrier after Trump instead of heroic Black sailor

Navy discusses renaming aircraft carrier after Trump instead of heroic Black sailor

Navy leadership is discussing renaming a Navy aircraft carrier after President Donald Trump, according to two U.S. officials. The ship, which is still under construction, has been set to be named the USS Doris Miller in honor of an enlisted sailor who famously staffed an anti-aircraft gun during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during World War II despite not having been trained on the weapon. Miller, a mess attendant, grabbed the gun during the attack and is credited with shooting down at least one Japanese plane and dragging wounded U.S. sailors to safety. Miller was the first Black service member to receive the Navy Cross — the Navy’s second-highest honor. Admiral Chester W. US fighter aircraft mysteriously ‘flying near Russian border’ as WW3 fears explode | World | News

An American fighter jet is flying near the Russian border, close to the Kaliningrad region, state media in Moscow has claimed, as fears of a conflict between NATO and Russia soar. A source in the EU’s air traffic control services told Russian news agency TASS that the aircraft was detected over neutral waters in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday. German outlet Die Welt added that reconnaissance aircraft and fighter jets from NATO countries were spotted near Russia’s Kaliningrad Region and in northern Norway. The aircraft included an E-3A Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) aircraft, a US electronic warfare aircraft, and Norwegian fighter jets, the outlet added. Open-source flight tracking data showed at least five tankers, two NATO E-3A Sentry AWACS aircraft, and a G550 Conformal Airborne Early Warning aircraft. Six USAF F-35A Lightning II aircraft operating out of RAF Lakenheath and a Turkish Air Force E-7 were also tracked yesterday. Polish ground forces and other units also participated in the drills led by the US. A NATO spokesperson said: “NATO is a defence alliance, …
