In broadcasting terms, it was certainly that – a project of unprecedented scope and patience, exploring the lives of 14 people from disparate class backgrounds at seven-year intervals, from childhood up until the age of 70. For the bulk of its run, the “experiment” was steered by documentarian Michael Apted, a researcher on the original Seven Up! who directed every entry from 7 Plus Seven (1970) through to 63 Up (2019). Since Apted’s death in 2021, directorial duties have passed to Asif Kapadia, the Oscar-winning director of profile documentaries Amy and Senna. 70 Up, the final entry in the series, finds the surviving participants mostly retired, in a mode of hyperopic reminiscence. In the wake of Jimmy King’s (Nick Miles) heartbreaking death, Sadie informed Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) that she had been in a relationship with Jimmy for the last three years. But as Sadie’s card was declined in The Hide, we realised she may just be up to her old tricks – getting her hands on other people’s money. Assuming Sarah was upset about Charity being charged with involuntary manslaughter for Doctor Caitlin Todd’s (Caroline Harker) death, Jacob tried to buoy his wife by reminding her that their little girl would get her through it all. But Jacob has no idea that Sarah accidentally killed Todd herself, and Charity has taken the blame out of guilt. Joe wasn’t the violent and untrustworthy man that she’d been led to believe. Upon returning to the marquee on the Home Farm Estate, Dawn pledged her allegiance to him, hoping that he would go ahead with the ceremony. Just seconds later, Jimmy’s car plowed through the side of the tent, causing mass destruction. Very sadly, he passed away while talking to wife Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) about their vow renewal plans. Their weapons of choice? Joe’s blushing bride Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) and her ex-husband Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle). Caleb and Ruby have fanned Dawn’s suspicion that Joe was behind the mysterious attack on Billy. Billy was quick to believe it, especially given his almost-kiss with Dawn. It’s not just Joe who is caught up in Caleb and Ruby’s plans. Jimmy King (Nick Miles) reluctantly sold his family business to the unscrupulous pair so he could afford to buy his son premium university accommodation. Resigned, Jimmy reaffirmed his love to his wife Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) and suggested renewing their vows. Neither had any idea what was in store. On the wedding day, Dawn was discovered trying to run away by Joe’s mentor …
