Adnan Beci | Afp | Getty Images Thousands protested in Albania’s capital over the weekend for one of the largest rallies yet against a proposed luxury development project linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Protesters in Tirana were seen carrying Albanian flags and banners saying “Albania is not for sale” on Saturday as they marched toward the office of Prime Minister Edil Rama, calling for his resignation and reportedly chanting against the Socialist Party government. Further protests took place in the western city of Vlora on Sunday as demonstrations continued into their 22nd consecutive day. The primary focus of the demonstrations is a proposed multi-billion-euro tourism project on Albania’s Adriatic coast, a development supported by Kushner’s Affinity Partners. The protests have since fused with wider public anger over opaque real estate deals and alleged government corruption. This aerial photograph shows protestors gathering in front …

new video loaded: Albanians Protest Corruption and Kushner-Linked Resort transcript Back transcript Albanians Protest Corruption and Kushner-Linked Resort For more than three weeks, thousands of Albanians have been protesting a planned luxury hotel development on the Adriatic coast that is partially financed by President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. This prime minister should leave. And it’s not about any more flamingos. It’s about healthcare. It’s about education. It’s about people getting poorer and poorer every day. It’s about people leaving their country because they don’t want to live here. It started as a protest because of the investment that’s happening in Sazan and Narta Lagoon from Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. It started because of that, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. Now we’re protesting for our rights and for a new Albania. It is about a private property. It is not about a land that is public. And the Albanian government is giving by selling out the country. For more than three weeks, thousands of Albanians have been protesting a planned luxury …

In Albania, Protesters Rally Against Multi-Billion-Dollar Luxury Resort Backed by Jared Kushner

The light of 6:00 p.m. casts a glow on the facade of the government building in the capital city of Albania, Tirana. In front of the building housing the office of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, traffic flows along a detour marked by barriers. A river of people marching from Skanderbeg Square is gathering here in front of the building, waving red flags bearing a two-headed black eagle in the center—the country’s historic symbol, associated with the national hero George Castriota Skanderbeg, after whom the square was also named. There are families, elderly people, young people, children in strollers, a soundtrack of whistles and drums. A red staircase appears in the middle of the street, carried by some protesters: they have a microphone, a speaker, and a generator to power it all. One by one, students, retirees, and activists climb those few steps to address the crowd. The Albanian revolution begins like this, with a red staircase placed in the street in front of Prime Minister Edi Rama’s office. “We’re not just defending the lagoon,” …

Albania’s Rama Vows to Push on With Kushner-Linked Luxury Resort Despite Protests

Albania’s Rama Vows to Push on With Kushner-Linked Luxury Resort Despite Protests

TIRANA, June 8 (Reuters) – Albania will plough on with a luxury resort planned by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on a remote stretch of Balkan coast despite persistent protests over its environmental impact, Prime Minister Edi Rama told Reuters on Monday. Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the capital Tirana and on the southern coast where the resort has been proposed, calling for the project to be scrapped because ‌of the impact on a protected wetland home ‌to flamingoes, seals and sea turtle nesting sites. The flamingo has emerged as the movement’s symbol: protesters hoist inflatable pink birds and signs saying “Flamingo Revolution”.  Rama is unmoved, telling Reuters that the developers will “stun” onlookers with their plans in the coming months and that parts of the resort could be open to the public before the end of the decade.  “I’m telling you, it’s going to be a beautiful project and we’re going to do it and we’re going to be proud to contribute to Europe,” Rama said during an interview in …

Kushner luxury resort plan sparks mass protests in Albania

Ivanka Trump, Trump’s daughter who is married to Kushner, has promoted the project several times since it was announced in 2024. “It’s an unbelievable, beautiful” private island in the middle of the Mediterranean, she told business podcaster David Senra in an interview last week. Developers have said their focus will be “responsible stewardship and environmental enhancement.” Vorpsey said the plan was about “urbanizing and transforming completely a natural area.” The plans announced by Kushner in 2024 also included an investment to build a luxury hotel at a former army headquarters in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The Belgrade project was canceled after street protests last year. White House press spokesperson Anna Kelly told NBC News that Kushner is a “volunteer” and his private business activities “have nothing to do with the President or the administration.” Asked whether Rama’s government had greenlighted the project as a way to gain favor with Trump, she said: “This is the same, tired narrative that Democrats have pushed against President Trump, his family, and his administration for a decade.” Rama, Affinity …

Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images HELSINKI, Finland — Finnish President Alexander Stubb has outlined his vision for a much larger European Union, saying the 27-nation bloc needs to “think big” and seize the moment to project power on the global stage. Speaking at an energy conference in the Finnish capital on Wednesday, Stubb said the EU should push to increase its membership to 40 states and named the U.K., Canada, Turkey, Norway and Iceland as potential candidates to join. His comments come as the Trump administration’s actions, alongside Russia’s war with Ukraine, prompt some countries to reconsider the benefits of EU membership. Stubb told the Eurelectric Power Summit that “the window of opportunity” for EU enlargement “is quite short because when the war in Ukraine ends and perhaps when the U.S. administration changes, I don’t know, then people are going to take their foot off the gas pedal and …
