Collectors Sue Alison Jacques After Artist’s Estate Cancels Sale

Two Swedish-American buyers are suing London’s Alison Jacques gallery, accusing breach of contract over the sale of three works by the Swedish-born artist Monica Sjöö, whose estate Jacques represents. The estate and the gallery say that Marie St. Germain, the adviser to Yoed and Natasha Anise, misrepresented the couple ahead of the purchase; they also claim that they believe the Anises would not be promising stewards of the artist’s works, the Art Newspaper (TAN) reports. The Anises, who paid £264,000 (about $358,000) for three paintings from the 1990s, split their time between Stockholm and Austin, Texas, and operate a tech company.  Related Articles The paintings in question had been included in a retrospective dedicated to Sjöö, “The Great Cosmic Mother,” which opened at the Moderna Musseet in Stockholm in 2023. Born in Sweden in 1938, Sjöö spent the majority of her life in Bristol, England. Sjöö, who died from cancer at 66 in 2005, described herself as a “radical anarcho/eco-feminist and Goddess artist, writer and thinker involved in Earth spirituality.” Her best-known painting, God Giving …

High Line and CHANEL Culture Fund Commission Alison Nguyen Film

The High Line and the Chanel Culture Fund have commissioned artist Alison Nguyen to create a new film examining the overlooked history of one of New York’s best-known cultural landmarks. Prior Occupants, as Nguyen’s work is titled, is the fifth installment in the High Line Originals series and the second produced in partnership with the luxury brand’s arts initiative. The film will premiere on September 8 and screen daily through early November on the High Line Channel, the park’s public video space at 14th Street. Rather than focusing on the High Line itself, Nguyen turns her attention to the nearby Westbeth Artist Housing, a former Bell Laboratories complex where talking movies, television, and other technological breakthroughs were developed and where part of the Manhattan Project’s research for the atomic was once conducted. In 1970, it was converted into affordable artist housing, whose notable past tenants have included Robert De Niro Sr. and Diane Arbus. The film draws on archival materials, interviews with residents, and choreographed performances to explore how traces of that industrial past continue …

Fun Home review – Alison Bechdel’s musical memoir feels every emotion | Musicals

Fun Home review – Alison Bechdel’s musical memoir feels every emotion | Musicals

The “fun” in the title is short for funeral, a reference to the family undertaking business inherited by Alison Bechdel’s father. But there is some fun, too, in this heart-filled musical adaptation of the cartoonist’s illustrated memoir. First seen in the UK in 2018 and now revived by director Sarah Frankcom in a fluid in-the-round staging, it brings a light touch to a story freighted with emotion. Published in 2006, the graphic novel describes the author’s sexual awakening – she kissed a girl and she liked it – one that coincided with the discovery of her father’s clandestine gay life. In the musical adaptation by Lisa Kron (book and lyrics) and Jeanine Tesori (music), it becomes a layered reckoning of past and present, as the 43-year-old Bechdel (Jodie McNee) reflects on her student self (Alice Audrey O’Hanlon) reflecting on her childhood self (Felicity Moore at my performance). Each has her own perspective on her conflicted father (Nigel Harman), who is at turns charming, narcissistic and brutal – and dominates her imagination. Their mother (Alex Young) …

Dustin Hoffman and Alison Brie Lead Drama

Dustin Hoffman and Alison Brie Lead Drama

Movies about writers face a rare challenge: After all, how cinematic is it to show someone tormented by a blank page or an unresponsive computer? The Oscar-winning Capote had the dramatic advantage of a protagonist investigating a horrific mass murder. But that was an exception. Defying those difficulties, Alex Vlack’s The Revisionist, a Tribeca world premiere, gives us not one but four main characters who are published or aspiring writers. Suffice it to say that the spectacle, while not exactly comparable to watching paint dry, is not always scintillating. The Revisionist The Bottom Line Hoffman saves the day — and the movie. Venue: Tribeca Festival (Spotlight Narrative)Cast: Alison Brie, André Holland, Tom Sturridge, Dustin HoffmanDirector-screenwriter: Alex Vlack 1 hour 30 minutes It definitely helps to have four such gifted actors engaged in the endeavor. We first meet old friends John, played by André Holland, and Jacob, portrayed by Tom Sturridge, when they accidentally run into each other after a long separation. Jacob is married to Elise, played by Alison Brie, who is struggling with her …
