A man was buried alive after a trench collapsed on him while he worked on a construction site. Gheorghita Arsene, 33, was working in Banstead, Surrey, in 2020, when a trench collapsed and covered him in soil. His mother, Ienuta, said that Geo phoned her earlier in the day, saying he was afraid that the ditch – which was 10ft deep – would cave in. When he was clearing soil, one of the walls collapsed. A colleague ran for help while others tried to dig him out. Fire and ambulance crews were called, but efforts to revive Geo were hindered by the weight of the soil and difficulties in digging him out. Inspectors found the trench did not have any supports and excavated soil had been deposited unsafely close to it. Now, two companies have been found guilty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 following a three-month trial. The now-defunct Appledorn Developments was fined £500,000 and T Vaughan Limited (TVL) was fined £650,000, plus £40,000 in costs. Contracts manager Anthony O’Connor admitted …

Nepal’s emergency crews have pulled two workers out of a hydropower tunnel where they had been trapped for nine days. The rescue comes more than a week after flash flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border killed more than 1,200 people. Even in a region known for its dead shopping malls, Hawthorne Plaza holds a unique distinction. It has been closed longer than it was ever open, and the sprawling property in the center of the South Bay suburb has been the subject of debate and fascination for decades. It opened along Hawthorne Boulevard in 1977, at the height of the mall-boom years, as every city wanted its air-conditioned main street anchored by department stores and plenty of parking. But Hawthorne Plaza faltered earlier than most, shutting down in 1999 and remaining eerily preserved. The mall still has huge signs for the Broadway and Montgomery Ward, two once-famous department stores that went out of business decades ago. Burning Man continues to be an icon of counterculture but attending the festival that relies on visitors to be self-sufficient to a high degree is expensive. As Statista’s Katharina Buchholz reports, the personal income of the average attendee has changed in recent years as the festival has become popular among well-to-do crowds.
