Police charge a third suspect in a Melbourne synagogue arson allegedly directed by Iran

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Police charged a third suspect on Friday with an arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue that was allegedly directed by Iran. The 20-year-old man was one of three masked offenders who broke into the Adass Israel Synagogue, doused the interior with flammable liquid then set it alight in the early hours of Dec. 6, 2024, a police statement alleged. The fire caused extensive damage to the synagogue and a worshipper sustained minor injuries. The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which brings together federal and state police with a spy agency, charged the man, who has not been named, with offenses including arson. He was charged in a Melbourne jail where he was already being held in custody on unrelated offenses. Police declined to elaborate on those offenses. His co-accused Giovanni Laulu, 21, was arrested in July last year and another suspect, Younes Ali Younes, 20, was arrested a month later. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last year accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guard of directing the synagogue fire and an arson attack two months …

Cybercriminals allegedly hacked tens of thousands of Fortinet firewalls used by major companies all over the world

Cybercriminals allegedly hacked tens of thousands of Fortinet firewalls used by major companies all over the world

Cybercriminals have compromised tens of thousands of Fortinet firewalls and VPNs used by major companies all over the world, according to two cybersecurity firms. The widespread hacking campaign, which is ongoing and has been dubbed FortiBleed, appears to not involve abusing any unknown vulnerability in the targeted devices, but rather on a more basic issue: companies may not be changing passwords to the firewall, nor making sure that the credentials they use for sensitive systems exposed on the internet are not already known by hackers.  In this campaign, hackers are first using automated tools to scan the internet for exposed Fortinet firewalls and VPNs. Then, they are breaking into the devices thanks to lists of previously known passwords. At that point, the cybercriminals can steal more sensitive data from the victim companies, cybersecurity firms Hudson Rock and SOCRadar wrote in their reports that they published this week. “Once a device is compromised, [the hackers] use it as a listening post, monitoring traffic passing through and collecting any additional credentials that flow by. Those freshly collected …

Wendy Gledhill — whose son Michael Gledhill is accused of murdering Handy — said that on the morning of the June 3 killing, 81-year-old Handy went to the front porch to grab the newspaper at his home in Tarzana, California, which he shared with Wendy and 44-year-old Michael. “James had gotten up to get the newspaper at about 9 o’clock, but he didn’t make the coffee like he usually does,” Wendy told the Daily Mail. “I just heard the door open because he was getting the paper.” Wendy, who was still in bed and did not notice anything out of the ordinary, said, “I can only assume my son was already out there and they started to …

Rolexes and diamonds: How Nelson Holdo, an O.C. jeweler, allegedly conned the wealthy

Rolexes and diamonds: How Nelson Holdo, an O.C. jeweler, allegedly conned the wealthy

In certain circles, Nelson Holdo was the go-to guy for fine jewelry and luxury watches. He ingratiated himself with the wealthy, touting his charitable donations and trips to Geneva, the world’s watchmaking capital. He hosted extravagant poker nights where players smoked cigars and cashed out chips toward pieces worn by roving models. Clients offered glowing referrals to friends. And so, they trusted him to brighten their special days. A father of three wired him $38,700 for three Rolexes — Christmas gifts for his kids after he beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A groom paid $27,000 for two Rolex Datejust watches for his father and his future father-in-law. A couple fell in love with a 3.6-carat diamond, splurging $60,000 for their engagement. But for some, when it came time to settle up, Holdo was full of excuses. The gems never materialized. As lawsuits piled up — dozens, over the decades — Holdo started new businesses in new places. More recently, even after prosecutors filed criminal charges accusing him of stealing from his customers, he made deals while free …

iPhone 18 Pro Battery Capacities Allegedly Leaked

iPhone 18 Pro Battery Capacities Allegedly Leaked

Battery capacities for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro have allegedly surfaced, and the numbers suggest only a modest increase over the iPhone 17 Pro. According to prolific Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is testing the iPhone 18 Pro with different battery capacities for the China and U.S. versions of the device, similar to last year’s iPhone 17 Pro models. The Chinese model is said to have a roughly 4,056 mAh battery, while the U.S. model is said to have a roughly 4,288 mAh battery. Apple removed the tray from U.S. iPhones starting with the iPhone 14 lineup, whereas iPhones sold in China have continued to include one (the iPhone Air is an exception – it is eSIM-only worldwide, including in China). Without the tray, Apple can pack a slightly larger battery into the available internal space, hence the difference in capacity. Model iPhone 17 Pro iPhone 18 Pro Leak Difference China / Physical SIM 3,988 mAh 4,056 mAh +68 mAh, +1.7% US / eSIM-only 4,252 mAh 4,288 mAh +36 mAh, +0.8% If the figures …

iPhone 19 Pro Prototype in Testing Allegedly Has Quad-Curved Display

iPhone 19 Pro Prototype in Testing Allegedly Has Quad-Curved Display

Apple is testing an iPhone 19 Pro with a display that curves around all four edges of the device, a leaker out of China has claimed. According to Weibo-based Digital Chat Station, the 2027-generation Pro device, currently at the evaluation stage, has a hole-punch cutout in the display for the front-facing camera, but Face ID is completely hidden under the panel. The claim is notable because multiple reports suggest Apple is aiming to launch a 20th-anniversary iPhone next year featuring a quad-curved display with no cutouts. Whether Apple plans to position the commemorative model as an ultra-premium tier above its Pro and Pro Max lineup has remained unclear, but the leaker’s latest comments suggest that could be the case. That said, if Apple is planning to use quad-curved panels across both the iPhone 19 Pro and iPhone 19 Pro Max, it would leave the company less room to differentiate them from the rumored commemorative iPhone. One way Apple could play it is to keep the uninterrupted display exclusive to the 20th-anniversary iPhone while leaving a …

Why did Saudi Arabia and the UAE allegedly carry out secret bombing raids on Iran?

Why did Saudi Arabia and the UAE allegedly carry out secret bombing raids on Iran?

At least two Gulf states “secretly” carried out bombing raids on Iran during the latest US-Israeli war against Tehran, officials speaking on condition of anonymity told the media earlier this week.  The United Arab Emirates struck several Iranian sites in early April, including an oil refinery on Lavan Island in the Persian Gulf, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. And Saudi Arabia also launched “numerous” air strikes against Iran towards the end of March, Reuters news agency reported Tuesday, citing two Iranian officials and two Western officials briefed on the matter. Ready and willing There has been no official confirmation of what would be a significant escalation in the conflict that has swept the Middle East, whether from Washington, Tehran, Riyadh or Abu Dhabi. If the attacks indeed took place, it would be the first time that the two Gulf states have carried out direct attacks on the Islamic Republic. “For the UAE strikes, there are photos that seem to confirm Emirati military involvement,” said Veronika Hinman, deputy …

Netflix Sued By Texas For Allegedly Spying On Children

Netflix Sued By Texas For Allegedly Spying On Children

Authored by Mary Prenon via The Epoch Times, Global video streaming service Netflix has been sued by the Texas attorney general’s office for allegedly collecting consumer data from children and adults without their knowledge or consent. In a May 11 statement, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused Netflix of spying on consumers by intentionally tracking and logging their viewing habits, preferences, devices, household networks, and other sensitive behavioral data. The litigation claims that although the mega-entertainment platform purported to refrain from collecting or sharing user data, it, in fact, recorded and monetized “billions of behavioral events.” According to Paxton, every consumer interaction became a “data point,” which revealed information about the user, and tracking was then applied to both adults’ and children’s accounts and profiles. “Netflix has built a surveillance program designed to illegally collect and profit from Texans’ personal data without their consent, and my office will do everything in our power to stop it,” Paxton said in the statement. “Netflix is not the ad-free and kid-friendly platform it claims to be. Instead, it …

Apple Project Files Allegedly Stolen in Foxconn Ransomware Attack

Apple Project Files Allegedly Stolen in Foxconn Ransomware Attack

Apple supplier Foxconn has confirmed a cyberattack on several of its U.S. factories, after a ransomware group claimed to have stolen confidential Apple project files as part of the hack. The Nitrogen group posted the breach on its data leak site this week, claiming to have made off with 8TB of data spanning more than 11 million files. Alongside the allegedly stolen Apple files, Nitrogen claims the trove includes internal project documentation and technical drawings tied to Intel, Google, Dell, and Nvidia. Foxconn confirmed the intrusion to The Register on Tuesday, but the supplier did not respond to questions regarding whether any customer data was actually taken. A company spokesperson said its cybersecurity team activated response measures to keep production running, and that all of its affected factories are resuming normal operations. Foxconn assembles a wide range of Apple products, but Apple famously takes the secrecy of unreleased products extremely seriously, and suppliers typically receive only the technical information needed for their specific role in manufacturing. Nitrogen is believed to be an offshoot of leaked …

OpenAI Sued Over ChatGPT Medical Advice That Allegedly Killed College Student

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech The family of a 19-year-old college student who died of an overdose after consulting ChatGPT for medical advice is suing OpenAI, alleging that chatbot-generated drug recommendations were responsible for the teen’s death. Filed this morning in California, the complaint details how University of California, Merced sophomore Sam Nelson — whose death was first reported in January by SF Gate— started using ChatGPT during his senior year of high school for help with homework and computer troubleshooting. As his trust with the AI deepened, however, he started turning to the product for something else: advice on how to safely partake in illegal drugs. Though it resisted at first, over time, the chatbot became a willing confidante, offering the teen personalized tips and tricks on how to consume illicit substances and maximize his high. It even “inserted emojis in its responses” and “asked whether it could create playlists for him to set his mood,” the lawsuit alleges, and eventually started “pushing …
