France’s ex-president Sarkozy escapes second ankle tag sentence

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy will not serve time with an electronic ankle tag as punishment for illegal funding of his 2012 re-election bid, an informed source said Wednesday. Sarkozy, 71, has faced a raft of accusations since leaving office after a single term from 2007 to 2012. He has denied all allegations in all cases. Last year, he became modern France’s first-ever president to go to jail, serving 20 days in a case related to alleged Libyan funding in his 2007 election campaign. His appeal trial in the case is ongoing. He has also received two definitive convictions in other cases. In one of them, the country’s top court last year upheld a six-month term in the so-called “Bygmalion” case, finding he had overspent on his failed 2012 re-election bid with a PR firm called Bygmalion and then attempted to cover it up. A physical therapist says that poor ankle mobility is a primary driver of falls and balance issues later in life—here’s how to improve it

Ankle mobility might feel like a small thing to worry about, but it can make a significant difference to your life. “Poor ankle mobility is a primary driver of falls and balance issues later in life,” says Dr Jamie Bovay, founder of and lead physical therapist at KinetikChain Denver. I asked him why ankles are a weak point for so many people. You may like “Ankles usually become immobile due to a combination of position and a lack of use throughout the full range of motion,” he says. “Most of us spend our lives in shoes with slightly elevated heels, which keep the Achilles and calf muscles in a shortened state.” Over time, this shortened state leads to a limited range of motion in the ankle joint, causing it to stiffen and restrict movement even further. “Once it is stiff, not only can we not use our previous range of motion but the nervous system also ‘forgets’ how to access control of deep dorsiflexion (ankle bending),” he says. Start your week with achievable workout ideas, …

Why I’m wearing a black plastic box on my ankle for Lent

Why I’m wearing a black plastic box on my ankle for Lent

(RNS) — At a recent check-in at our local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, a friend and fellow parishioner at our Catholic church came out wearing an ankle monitor. Several months before, in a June 2025 memo, Dawnisha Helland, ICE’s acting assistant director for management of non-detained migrants, had ordered ICE staff to place ankle monitors “whenever possible” on the more than 180,000 migrants enrolled in the alternative detention program, which allows them to stay in their communities while being processed. According to The Washington Post, fewer than 25,000 migrants were wearing ankle monitors at the time of Helland’s order. But neither my friend nor the few of us fellow parishioners who accompanied her to her ICE check-in had gotten the memo, so to speak. We were anxious about the possibility that she would be detained. She disappeared into the back office with an interviewer. A half-hour went by. As we counted the minutes, a woman entered the lobby with a perfect little baby in a car seat and sat down in front of …

Sean Payton Says Broncos QB Bo Nix Has an Ankle Condition That Made Break Inevitable

Sean Payton Says Broncos QB Bo Nix Has an Ankle Condition That Made Break Inevitable

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Sean Payton said at his season-ending news conference Tuesday that Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had a preexisting ankle condition that made a fracture inevitable. Nix broke a bone in his right ankle on Denver’s game-winning drive in the Broncos’ 33-30 overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs. Nix flew to Birmingham, Alabama, last week for an operation performed by Dr. Norman E. Waldrop III, a renowned foot and ankle specialist at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. Nix watched from a suite Sunday as backup Jarrett Stidham took his place in Denver’s 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game. On Tuesday, the Broncos’ brass provided the fullest accounting yet of Nix’s injury, with Payton saying a preexisting issue made the fracture “a matter of when.” “What was found was a condition that was predisposed — they always find a little more when they go in,” Payton said. “It wasn’t a matter of if, it was a matter of …
