Manchester City move top of Premier League – and send Burnley down

Manchester City move top of Premier League – and send Burnley down

Manchester City have not been top of the Premier League since the opening weekend of the season but they will usurp Arsenal at the summit tonight with a win at Burnley. Victory would put City top courtesy of a superior goal difference if they win by two goals or more, or on goals scored if they win by just the one. The more realistic Arsenal fans tuning into watch will be hoping Burnley, who will be relegated by a City win at Turf Moor this evening, can simply keep the score down. City’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal in Sunday’s entertaining duel between the country’s two best teams means the title race is now in their hands and could go to the wire. Technically speaking, it is in Arsenal’s hands too because the two teams will be level on points and close enough on goal difference, but that measure should favour a City team full of firepower. They have found form and tactical balance at just the right time: Marc Guehi has settled into the heart …

Chelsea fans turn on Rosenior as club lurches deeper into crisis

Chelsea fans turn on Rosenior as club lurches deeper into crisis

Good evening and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live coverage of Brighton & Hove Albion vs Chelsea from the Amex Stadium. The pressure continues to build on Chelsea and their manager Liam Rosenior ahead of their match tonight. Chelsea are coming off the back of a 1-0 defeat at home on Saturday, against a Manchester United side with a makeshift defence. That was their fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League, and their fourth consecutive league game without a goal. The loss dealt a blow to their already stuttering Champions League hopes, and they begin tonight’s game in sixth place, seven points behind Liverpool in fifth. Missing out on the tournament next season could lead to an unwanted exodus of some of their biggest stars, with Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez already linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge. If Chelsea were to suffer another defeat tonight, there would likely be doubts over whether Rosenior will still be the man in charge of the team for the weekend’s FA Cup semi-final tie against Leeds United. Brighton, …

live score and updates from World Snooker Championship

live score and updates from World Snooker Championship

Ronnie O’Sullivan has taken a giant step towards a mouth-watering second round match against fellow 50-year-old John Higgins with a highly impressive start to his quest for an eighth world snooker title. Despite initially heading for the wrong table on his return to the Crucible, O’Sullivan looked instantly back at home following a mixed season spent largely outside of England that has contained recent hints of a return to form. O’Sullivan raced to a 5-0 lead before sharing the final four frames of the opening session of his first round match against China’s He Guoqiang to lead 7-2 ahead of the conclusion on Wednesday afternoon. Although O’Sullivan did reach the semi-final last year, he looked bereft of confidence with what was a new cue before being comprehensively outplayed by the eventual winner Zhao Xintong. Despite another year and a few more grey hairs, it was instantly obvious that O’Sullivan arrives in Sheffield this year rather happier with both his form and chances of moving clear of Stephen Hendry to become the only eight-times world champion …

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

West Ham hold on for precious point at Crystal Palace as Wolves relegated

The Wales winger passed up a great opportunity by heading Tyrick Mitchell’s cross wide while unmarked from 10 yards out. Johnson, booked for hacking El Hadji Malick Diouf down soon after, curled a much better effort marginally wide as West Ham continued to live dangerously. Axel Disasi thumped a reply over on the turn but was offside anyway, and a much better chance came their way six minutes before the break. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who had been a prominent partier in Italy, mistimed a punch that fell to Castellanos, whose overhead-kick was prevented from going in by Lacroix. The England keeper soon made amends with a superb stop to keep out Konstantinos Mavropanos’s header.  Jarrod Bowen saw Hughes block a shot early in the second half that, judging by his reaction, the England man had expected to see flying into the top corner. Bowen attempted an overhead kick soon after but that was blocked. West Ham soon had to repel a barrage of corners after Johnson, causing problems on the right, sent in dangerous centres. …

Haaland and City bully Arsenal to take control of title race

Haaland and City bully Arsenal to take control of title race

A defiant Mikel Arteta insisted the real title race starts now despite defeat at the Etihad Stadium handing the advantage to Manchester City.  City will go top via a superior goal difference if they beat Burnley on Wednesday and now appear to have all the momentum. But Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was seen telling his team-mates at full-time that it is “not done”. Those views were later echoed by Arteta, who said of his players: “If they need to be more convinced, I think they are now. They were talking about it in the dressing room. It’s a new league now: they have a game in hand, we have a three-point advantage and five games to play. “Everything is still to play for. We know how much we want it and we are not going to stop. We are going to go again, that is for sure. We have full belief that we can do it – it is in our hands and it’s there for the taking.” Guardiola said the result gives hope to …

Unstoppable Noah Caluori inspires record Saracens win – but they cannot spell his name right

Scrum half Charlie Bracken was also exceptional while centre Olly Hartley and No 8 Tom Willis provided a continual stream of go-forward. Again, there was very little resistance from Sale and this will bear a long and painful review. Sale’s season may already be at an end and they have a horrific injury list but the absence of fight and heart was inexcusable, particularly at a point when the club were launching their season-ticket drive. At the very minimum, the CorpAcq should be a horrible place to visit for the opposing teams; the rugby equivalent of your cold Tuesday night at Stoke City. The inquest will begin in earnest on Monday morning as Sanderson gathers his squad to address what exactly their motivation is and where it has disappeared to. “I thought I was pretty clear at the start of the week around some of the things that were motivating the group,” Sanderson said. “Now I have asked them to come in tomorrow and tell me what’s motivating them individually. Some of those collective motivational …

Man Utd boost Champions League dreams and leave Chelsea in disarray

Man Utd boost Champions League dreams and leave Chelsea in disarray

It is sixth versus third at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea host Manchester United, with the race for the Champions League places hotting up. Manchester United won the reverse fixture 2-1 at Old Trafford back in September, with Chelsea spending most of the game down to 10 men after Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute red card. If Manchester United were to win tonight, they would complete a league double over Chelsea for just the second time after the 2019/20 campaign. Chelsea have lost just one of their last 12 home league meetings with Manchester United. Chelsea lost 3-0 at home against Manchester City last weekend. Chelsea have just one Premier league win in their last seven games and go into tonight’s game four points behind Liverpool, who occupy the final Champions League place in fifth. “That is the great thing about the quality we have in this team,” Liam Rosenior said. “We are capable of a run, but capability is one thing and producing it is another. Time is running out, so we need to be as close …

Crying shame as Tottenham hearts are broken by Brighton

Crying shame as Tottenham hearts are broken by Brighton

De Zerbi also warned his players that he will not stand for them feeling sorry for themselves, despite the nature of their 2-2 draw against Brighton in which they twice led through Pedro Porro and Xavi Simons. “They have to follow me and listen to me,” said De Zerbi. “I am proud of the performance. They have to be stronger and be focused just on the Wolves game and come to the training ground with a smile, otherwise they will go home immediately. I have no time to see negative people, sad players or sad assistants. We are lucky to work in a big club, we work in the Premier League and we have the right qualities to win the game. We have to be positive because I don’t like people who cry and think in a negative way.” Asked whether or not he was now more confident that Tottenham can secure their Premier League safety, De Zerbi said: “Yes, but I always thought and believed in the qualities of the players. They played a …

Alessia Russo and Hannah Hampton star for England in narrow win over Iceland – reaction

Alessia Russo and Hannah Hampton star for England in narrow win over Iceland – reaction

Hampton said she was just “doing her job” to try and preserve England’s slender lead. The goalkeeper told ITV Sport: “We know it’s tough. They put more bodies forward, more balls into dangerous areas, so it was nervy at the end but we got the job done.” When asked about her massive saves, she said: “It’s my job isn’t it really? Let’s be honest.  We’re in it as a team, I can’t be the one scoring goals but I can stop them, so we here we win ass a team and that’s what we pride ourselves on. “We’re a right pack, they call us, so Lessi [Alessia Russo] got a great finish at one end so I had to do my job at the other.” Hampton adds: “We would have liked to control the game a bit better than what we did, but we know that they have a lot of threat when they get momentum in their favour, a lot of balls in our box, and set pieces. We know there’s a real threat …
