Palace sign Strand Larsen on transfer deadline day but face Mateta dilemma

Palace sign Strand Larsen on transfer deadline day but face Mateta dilemma

Good morning and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s transfer deadline day coverage. Let’s be honest, the January window is usually very uneventful and this past month has been no different. But… if transfers gossip gets you going, then today could be an interesting one. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham could all rumoured to be interested in signing players before the 7pm deadline. Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Jérémy Jacquet for a fee in the region of £60m. Chelsea made the early running for the Rennes defender but he has since emerged as a top target at Anfield. Jacquet, 20, is expected to cost £55m plus £5m in add-ons, with his Rennes hoping to keep him at the club for the rest of the campaign as they chase European qualification.  Crystal Palace fans face an anxious final day of the winter transfer window as speculation mounts over Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future. Mateta was not involved in the 1-1 draw with 10-man Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday amid reports of a move to Italy. …

Rampant Arsenal rout Leeds to steady ship but Bukayo Saka injury a concern

Good afternoon and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live, minute-by-minute clockwatch for this afternoon’s Premier League fixtures, with six teams in action at 3pm, including league leaders Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s men will be looking to end their run of three league games without a win in their trip to Leeds United, following goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, and defeat against Manchester United last time out. However, the north London side, who completed a perfect league phase in Europe on Wednesday, have the chance to restore their lead to seven points ahead of Manchester City’s visit to Tottenham and Aston Villa’s home tie with Brentford, both on Sunday. But they face a Leeds side who have proved incredibly tough to beat since Daniel Farke’s inspired switch to a back three at the end of November. The Yorkshire side have lost just one of their last 10 leagues, while going unbeaten at Elland Road since losing to Aston Villa over two months ago. They start the weekend in 16th, within reach of Crystal Palace and Spurs, …

United blow title race open as Carrick puts himself in frame for full-time job

United blow title race open as Carrick puts himself in frame for full-time job

Give the job to Michael Carrick? Manchester United have been here before, of course, surfing a wave of good results and good vibes to appoint another former player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as their manager. It was a decision they came to regret with heart ruling head and having been swept up in popular opinion, with Gary Neville even dizzily joking there should be a statue for his former team-mate following the Champions League win away to Paris St-Germain in 2019 that helped push through the appointment. But, already, this feels like it has the potential to be more substantial. Possibly much more and while the sense is that Carrick has not been in the running, that may soon have to be revised. And why not? Beating Arsenal – and blowing the Premier League title race wide open again – and Manchester City in his first two games in charge, is a hugely impressive start. Carrick has had an immediate and powerful impact and that should not be underestimated at a club where it can feel …

Advantage Arsenal but Garnacho keeps alive Chelsea’s League Cup hopes

Advantage Arsenal but Garnacho keeps alive Chelsea’s League Cup hopes

Rosenior refused to blame Sánchez for the errors and said he was responsible for the goalkeeper’s uneasiness on the ball. “I think the first goal was disappointing,” Rosenior said. “[But] it’s a team goal. It’s not just on Rob. I’m asking Rob to do things that he hasn’t done before. I said to him before the game, and I made this really clear, when my players make mistakes, I am accountable. That’s on me. “He made a save in the second half that was absolutely world class. That could have put us out of the tie. He will improve in terms of his understanding. He’s had a very good season. There were very, very good moments with him. I’ll stay positive with him, as I will with all the group. My job is to help them, not to blame them. “That’s Rob’s first game with me. I’ve had two days to work with him. What you’ll know with me is I protect my players. I’m asking him to do things. If he makes a mistake, …

Arsenal fans taunt Gary Neville as hat-trick hero Gabriel Martinelli answers critics

Arsenal fans taunt Gary Neville as hat-trick hero Gabriel Martinelli answers critics

Portsmouth vs Arsenal in the FA Cup has a nostalgic feel to it, with Thierry Henry once receiving a standing ovation from Fratton Park after his performance in a 5-1 quarter-final victory in 2004. Mikel Arteta’s team also won 2-0 on the south coast in the fifth round in 2020 just before football was suspended before because of the Covid pandemic. Arsenal’s manager was one of the first prominent figures in English football to test positive for the virus, and he recalled this week feeling distinctly under the weather while on the touchline at Portsmouth. The London club went on to win the FA Cup after football’s resumption that summer, so a tie against the club placed 21st in the Championship could be a good omen. That triumph remains Arteta’s only major trophy at Arsenal, with attention fixed on delivering the league title after three consecutive runner-up finishes. Arsenal will also want to improve on their efforts in the FA Cup though, having been knocked out in the fourth round and the third round twice …

Anxiety and anger as chance of defining title moment eludes Arsenal

Anxiety and anger as chance of defining title moment eludes Arsenal

The current league leaders take on the defending champions in north London as Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates. The reverse fixture was won by a stunning free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai at Anfield back in August. Both fixtures last season ended in a 2-2 draw. It has been a great few days for Arsenal; they won 3-2 at Bournemouth on Saturday and since then Manchester City have dropped points in back-to-back games having drawn consecutive games. Manchester City’s draw against Brighton last night combined with a draw for Aston Villa mean that Arsenal have the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the table with a win tonight. Speaking ahead of the game, Mikel Arteta knows his side will have to be at their best to beat the defending champions. “We are top of the table, we play at home against a really good opponent and we want to maintain our position,” Arteta said. “In order to do that, we are going to have to be excellent throughout the game to deserve …
