Urgent recall issued for popular burger sold by Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose | UK | News

A popular beanburger stocked by major UK supermarkets has been recalled over fears it may be contaminated with plastic. The burger has 4.5 stars on Google and is widely available across leading UK supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, and Ocado. The product which is meant to be frozen contains red kidney beans, cannellini beans and haricot beans with carrots, sweetcorn and peppers all coated in a crispy breadcrumb. But the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an alert, warning consumers that the product is unsafe to eat. The FSA’s risk statement reads: “This product may contain pieces of plastic, which makes the product unsafe to eat.” The recall applies to Goodlife Spicy Bean Burger packs (454g), with batch codes L6030 and L6031, and a use-by date of July 28 2027. The batch code and use-by date can be found on the end of the product boх. Point-of-sale notices are being displayed in stores to inform customers about the issue and explain the steps to take. Customers can also contact Goodlife directly via its customer …

Asda wins court battle over fruit and veg sold in UK supermarkets | UK | News

Asda wins court battle over fruit and veg sold in UK supermarkets | UK | News

Supermarket giant Asda has won a landmark court case which could impact how fruit and veg is sold in UK shops. The supermarket and its logistics subsidiary IPL, won the court case concerning how plant breeders’ rights affect fruit and vegetables sold by UK retailers. At the High Court, it was decided that the retailer had not infringed plant breeders’ rights relating to the sale of Tang Gold mandarins in its stores, as claimed by Nador Cott Protection (NCP). The judge dismissed the infringement claim on the basis that the Tang Gold variety of mandarin “was not an essentially derived variety” of NCP’s Nadorcott mandarin. Both are protected by UK plant breeders’ rights. Graeme Morrison, Asda’s senior legal director said: “Being able to provide our customers with the products and ranges they love is the reason we defended this case strongly, and we are happy that as a result of this ruling we can continue to do just that. “This is a landmark case in the UK with repercussions across the wider sector and we …

Asda gives free item to customers on Sunday if they say three words | UK | News

Customers at one of the UK’s largest supermarkets can get free flowers for Mother’s Day this year. Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, March 15, and many Britons are busy picking up things like chocolates, candles and, of course, flowers for their mums. Those looking to gift their mother some lovely daffodils this weekend should head to their local Asda store, as it is giving them away for free. The retailer is rewarding hard-working mums this Mother’s Day, as a spokesperson explains that mums are often busy thinking about others before themselves. To get a free bunch of daffodils, customers just need to complete one simple task when they visit their local Asda store this week. It is giving out free flowers at 550 of its stores across the country on Saturday, March 14. Each of these stores will have 80 bunches of free daffodils available for customers to nab. One will be given out per customer, and the offer only lasts while stocks last. A spokeswoman for Asda said: “Mums do so much and often …

Shoplifter who killed Asda security guard at Arbroath superstore jailed for five years

A shoplifter who killed a security guard during a struggle at an Asda superstore as she tried to flee with stolen alcohol has been jailed for five years and four months. Former Royal Marine Alun Harris-Richards, 61, suffered a fatal heart attack while trying to prevent Natasha Smith, 38, from leaving the premises and fell to the ground, where he struck his head. At the High Court in Edinburgh in January, Smith pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and assaulting another Asda employee during the same altercation. She was sentenced on Thursday. Lady Haldane said on the day in question, Smith “set in train a series of events that ultimately had devastating consequences for Alun Harris-Richards, his family and all who knew and loved him”. The judge added: “Mr Harris-Richards lost his life that day when he was simply doing his job as a security guard in a supermarket.” Following Mr Harris-Richards’ death, a post-mortem examination found he had a coronary artery condition. Pathologists reported that people with the condition are “at risk of sudden death …

Asda ‘to announce more redundancies’ – ‘1,200 jobs at risk’ | UK | News

Asda is reportedly cutting more jobs. (Image: Getty) Asda has put up to 1,200 warehouse roles at risk of redundancy, a union has claimed. The job cuts come after a decision to outsource the delivery of its George fashion range to US parcel service giant DHL. The changes will affect staff working at clothing depots in Lymedale, North East clothing and Brackmills. Speaking to the Telegraph, Nadine Houghton, a GMB trade union national officer, said: “In the Lymedale depot alone, there are 14 couples with children whose entire household income relies on working there. “GMB is clear; the private equity  buyout of Asda has been a disaster for workers, customers, the supply chain and communities. “The recent job cuts announcement and now the outsourcing of clothing distribution pave the way for a full carve-up of the company.” In a fervent response to the GMB claims, Asda Chair Allan Leighton said “The suggestion that we are looking to break up the business is categorically untrue and, frankly, insulting to all our colleagues. There is only one …
