‘We owe apologies to America’: Foreign World Cup fan in absolute awe of US stadiums

In a video shared from the stands of the Dallas Stadium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Oliver Henry said that Brits “owe America an apology” for doubting the size of their sports venues. “We owe apologies to America because their football stadiums are so much better than ours,” he said in a video taken at the England and Croatia match last Friday. “This is the Dallas Stadium and it’s absolutely incredible. England just beat Croatia, but look at the size of the stadium.” The AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. It has a retractable …

AWE 2026 Live: Smart Glasses Are Bringing AI to Our Faces

AWE 2026 Live: Smart Glasses Are Bringing AI to Our Faces

I may have too many devices. Scott Stein/CNET AI is wildly disrupting the world at large, and tech more specifically, and one manifestation of that is the advent of new devices like smart glasses. I’ve been covering the emergence of wearables, virtual reality and augmented reality for over 15 years, but the current moment is more in flux than any I’ve witnessed. This week, I’ll be in Long Beach, California, for AWE 2026, the biggest AR/VR-focused conference of the year. I’ll be seeing and reporting on what’s new and how AI is taking up residence in what a lot of companies hope will be everyday eyewear for all of us. Meta already has tons of smart glasses, Google is releasing a wave of its own later this year, and Snap, a maker of smart glasses for years before Meta, has a pair of augmented reality Spectacles planned for 2026 as well. Apple’s new infusion of Siri AI into all its devices, announced last week at WWDC — where I got an in-depth look at how Siri …

Disclosure Day review: Moments of classic Spielberg awe elevate a clunky UFO thriller

Disclosure Day is in cinemas from Wednesday 10 June. Add it to your watchlist Anyone who knows the slightest thing about cinema knows that the subject of extra-terrestrial life is something that has preoccupied Steven Spielberg for just about the entirety of his storied career. With Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial five years later, the legendary filmmaker crafted arguably the two most seminal works about alien beings visiting Earth – a pair of stories rich with his trademark sense of wide-eyed wonder that redefined pop culture iconography forever (and which remain every bit as compelling and emotionally rewarding to this day.) He dipped his toes back into similar (albeit also rather different) waters in 2005 with his take on HG Wells’s classic sci-fi tale The War of the Worlds, and now – another two decades on – he’s gone back to the well one more time. Disclosure Day marks a welcome return to summer blockbuster fare for the master of that particular art, and finds him once again …

Your Daily Dose of Awe

Your Daily Dose of Awe

Consider a moment when you were suddenly pulled out of your daily routine by a profound sense of marvel and wonder. Maybe you were far outside the city on a clear night, looking up at a sky filled with so many stars it almost didn’t seem real. Maybe it was watching your child take their first steps toward you, hearing a piece of music that gave you chills, or seeing the ocean stretch endlessly beneath a spectacular sunrise. Most of us have experienced moments like these—brief but unforgettable experiences that leave us feeling connected, humbled, and more alive all at once. This is awe, a complex human emotion marked by a sense of vastness, transcendence, and what is often described as “mind-blowing” enlightenment. It is the feeling we experience when something is so extraordinary that it reshapes the way we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. I invite you to think of awe as medicine for your mind and body, dispensed from within you. Often, we do not realize awe’s effects until they …

Looking Your Way Out of Anxiety: The Neuroscience of Awe

Looking Your Way Out of Anxiety: The Neuroscience of Awe

When we feel anxious or overwhelmed, our first instinct is usually to try to think our way out of it. We analyze our problems, we ruminate endlessly, and we try to logic our way back to peace. But modern neuroscience has discovered a profound truth: You cannot think your way out of an anxious ego. You have to look your way out of it. I have experienced this firsthand. I recall one of the toughest times in my life when the person I thought I was going to spend my life with decided to leave. Everything had seemed to be going so well, and I was looking forward to the future. Suddenly, the future I had planned was gone, and it felt truly hopeless. I could not sleep, and I could not figure my way out of the pain. But in those early morning hours, something shifted. A profound realization came over me—a deep sense of connection to the Universe—and it showed me that I was going to be okay. I did not know how, …

Princess Kate leaves fans in awe with often overlooked skill at Anzac Day service

The Princess of Wales attended a ceremony at the Cenotaph in central London on Saturday to mark Anzac Day, where Australians and New Zealanders who have lost their lives in conflict are commemorated. Princess Kate put on a poignant display, placing a wreath down as a mark of respect. After the event, a video was shared to Prince William and Princess Kate’s Instagram page, showing a montage of clips from the engagement. The post racked up over 90,000 likes and 900 comments. Many praised Kate for her lone appearance, and lots heaped compliments on her immaculate and elegant outfit, but a select few couldn’t help but notice her effortless skill – how she walks in towering heels. © AFP via Getty ImagesPrincess Kate lays a wreath during a service to commemorate ANZAC day at the Cenotaph war memorial in central London Over the years, we’ve seen the royal step out in everything from sporty trainers to pin-sharp stilettos, and it was the latter she opted for for Saturday’s engagement. Her navy heels perfectly matched her …

Alfie Boe: ‘It’s a battle every day learning how to forgive myself’

Get the inside track from Roisin O’Connor with our free weekly music newsletter Now Hear This Get our free music newsletter Now Hear This Get our free music newsletter Now Hear This When you think of the opera singer Alfie Boe, your mind might go to his tremendous performances in Les Mis, his long-running collaboration with fellow West End star Michael Ball, or even his seemingly relentless appearances on This Morning. You might not expect a solo album full of personal songs about family and finding peace. It was a bold move, then, after years of covering revered works in opera, classical and musical theatre, to release his first ever album of (mostly) original material. For Boe, it was simply a case of now or never. We meet in a plush private members’ club in Chelsea, Boe looking unassuming as he walks over with a brown cap pulled over his brow. He orders a pot of Earl Grey and takes the cap off, revealing a close crop of dark hair. He seems a little anxious, …

How games capture the awe and terror of cosmic isolation | Games

Last week’s launch of the Artemis II space mission was a stunning spectacle, the 17-storey-high rockets erupting into cacophonous life before wrenching the craft through the Earth’s atmosphere. But the images that have come since hold just as much impact: the tiny Orion craft and its four-person crew drifting silently through space, further and further from home. In his autobiography, the Apollo astronaut Michael Collins described this feeling perfectly. Left in the command module as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down on the lunar surface, he wrote: “I am alone now, truly alone, and absolutely isolated from any known life. I am it. If a count were taken, the score would be three billion plus two over on the other side of the moon, and one plus God knows what on this side.” Although most science-fiction video games are set in distant galaxies or far-off futures where space travel has become routine, a few have attempted to explore this sense of solitude and vulnerability. As a Nasa-obsessed child in the 1980s, I loved the …
