The Universe Doesn’t Do Charity: Bad News for Cosmic Bargain Hunters

An intuitive explanation of conservation of information showing how it destroys the credibility of Darwinian naturalism This republished article first appeared in Bill Dembski’s subsack. Despite its flamboyant title, this paper is about a well-defined and sober concept—conservation of information. The term conservation of information sounds technical and suggests it can be difficult to understand. It’s not. I want in this brief article to cut to the heart of this concept. I’ll show that it is self-evidently true. Additionally, I’ll show how it obliterates the materialistic, nihilistic conception of the world championed by aggressive atheists who use science as a club to beat religion. If I could go back in time and rename conservation of information with a single word, I’d go with “offload” (verb form) or “offloading” (noun form). When you offload something, you don’t eliminate the load. Rather, you shift it to someone or something else. Moreover, in doing so, you do nothing to reduce the load. In particular, the universe doesn’t step in and through some law of nature make the load …

The same scent I used to wear as a university student in 2014 has now almost doubled in cost, with 100ml of the sea salt-scented fragrance now sitting at over £120. Simply put, it’s out of my price range. My phone, like most things about me, knows this. As such, my targeted social media ads aggressively point me towards bargain fragrance sites that claim to offer a dupe of the same coastal aroma for around a fifth of the price. Except, (big shock here) they’re so weak that the smell is only detectable for roughly five milliseconds, which is how I took to browsing for real bottles of the stuff on second-hand sites …

“The bargain no longer works”: Canada’s Prime Minister calls out America’s economic hegemony

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called out the United States in a World Economic Forum speech Tuesday, saying that economic rules are enforced “asymmetrically” and “the strongest will exempt themselves when convenient.” Though the prime minister did not name President Donald Trump directly, he did call out “American hegemony in particular.” Carney said in the speech that for a time it was useful, allowing for a variety of mutually beneficial economic and security policies, but now “the bargain no longer works.” Carney’s speech referenced a landmark 1978 essay by Czech dissident and later president, Václav Havel, called “The Power of the Powerless.” The essay uses the example of a grocer keeping a “Workers of the World Unite” poster in his window, not because he stood with the idea but because he feared retaliation for not displaying the sign. Havel calls for people to remove the signs and endorse a different world order than the one imposed upon them. Carney said that Canada once proudly placed a sign in the window endorsing the economic world order …
