Strengthen every part of your core with just six exercises and a workout bench

Don’t you sometimes wish things could be easier? While I can’t make life easier, I can introduce midlife weight-loss coach Rachael Sacerdoti, who has a way to make moving through life easier. “A stronger core makes everything else easier. Your posture improves, your lower back feels more supported, and your other exercises, whether that’s squats, deadlifts or simply carrying groceries, feel more stable and controlled,” she says. “Core strength also plays a significant role in injury prevention as we get older,” she adds. “It’s about building a body that functions well and feels good to live in. Latest Videos From You may like “Sometimes a bench and a few controlled movements are more than enough to wake everything up,” says Sacerdoti, who recently shared a six-move bench sequence targets the full abdominal area, including the deep core muscles that support and stabilize your spine. “The bench changes the angle and the range of motion, which means your core has to work harder and more intentionally,” explains Sacerdoti. “I chose these movements because they are accessible, …

Woman gives birth inside NYC courtroom while handcuffed to bench after 24 hours in custody, legal aid groups say

A woman was left “traumatized and humiliated” after being forced to give birth while handcuffed to a bench inside a New York courtroom after being held in custody for over 24 hours, a legal aid group has said. Samantha Randazzo, 33, went into labor and was forced to deliver her child on a courtroom bench in Brooklyn on Friday “without adequate medical care, privacy, or dignity,” according to a statement from a group of public defenders and legal advocates. Randazzo was surrounded by law enforcement, prosecutors and courtroom staff, some of whom reportedly laughed and joked at the situation, the group claimed. “She deserved care, compassion, safety, and dignity. Instead, she was subjected to trauma and humiliation in full public view,” the statement read. Her lawyer, Wynton Sharpe, disputed the group’s claims and said court officers reacted quickly and the presiding judge cleared the room immediately. “She didn’t have to say anything. We were like, oh OK, this is happening, like, now,” Sharpe told The New York Times. “It was a joyful and sad situation, …

Kepu Tuipulotu inspires comeback as Bath’s heavyweight bench sees off Sale

Ewan Richards picked off a Sale attacking line-out and, from his own 22, Tuipulotu pummelled his way down the short side, running through two tackles, before spotting space in the Sale back field and setting up replacement scrum-half Van der Linde perfectly with his piece of footballing magic. Then came Barbeary’s killer thrust, after 28 punishing phases, to put them within sight of the finishing line. While Sale engineered a great position to steal the win late on, George Ford – playing his first game since February 21 after being dropped by England following the Six Nations defeat to Ireland – lost control of the ball and the chance slipped away. It was Sharks’ ninth defeat of a disappointing league campaign. “I’m crestfallen,” said Sale’s director of rugby Alex Sanderson, who was forced to play a hooker, Nathan Jibulu, at No 7 because of his back-row injury issues. “I’m just gutted for the amount of effort that the lads put in. It is frustrating but it’s seemingly a similar story to how the rest of …

I’m a personal trainer who works with seniors—this 15-minute park bench workout is great for beginners over 65

Now that spring has sprung, why not make a beeline for your nearest park bench—not only to top up your vitamin D reserves but to try this full-body workout too. It’s a routine I used to program with my beginner-level senior clients because it’s simple and accessible. It also demonstrates that you don’t need a gym or expensive equipment to move well and strengthen your body. And the routine can be easily adapted to make it easier or harder. Article continues below You may like Plus, the bench can always revert to its original purpose of a seat where you can take a breather if the intensity of the workout ever gets too much. How to do the 15-minute park workout As well as a park bench (ideally one that isn’t occupied), you’ll need a lightweight, long-loop resistance band for the pulling exercises. Perform eight repetitions of each exercise (on each side for the step-ups and mountain climbers) and keep rest to a minimum between each movement to complete one circuit. Avoid rushing—perform each repetition …

An orthopedic surgeon explains the hand injury that has many MLB players on the bench : NPR

Baseball hitters are on a quest for power. But that quest comes at a cost. NPR’s Ayesha Rascoe speaks to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas DiLiberti about baseball players suffering hamate injuries. AYESHA RASCOE, HOST: Major League Baseball’s opening day is this week. But this season, a number of players will be on the bench for the first game, out with an injury to a bone in their hand. It’s called a broken hamate, and the number of these injuries is spiking. A lot of this year’s bench players were injured during spring training. Joining us now to talk about the hamate and why it’s breaking in baseball is Dr. Thomas DiLiberti. He’s an orthopedic surgeon based in Dallas, Texas, and has treated dozens of players who’ve broken this bone. Thank you for being with us. THOMAS DILIBERTI: Yeah. Glad to be here. RASCOE: All right. I’m looking at my hand right now. Which bone is the hamate? DILIBERTI: It’s one of the bones that’s in the palm. So if you feel the side of your …

How to Massively Improve Your Bench Press

How to Massively Improve Your Bench Press

The bench press, star of chest day, has long stood as the de facto measure for a lifter’s strength. There are, of course, more holistic ways to measure physical strength—and if your goal is simply to build muscle, you might not need chest presses at all. But if years of Hollywood montages have taught us anything, it’s that benching heavy counts for something. To paraphrase Kenny Powers, not everybody’s trying to be the best at exercising. You need not worry if you don’t know, or care, how much weight you can put up on the bench. That said, if you know and very much care, we’ve got some intel that should have you stacking thicker plates on the bar in no time. To find out what it takes to maximize the bench press, we spoke with top trainers, coaches, and practitioners who have studied the movement and understand the latest research. If you’ve recently hit a strength plateau, or even if you’re just interested in improving your form and efficiency on the lift, here are …

Grieving Maro Itoje backed to give England a lift from the bench against Wales

Grieving Maro Itoje backed to give England a lift from the bench against Wales

Given what Maro Itoje has been through since the death of his mother in December, it is the right decision by Steve Borthwick not to include him in the starting XV against Wales. Itoje, 31, had missed the start of England’s training camp in Girona in Spain to attend the funeral of mother Florence in Nigeria last Monday – last Wednesday’s training session was particularly intense – and one can only imagine what an emotional day it will be for the Saracens lock at Twickenham on Saturday. You have to go back to 2019 for the last time Itoje did not start a Six Nations match for England and even then, it was only because of a knee injury he sustained in the opening-round win against Ireland in Dublin that would rule him out of the remainder of the championship. Since 2020, when England last won the Six Nations, the Saracens lock has remarkably not only started every game but also played every minute of every game. You expect the minutes he is on the …

My tool bench was an unorganized disaster — here’s how I fixed it

My tool bench was an unorganized disaster — here’s how I fixed it

As someone who is not the most handy person, I have tried to learn as much as possible about household chores and tasks. Being a first-time homeowner has brought on plenty of challenges, and there are still plenty of jobs I don’t feel comfortable enough with my skills to even attempt on my own. But some of the more basic tasks or maintenance checks that come with owning a home have become part of my yearly routines. This includes cleaning and changing air filters, switching the direction of the fans in winter and summer, and assembling all kinds of furniture we inevitably acquire as our family grows. Over my time as a homeowner, my tool inventory has grown, especially when purchasing tools for specific jobs. But my basement and tool area, if you can call it that, became a cluttered mess. I had no organization whatsoever, and it became hard to find anything. I took a few initial steps to organize my tools, knowing I need to do a bigger and better job eventually. But …
