This evolutionary biologist fuses art into her science

academic: Relating to school, classes or things taught by teachers in formal institutes of learning (such as a college). biology: The study of living things. The scientists who study them are known as biologists. coral: Marine animals that often produce a hard and stony exoskeleton and tend to live on reefs (the exoskeletons of dead ancestor corals). curriculum: (plural: curricula) The official classroom materials (often readings) used to lead students through a course of study on a particular topic. DNA: (short for deoxyribonucleic acid) A long, double-stranded and spiral-shaped molecule inside most living cells that carries genetic instructions. It is built on a backbone of phosphorus, oxygen, and carbon atoms. In all living things, from plants and animals to microbes, these instructions tell cells which molecules to make. environment: The sum of all of the things that exist around some organism or the process and the condition those things create. Environment may refer to the weather and ecosystem in which some animal lives, or, perhaps, the temperature and humidity (or even the placement of things …

A molecular biologist explains the ultimate body hack for daily anxiety

A molecular biologist explains the ultimate body hack for daily anxiety

We ought to listen to our bodies more. Yet, we rarely make time for this, even though it is completely fundamental to our well-being. But being in tune with our bodies, not just our brains, is exactly what Dr Estanislao Bachrach, who holds a PhD in molecular biology specialising in neuroscience, encourages us to do.  The scientist and author invites us to reconnect with ourselves and truly get to know our body, because it’s what actually provides the brain with vital information for everything it decides to do, feel and think.  The aim? To use the body as a tool for self-knowledge to achieve a major goal: strengthening our sensory intelligence to help us with anxiety, decision-making and even empathising with people we don’t like.  We caught up with the expert to find out more in an in-depth Q&A. You highlight a fascinating idea: ‘Let your body be your brain’. Why should we make this our goal? Well, it’s not so much a goal we must set ourselves. My job is simply to share a …

How a Biologist Became a Casualty in the War on Reality

How a Biologist Became a Casualty in the War on Reality

Carole Hooven, author of The Story of Testosterone (2021), was living the dream as a mainstream evolutionary biologist. Not only did she lecture at Harvard but, before starting her doctorate in 1999, she spent eight months in Uganda, researching “sex differences in the behavior of wild chimpanzees.” The core belief of her branch of higher ed is that everything human can be reduced to animal impulses. And she certainly wasn’t the one to challenge it. Yet the Cancel Culture mob came for her anyway. Hooven sums what happened in her article on the affair at Tablet last month: I did not censor my views about evolutionary biology in teaching, writing (particularly my book T: The Story of Testosterone) or public speaking. However, stating that there are two sexes on Fox & Friends in 2021 evidently crossed a line. Shortly after that, I was made so uncomfortable on campus and in my department that I felt I had no choice but to leave the job I loved. “There Are Only Two Gametes,” September 24, 2025 She …
