Anarchists blew themselves up when building bomb in Rome

Alessandro Mercogliano and Sara Ardizzone were found beneath the rubble of a cottage beside an ancient Roman aqueduct The bodies of an anarchist couple were found beneath the rubble of a cottage on the outskirts of Rome after they blew themselves up while making a bomb. Police believed Alessandro Mercogliano, 53, and 36-year-old Sara Ardizzone were plotting an attack against a police station and Leonardo, a defence contractor, which made parts for F-35 jets. Traces of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used to make explosives, were found in the debris of the abandoned building beside an ancient Roman aqueduct on Friday. Police said the pair were supporters of Alfredo Cospito, the jailed figurehead of a loosely organised anarchist network called the Informal Anarchist Federation. Cospito, 58, is serving a 20-year sentence for a series of parcel bombs and attacks targeting authorities. In 2012, he was sentenced to 10 years for kneecapping the head of the Italian nuclear power company Ansaldo Nucleare. ‘Risk of mass-casualty attacks’ Otello Lupacchini, a retired judge and mafia expert, said that the …

Russia Says Ukrainian Drone Boat Blew Up Shadow LNG Tanker In Mediterranean

Update (0644ET): At least ten tankers have reportedly been hit by IRGC forces in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News. At the same time, the battlefield appears to be widening beyond the Gulf region. A Russian-flagged LNG tanker, Arctic Metagaz, carrying fuel from Russia’s blacklisted Arctic LNG 2 project, was reportedly hit by Ukrainian drone boats in the Mediterranean. According to Bloomberg, “The tanker was likely en route to China, which has been the sole buyer of gas from sanctioned Russian export projects, according to ship-tracking data. The vessel was carrying cargo that originated from the Arctic LNG 2 project, which the U.S. sanctioned in 2023.” Russia’s Transport Ministry stated in a post on Telegram that the attack on the LNG tanker was “carried out from the Libyan coast by Ukrainian unmanned boats.” Aerial footage circulating on X shows the severely damaged Arctic Metagaz. Tankers ablaze from the Strait of Hormuz to the Mediterranean Sea only suggest that the conflict is widening. *   *   * Times of Malta reports that the …

Are wind power generators actually viable at home? I tried one, and the results blew me away

Are wind power generators actually viable at home? I tried one, and the results blew me away

ZDNET’s key takeaways The Shine Turbine kit is on sale for $400. The kit includes everything you need to turn wind into electrical energy, and the turbine features a 12,000 mAh battery. There are limitations, which include the weight of the kit and the 40W of power it taps out at. Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. I cover a lot of solar generators here, and they are all the rage. I’ve tested dozens of devices over the past few years and seen the technology go from strength to strength. But I often get asked, “What happens when the clouds roll in, and the sun vanishes?” Living in the UK, the sun can be in short supply for much of the year. Also: I stopped leaving these 7 gadgets plugged in, and my electric bill thanked me This is when you turn your attention from solar to wind power. And there’s one company that makes portable wind turbines perfect for charging your smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices: Shine Turbine.  I’ve been testing the …

I tested the Philips OLED+950 TV for a month and the picture quality blew me away

I tested the Philips OLED+950 TV for a month and the picture quality blew me away

Picture quality is what Philips is aiming for, and this is one of the best-looking OLED TVs that you can buy. It has an advantage over Samsung, Sony and LG in that it supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ formats for great HDR results, regardless of the source. Philips has put extra effort into making scenes come to life with bright highlights and vibrant colours. There’s support for Filmmaker Mode, which is comfortably watchable on this TV. This can be too dark on some models and I’ve needed the “Movie” Motion Style to remove judder, but the Philips OLED+950 presents this content as the director intended. The picture processing can push things to be brighter, sharper and, in some cases, ultra-real, through the HDR Crystal Clear mode, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Crystal Clear offers a cooler picture with brighter highlights and more contrast. I watched Guardians of the Galaxy in this mode and the action jumped off the screen. Watching sci-fi series The Expanse, highlights were distractingly bright, with details like a white …

BOOM! That time Oregon blew up a whale with dynamite.

BOOM! That time Oregon blew up a whale with dynamite.

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. When a whale dies in the ocean, an ecosystem grows around its sunken carcass. It’s an epic burial at sea, something researchers call a whale fall. The body is a literal smorgasbord on which deep sea creatures and bacteria feast for years at a time before what’s left transforms into a reef festooned with anemones and sponges. A whale that dies stranded on land is something different, a stinking mass of rotting flesh and draining fluids. While scavenging birds might struggle to bust through the corpse’s leathery skin, insects go to town. Little by little, they break the body down as its nutrients ooze into the sand and nearby vegetation.  It takes about two years for everything but the whale’s skeleton to disappear. But with the unholy stench of a dead, 45-foot-long sperm whale turning stomachs across town after beaching on November 9, 1970, officials in Florence, Oregon couldn’t wait that long. They needed the eight ton carcass gone as soon as …

‘Industry’ Blew Up the Bank—Then Got Right Back to Work

‘Industry’ Blew Up the Bank—Then Got Right Back to Work

Last we left Industry, the acclaimed HBO series about the London office of an illustrious American bank, the illustrious bank in question had been sold off to a Gulf-state sovereign wealth fund and its principal characters had been scattered to the wind. If the season finale felt like the end of something, that was by design—the culmination of perhaps the first version of the show. “We were trying to basically scorch the earth because we didn’t think we were coming back,” says Industry cocreator Konrad Kay. When Industry premiered in 2020, it was a worm’s-eye view of the young strivers in London banking, populated by a cast of unknowns. The hook of season one was not just faithfully rendering the stakes of being a bottom-feeder in an industry of note—botching a salad order, showing up to work hungover, striking out with a coworker—but articulating the feeling of being on the precipice…. Of having made it through one door, and then maybe another, and arriving in the arena of real-world action for the first time. Sex, …

Best Movies Of 2025: 17 Films That Blew Us Away This Year

Best Movies Of 2025: 17 Films That Blew Us Away This Year

The year in moviegoing can, perhaps, be summed up by one fact: Sinners remains the only film in the Top 10 list of highest-grossing movies in the United States that isn’t based on existing IP and isn’t a part of a popular franchise. On its own, this would be enough reason for the Ryan Coogler-directed film to make this list, which is full of other wholly original movies. The Southern Gothic horror set in the Jim Crow South was one of the most talked-about films this year, down to the very last minute, as it racked up coveted nominations for the 2026 awards season and was left off a few big best-of lists. That doesn’t mean there weren’t some worthy adaptations that held our attention, like One Battle After Another, Hamnet and Wicked: For Good. But there’s something special about several of the lesser-known films on this list that deserve your attention, too. In this year-end roundup, HuffPost US’ staffers talk about their favourite films of the year, including popular animated movies, gripping documentaries and …

55 Facts That Blew Our Minds in 2025

55 Facts That Blew Our Minds in 2025

The Atlantic’s Science, Technology, and Health desk has had a busy 2025: Our writers have spent the year probing the limits of human consciousness and gene-editing technology, studying the ubiquity of microplastics, investigating the origins of a mysterious ALS outbreak, and even chasing down rubble from the White House’s demolished East Wing. Our reporting has led us to a number of strange and delightful facts. In a year defined by slop, we hope these nuggets of reality inspire some genuine awe: On average, women’s hands are more sensitive to warmth than men’s, some research suggests. The U.S. releases 100 million sterile flies in Mexico every week. A sea-slug species called Elysia chlorotica appears to perform photosynthesis. The slug eats algae, turns bright green, and spends the rest of its life converting light, water, and air into sugar, like a leaf. The jingle for Pepsi-Cola was the most recognized tune in America in 1942, according to one survey. Satellites can spot the hot breath geysering out of a single whale’s blowhole. Some AI doomers aren’t saving …
