Rare, stinky double corpse flower bloom draws people to the Huntington

Rare, stinky double corpse flower bloom draws people to the Huntington

The Huntington’s long-awaited stink has arrived. Two corpse flowers nicknamed Odora and Odorysseus have bloomed at the San Marino conservatory, drawing thousands for the rare occasion and quickly surpassing last year’s numbers. Corpse flowers have been a staple of the Huntington since 1999, when the garden exhibited its first corpse flower. Native to Sumatra, Indonesia, these plants are endangered in the wild and only bloom for 24 to 48 hours every few years. Once bloomed, they reek of rotting flesh. As the day goes on, these smelly specimens will close back up and collapse, losing their infamously rotten odor. The double bloom this summer was “definitely a surprise,” said Brandon Tam, the Huntington’s associate curator of orchids. The last time multiple corpse flowers bloomed on the same day at the Huntington was in 2018. Bloom Energy Defends Supply Chain, Calls Hunterbrook Report “False And Misleading”

Bloom Energy Defends Supply Chain, Calls Hunterbrook Report “False And Misleading”

Bloom Energy is responding forcefully against allegations made by short seller Hunterbrook Capital, rejecting the firm’s claims about its accounting, supply chain and growth prospects a day after a report sent shares sharply lower. The clean energy company said Thursday that Hunterbrook’s assertions regarding its financial reporting and access to critical raw materials are “false and misleading,” according to a statement reported by Bloomberg. The response comes after Hunterbrook published an investigation on July 8 that questioned Bloom’s independence from Chinese suppliers and argued that the company’s long-term manufacturing ambitions may be constrained by global scandium availability. Hunterbrook disclosed that it stands to benefit if Bloom’s shares decline through a short position. Bloom specifically defended its financial reporting, saying allegations concerning its accounting are contradicted by its audited financial statements. The company also disputed Hunterbrook’s central thesis surrounding scandium oxide, the specialty material used in Bloom’s solid oxide fuel cells. Bloom said it has sufficient scandium oxide supply to meet both current production needs and its existing customer backlog. It added that its scandium supply is …

Olof Dreijer: Loud Bloom review – the Knife star’s debut solo album is a garden of earthly delights | Dance music

Olof Dreijer: Loud Bloom review – the Knife star’s debut solo album is a garden of earthly delights | Dance music

Swedish producer Olof Dreijer is best known for projects with his sibling Karin: namely their duo the Knife, plus Karin’s solo act Fever Ray, with whom he created four brilliant tracks on 2023 album Radical Romantics. For all that his beats on these records often had African-Caribbean-Latin syncopation, they also had a Scandinavian winter gloom. The artwork for Loud Bloom Conversely, his debut solo album seems to crane upwards towards sunlight like flowers – and each of the tracks has a floral name. Dance heads will already be familiar with some of them (having appeared on EPs stretching back to 2023) but together they show quite how distinctive Dreijer’s own musical accent is: you can tell it’s him sometimes from just half a second of music. His melodies squiggle through the air like a beach ball punted into a strong breeze; distorted notes rear up in surprise or cock their heads quizzically. The rhythms recall cumbia, kuduro, dancehall, techno and more but are complicated with fiendish funk and anti-quantised detailing, and charismatic guest vocalists from …

Scotland in bloom: wildflowers turn the Outer Hebrides into a Technicolor dream | Scotland holidays

Scotland in bloom: wildflowers turn the Outer Hebrides into a Technicolor dream | Scotland holidays

Some 8,000 years ago, behind the retreating glaciers, a remarkable environment was born on the western fringes of Scotland’s Outer Hebridean islands, forged by the wind and waves. It began with rising sea levels and sweeping Atlantic gales depositing crushed shell-sand inland; this settled over glacial sediment to form a coastal belt of lime-rich soil. Buffered from the sea by mounting sand dunes, this winter-wet and summer-sunned substrate produced one of Europe’s rarest habitats: the “machair”, Gaelic for “fertile grassy plain”. Abounding in diverse, colourful wildflowers and an array of associated wildlife, coastal machair is a precious, globally important outpost of biodiversity, supporting everything from purple orchids and nodding blue campanulas to endangered birdlife, otters and rare bumblebees. As a wildflower fanatic, visiting the Outer Hebrides in peak machair bloom has long been an aspiration. Over the years, I’d read accounts of its arresting, vibrant seasonality – its shifting blankets of red and white clover, yellow trefoil and creamy eyebright, bold against the sky. Although remnant machair is also found in north-west Ireland, its greatest …

How to find L.A. hikes where spring is in full bloom

How to find L.A. hikes where spring is in full bloom

I’ve come to resent the frenzy around superblooms. Not because I don’t love seeing our hillsides blanketed with nature’s bounty, but because it misses the point that every wildflower that bursts out of the ground is its own sort of miracle. Have you ever slowed down on the trail just to stare at an individual California poppy and considered how in the world a seed that’s a fraction of an inch (1/20 to be exact-ish) became this bright orange delicate thing before you? For me, each wildflower I spot on the trail is an opportunity to practice gratitude. I hope I can persuade you to consider the same. With that same energy, I’d like to teach you how I find wildflowers and other plants I love, both as a hiker and outdoors journalist. Here is what I consider as I’m searching for the best spring hikes. A large oak tree provides shade over a trail in Franklin Canyon Park. (Jaclyn Cosgrove / Los Angeles Times) 1. Spring flowers bloom in England after mix of hot and cold weather creates ideal conditions | UK weather

Colourful tulips, hyacinths, wisteria and daffodils have made a remarkable display across England after a short period of hot weather followed by a cold snap created excellent conditions for spring blooms. There were record temperatures last week in many parts of the UK as the country recorded one of the hottest April days in the last 80 years. A high of 26.5C (79.7F) was recorded in Kew Gardens, south-west London, on Wednesday, the Met Office said. It was the hottest day recorded in the first half of April since 1946, according to the forecaster. London was hotter than many popular holiday destinations including Ibiza, Rome and Marrakech. Then, there was a sudden drop in temperatures by as much as 10C. This created the ideal conditions for spectacular spring blooms, gardeners have said. Tim Upson, the director of gardens and horticulture at the Royal Horticultural Society, said: “Throughout spring it is typical to experience episodes of warmer and cooler weather accelerating and decelerating plants’ development across the UK. Spring has arrived notably early in the south …
