Scotland in bloom: wildflowers turn the Outer Hebrides into a Technicolor dream | Scotland holidays

Some 8,000 years ago, behind the retreating glaciers, a remarkable environment was born on the western fringes of Scotland’s Outer Hebridean islands, forged by the wind and waves. It began with rising sea levels and sweeping Atlantic gales depositing crushed shell-sand inland; this settled over glacial sediment to form a coastal belt of lime-rich soil. Buffered from the sea by mounting sand dunes, this winter-wet and summer-sunned substrate produced one of Europe’s rarest habitats: the “machair”, Gaelic for “fertile grassy plain”. Abounding in diverse, colourful wildflowers and an array of associated wildlife, coastal machair is a precious, globally important outpost of biodiversity, supporting everything from purple orchids and nodding blue campanulas to endangered birdlife, otters and rare bumblebees. As a wildflower fanatic, visiting the Outer Hebrides in peak machair bloom has long been an aspiration. Over the years, I’d read accounts of its arresting, vibrant seasonality – its shifting blankets of red and white clover, yellow trefoil and creamy eyebright, bold against the sky. Although remnant machair is also found in north-west Ireland, its greatest …

Spring flowers bloom in England after mix of hot and cold weather creates ideal conditions | UK weather

Colourful tulips, hyacinths, wisteria and daffodils have made a remarkable display across England after a short period of hot weather followed by a cold snap created excellent conditions for spring blooms. There were record temperatures last week in many parts of the UK as the country recorded one of the hottest April days in the last 80 years. A high of 26.5C (79.7F) was recorded in Kew Gardens, south-west London, on Wednesday, the Met Office said. It was the hottest day recorded in the first half of April since 1946, according to the forecaster. London was hotter than many popular holiday destinations including Ibiza, Rome and Marrakech. Then, there was a sudden drop in temperatures by as much as 10C. This created the ideal conditions for spectacular spring blooms, gardeners have said. Tim Upson, the director of gardens and horticulture at the Royal Horticultural Society, said: “Throughout spring it is typical to experience episodes of warmer and cooler weather accelerating and decelerating plants’ development across the UK. Spring has arrived notably early in the south …

Brick vs. Bloom Card: I tested both for my screen addiction, and the winner depends on you

Brick vs. Bloom Card: I tested both for my screen addiction, and the winner depends on you

pros and cons Pros Better app than Brick. Easy app scheduling. Lower price. Cons Continued to block apps after my scheduled time was over. Breaks defeat the purpose of strictly curbing screen time. I’m on track to having spent 16 years of my life glued to my phone screen. That’s what Bloom, the latest salve to phone addiction, tells me as I create my account.  16 years. According to my calculations, if I weren’t attached to my phone’s addictive mechanisms, I could have spent that time running 1,700 marathons, grabbing 2,900 cups worth of coffee with friends, or adding one or two more hours of sleep to my night each night. Instead, I scroll.  And I’m not alone.  Also: The base model Kindle is my secret weapon against doomscrolling – and it’s on sale As phone addiction becomes more widespread — and as we learn how social media keeps us addicted — more companies are coming up with solutions. Bloom is one of those companies that, like the popular Brick, developed a tap-able NFC-enabled card …

How plants know when to bloom

How plants know when to bloom

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. As spring weather settles over the Northern Hemisphere, those barren branches will soon be bursting with color. Just like humans, plants have a circadian clock which helps them tell time. They rely on seasonal changes to both air temperature and sunlight to know that winter is on its way out and that it’s time to bloom. Plants can also tell when we’re stressed out. Longer days and warmer temperatures are the seasonal cues for plants that bloom in the spring. Plants with leaves are particularly sensitive to sunlight, which steadily increases from March until the summer solstice in late June. For plants like daffodils and tulips where the flower comes out of the ground or on branches like cherry trees, increasing temperatures are their main cue to bloom.  University of Washington chronobiologist Takato Imaizumi shares more about how our planet’s plants sense these seasonal changes. How do plants know when to bloom? Spring flowering explained by UW chronobiologist California’s …

2026 Sargassum bloom on track to be the largest, smelliest season yet

2026 Sargassum bloom on track to be the largest, smelliest season yet

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. It’s back and bigger than ever—but that’s not a good thing. Thanks to warming global temperatures and shifting oceanic conditions, marine biologists already expect that this year’s seasonal Sargassum blooms will grow to record-breaking proportions as they drift across the Atlantic Ocean. The island-sized biomasses aren’t only getting larger, either. tThey are also forming earlier than ever before. Sargassum is a genus of leafy brown seaweed characterized by its gas-filled sacs called pneumatocysts. These allow the algae to float and grow on the water’s surface, where it provides shelter and food for several marine organisms like fish, crabs, and eels. However, thanks to its chemical composition, Sargassum loses much of its usefulness once it washes up along shore. As it starts to decay, the biomass releases large amounts of hydrogen sulfide gas infamous for its “rotten egg” smell. Exposure to large amounts of the stinky plant life often causes throat, nose, and eye irritation, but the problems are much …

Why alien civilizations may bloom and die unseen

Why alien civilizations may bloom and die unseen

BRIAN COX: Enrico Fermi is one of the great physicists, legendary Italian physicists who laid many of the foundations of modern 20th century physics, so-called Fermi-Dirac statistics and all sorts of things. If you do a degree in physics, then you will spend a lot of time revising equations and theories that Fermi did. One of the great legends. The Fermi paradox is probably the thing he spent least time on actually, is almost one throwaway remark that he delivered. And the question is, where are they? By they, I mean aliens. – [Announcer] The Great Filter, Why Civilizations May Not Survive. – The heart of the Fermi paradox is this. We know that we live in a big old galaxy, in a big old universe. And let’s, for the purposes of this discussion, confine ourselves to the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way galaxy we now know has something like 400 billion suns. And we now know that most of those suns have planetary systems around them, so trillions of planets. The galaxy’s been around …

Provence in bloom – exploring its flower festivals and the ‘perfume capital of the world’ | Provence holidays

As I take my seat in Galimard’s Studio des Fragrances, in the Provençal town of Grasse, I limber up my nostrils for the task ahead: to create my own scent from the 126 bottles in front of me. Together they represent a world of exotic aromas, from amber and musk to ginger and saffron. But given that I have left the grey British winter behind to come here, I am more interested in capturing the sunny essence of the Côte d’Azur. Here in the hills north of Cannes, the colours pop: hillsides are full of bright yellow mimosa flowers, violets are peeping out of flowerbeds and oranges hang heavy on branches over garden walls, even though it’s not yet spring. It is the perfect antidote to the gloom back home, and the chance to bottle these very scents is a joy. Over the next two hours, with the help of perfumery expert Manon Zamoun, I blend my own perfume that I name “Mimosa trail”. The scents (natural essences or synthetic aromas), are set out on three shelves, the top …
