Guardian grows revenue to record £282m boosted by US operation

Anna Bateson, chief executive officer of The Guardian. Picture: The Guardian Guardian revenue from paying online readers grew by 17% in the year to March 2026 to reach a new record of £126m. Overall revenue for Guardian Media Group grew by 2% (£6m) to £282m in the year to the end of March 2026, despite losing around £18m in annual print revenue following the sale of The Observer to Tortoise Media in April 2025. The Guardian said this was a record revenue total for its news operation (Guardian Media Group has made more revenue in the past, but this would have included revenue from former subsidiary businesses). Revenue growth was mainly driven by the US side of the business, which was up 14% from £55.8m to £63.8m. UK revenue fell from £170.4m to £167.6m in the financial year, likely reflecting the impact of the sale of The Observer to Tortoise Media. Non-UK revenue now makes up 41% of the business. The Guardian now claims to have 1.4 million recurring paying digital supporters (up 116,000 year …

Institutional investors boosted holdings of AI infrastructure plays during first quarter

Institutional investors boosted holdings of AI infrastructure plays during first quarter

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, May 15 : Institutional investors were eager buyers of stocks in companies whose fate hinges on the rollout and adoption of artificial intelligence during the first quarter of 2026, according to a Reuters overview of filings by nearly 6,000 hedge funds, pension funds, college endowments and other asset managers with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. These quarterly 13-F filings, which provide insight into how some major investors reacted to emerging opportunities and new sources of risk or anxiety during the three-month period, show that more than 4,000 of them added to their existing holdings or initiated new positions in a group of nine companies that are big players in the AI infrastructure arena, including Oracle, Arista Networks and Vertiv. Only 146 of those entities sold holdings in the space, or only 2.5 per cent of the investors that have reported their positions to date. Major institutional investors must report any changes made to their portfolio and its composition to the SEC within 45 days of the end of each calendar quarter. …

Jeffing: I Tried This Viral Running Trend And It Boosted My Fitness In Unexpected Ways

Jeffing: I Tried This Viral Running Trend And It Boosted My Fitness In Unexpected Ways

I am that stereotypical runner and I am sure everyone in my life is sick of hearing about how strength training has transformed my workouts and my reasons for getting back into the sport in the first place. Bad news for them. I have another running obsession. “Jeffing,” named after Olympian and author Jeff Galloway, is a kind of lower-key fartlek (another 10/10 name). If both of those terms sound like gobbledegook, they refer to a period of slower walking (or running) before bursts of higher-energy sprints or jogging. Jeffing, also known as the “run walk run” or Galloway method, is ideal for beginners – a version of it is often used by Couch To 5K apps. But Galloway himself said that non-stop runners who adapt to the method correctly run “an average of 7 minutes faster in a 13.1-mile race” and over 13 minutes faster in a marathon. Personally, it’s transformed my 10K time. How does “Jeffing” work? You can pick a ratio of walking to running that works for you. That might be …

The Daily 20-Minute Workout That Boosted My VO2 Levels

The Daily 20-Minute Workout That Boosted My VO2 Levels

My VO2 has gone from average to ‘high’ according to my Apple Health When it comes to my fitness levels, it’s been a bit of a journey in the last 12 months. I was at my absolute fittest I’d ever been in April 2024 and felt amazing for it. Just when I was feeling utterly invincible for the first time in my life, I fell two metres from a rock climbing wall onto a locked out, fully extended leg. Yup – it hurt just as much as you’d think.  One fully snapped ACL, MCL and shattered meniscus later, exercise was off the cards until I could have full reconstructive surgery on my knee in September 2024. I was devastated – following surgery I was non-weight bearing for six weeks and then a gruelling physio plan came after that, where I slowly rebuilt all the strength I’d lost. Now, a year on, my VO2 max is higher than what it was pre-op. Yesterday I ran my first non-stop 5k in over a year and achieved a …

How I boosted my portable solar panels’ power by up to 30% – 11 expert-approved tips

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Positioning panels is key to the best output, as is keeping them clean. Test and care for your gear to ensure reliable solar power. Off-grid solar teaches balance: collect wisely, and consume carefully. Fixed solar panels on buildings are, well, fixed. They are installed and, more often than not, receive little to no attention until something goes wrong. Portable panels — or temporary panels, as I tend to think of them — are an entirely different matter. They thrust you into a space that blends science with ingenuity.  The sun becomes both a teacher and a lifeline, and every watt harvested stands as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the timeless romance of self-sufficiency. Also: How my portable wind turbine compares to solar panels – 2 years of testing later I’m not battling Mother Nature. I’m negotiating, or sometimes even begging: “Please give me some power so I can charge my phone to send that message back home… and do a …

Politico says merger of energy teams has boosted Iran war coverage

Politico deputy editor-in-chief Joe Schatz interviews American Petroleum Institute president Mike Sommers at the Politico Pub in CeraWeek in March 2026. Picture: CatchLight Group for Politico The impact of a major restructure of Politico’s energy and environment reporting teams was “immediately apparent” after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, bosses have said. In February the publisher merged its two, previously siloed teams of energy and environment reporters who comprise about a dozen working on Politico Pro Energy and several dozen journalists on E&E News which was acquired by Politico in 2020. Politico told Press Gazette that March was its highest single month for energy and environment consumer page views since at least January 2022, the furthest back it can compare its internal data. It said page views to its energy section were up 142% in Q1 compared to the same period last year. Politico also said the reach of B2B subscriber product Politico Pro Energy, defined as site page views and email opens combined, was up 115% this year so far compared to …
