Reusable brick walls could slash construction carbon emissions by 60%

Reusable brick walls could slash construction carbon emissions by 60%

Brick construction creates lasting materials but often ends in waste when buildings are torn down early. Engineers in Austria built reusable brick walls that can be dismantled and rebuilt, cutting emissions and debris while suggesting a different future for buildings. Construction sites often begin with new materials and end with massive piles of waste. Across the world, buildings are demolished long before the materials inside them wear out. Brick walls that could last for generations are frequently crushed and discarded after only a few decades of use. Researchers at Graz University of Technology believe that cycle needs to change. Working with Austrian brick producer wienerberger, the team has developed reusable brick wall systems designed to survive beyond the life of a single building. Instead of binding bricks together permanently with mortar, the researchers created industrially prefabricated wall elements connected through reversible joints. The walls can later be dismantled without destroying the materials, then rebuilt at another site. The project, called Re-Use Ziegelwand, could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and construction waste while giving buildings a …

Gaza Is Rebuilding With Lego-Like Bricks Made From Rubble

Gaza Is Rebuilding With Lego-Like Bricks Made From Rubble

Inside a makeshift workshop in Gaza, rebuilt after it was damaged by Israeli air strikes, Suleiman Abu Hassanin stands among piles of broken concrete, trying to give them a new form. His voice over the phone sounds tired, carrying the weight of what he is trying to do: rebuild in a place where building materials are no longer available. Gaza’s construction crisis did not begin with the latest war. For years, the Israeli blockade restricted the entry of cement, steel, and other building materials, slowing reconstruction efforts across the enclave. But after nearly two years of intensified bombardment, the scale of destruction has pushed the system far beyond collapse. According to UN estimates, Gaza now contains more than 60 million tons of rubble, while hundreds of thousands of displaced people continue to live in tents with little protection from heat or winter chill and no clear prospect for reconstruction. In that environment, rubble is no longer just debris. It is becoming one of the only construction resources left. One local response is Green Rock, a …

Best Lego Gifts for Brick Builders (2026): Smart Bricks, Video Games, and More

Best Lego Gifts for Brick Builders (2026): Smart Bricks, Video Games, and More

To address the elephant in the room: Yes, Lego bricks are made of plastic. The company makes billions of tiny bricks that proliferate all over the world and all over your living room, and they will not biodegrade and cannot be recycled. With that said, Lego bricks are machined to incredibly tight tolerances. Unless your dog chews on them, the bricks retain what Lego refers to as their “clutch power” for decades. Like so many others, my family became obsessed with Lego sets during the Covid-19 pandemic, and we still love them today. Years on, I have found no better way to while away a rainy afternoon than making tiny tyrannosaurs and pterosaurs with your son. If you and your loved ones are also obsessed with Lego sets, we have some great gift ideas for you. If not, don’t forget to check out our other gift guides; Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are coming up sooner than you think. Updated April 2026: We added the Throne Room, added more information about smart bricks, and updated …

All the Flamingo Estate Soap Bricks, Ranked (2026)

All the Flamingo Estate Soap Bricks, Ranked (2026)

Before Flamingo Estate became the go-to destination for apothecary and pantry essentials tucked into the hills of Los Angeles, the property Australian-born founder Richard Christiansen bought more than a decade ago had been a porn studio, a political activist center, a community hub, and even a radio station. Christiansen restored it into the lush seven-acre garden we see today—now famous for its Gatsby-esque dinner parties—and officially launched Flamingo Estate in 2020 as a community-supported agriculture box program designed to help local farmers. Since then, the brand’s farmer relationships have gone global, working with producers across California, Mexico, Italy, New Zealand, Japan, and Australia. My first introduction to Flamingo Estate came when someone gifted me their Olive Oil and Fuyu Persimmon Vinegar, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Before that, I’d clock the label’s naturally fragranced shampoo and conditioner popping up in very luxe outdoor showers—plus, of course, their now-viral Roma tomato candle, which gives Loewe’s version a real run for its money. After fully drinking the Kool-Aid (or rather, the brand’s ethos of “radical pleasure”) …

Germany is using heated bricks to replace gas-fired industrial boilers

Germany is using heated bricks to replace gas-fired industrial boilers

Photo: Rondo Energy Rondo Energy and Covestro broke ground on a new kind of industrial heat battery at Covestro’s Brunsbüttel chemical site in northern Germany, and it’s designed to do something industry desperately needs: make clean, reliable steam without burning fossil fuels. Thanks to a surplus of renewable energy, Germany logged 573 hours of negative electricity prices in 2025, a 25% increase from 2024. Rondo’s Heat Battery charges up when there’s a surplus of cheap renewable electricity on the grid, stores that energy as heat in specially designed bricks (pictured), and then delivers steady, high‑temperature steam around the clock for industrial processes. It’s aimed squarely at replacing fossil‑fuel‑fired boilers in facilities that run 24/7. At 100 megawatt‑hours (MWh), the Brunsbüttel system is scheduled to come online by the end of 2026. It will be tied with the 100 MWh Rondo heat battery that went into operation in California in October as the largest industrial heat battery in the world. Covestro’s project is backed by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and the European Investment Bank. Once operational, the battery is …

LEGO Smart Bricks UK release date, price and how to pre-order now

LEGO Smart Bricks UK release date, price and how to pre-order now

With almost no build-up, LEGO has dropped its biggest announcement in decades: a brand-new Smart Play brick that adds lights, sounds and interactive play to your LEGO builds. Announced at American tech show CES, LEGO has unveiled three new LEGO Star Wars sets to launch the Smart Play system. These sets will be able to emit lightsaber sounds, flashing lights and even Star Wars music in real time as you move and play with the LEGO bricks. This new Smart Play technology has been designed as a completely screen-free way to make playing with LEGO more interactive. According to Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group: “For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe. “As the world evolves, so do we — innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation. LEGO Smart Play is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this …

Lego Smart Bricks Light Up With Jedi Magic In Coming Star Wars Set — And I’m Obsessed

Lego Smart Bricks Light Up With Jedi Magic In Coming Star Wars Set — And I’m Obsessed

“I’m obsessed.” “This is even cooler than I imagined.” “I’m a Lego nerd, so I’m psyched to put these to the test.” These are just some of the reactions my fellow CES colleagues made about the Lego Smart Bricks I saw at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The tech-packed toys include an array of sensors capable of detecting other nearby building blocks, lighting up and playing music. There’s also the coolest Star Wars sound effect tie-in, but you’ll have to read on for more on that.  Star Wars Lego sets made with the new smart bricks arrive on March 1. And yes, that means TIE Fighters and smart Star Wars minifigures that will interact, making sounds and activating lights. Lego has had complex robotics kits before in several iterations — I remember when Lego had color-aware sensors in bricks and accelerometers. And I played with the Super Mario Lego sets that had little figures that could bop on other bricks and play games. These new smart bricks look like a fusion of some of those ideas, but …

Lego Smart Bricks introduce a new way to build — and they don’t require screens

Lego Smart Bricks introduce a new way to build — and they don’t require screens

Lego announced its new Smart Play system at CES on Monday, adding interactive, responsive Legos to the famously analog franchise. The Smart Play system includes a 2×4 brick, Smart Tag tiles, and Smart Minifigures. The Smart Bricks and Minifigures can sense nearby Smart Tags, which are 2×2 studless tiles with unique digital IDs that tell the Bricks and Minifigures how to act. If the Smart Tag comes in a set for building a helicopter, for example, then the Smart Brick will light up and make propeller sounds that would help bring a helicopter to life. Its built-in accelerometer would make these lights and sounds more consistent with how you’re actually playing with the helicopter, since the Brick will be able to sense when the helicopter is zooming through the sky or turned upside down. Image Credits:LEGO The Smart Bricks are powered by a patented ASIC chip, which is smaller than the size of a single Lego stud. The chip uses near-field magnetic positioning to recognize the Tags around it, as well as a miniature speaker, …
