Man killed by buffalo during Eid al-Adha sacrificial ritual in Malaysia

A man has died and another was injured after being gored by buffaloes during Eid al-Adha sacrificial rituals in the Malaysian state of Johor, police said. The first incident occurred at around 10am on Wednesday when a 45-year-old man was gored by a buffalo intended for sacrifice and rushed to Hospital Sultanah Aminah, where he died that evening. A post-mortem found the cause of death was vascular injuries to his left leg. It marks the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, and is observed with prayers and the ritual slaughter of livestock, including cattle, sheep and goats. The first incident in Malaysia took place in Kampung Tenang, a village in Ulu Tiram, a suburb of Johor Bahru. In a separate incident the same afternoon, another 45-year-old man suffered a fractured rib after being attacked by a buffalo in a nearby area. He is receiving treatment at …

Viral stardom saves ‘Trump’ buffalo from sacrifice in Bangladesh

A buffalo in Bangladesh nicknamed “Donald Trump” for its flowing blond hair has been spared from sacrifice after shooting to fame, and will instead be cared for at the national zoo. Buffalo AKG Art Museum Director Janne Sirén to Depart After 13 Years

Janne Sirén, the director of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in Upstate New York, will depart his post in October after more than a decade, opening up yet another top role at a US art institution. Sirén oversaw the museum as it expanded dramatically in 2023, adding another building to its campus that doubled the AKG’s square footage. The expansion, which cost $230 million, was well-received, both within the art press and by locals, who flocked to the museum. The AKG reported that, in the year following the reopening, the museum received 340,000 visitors, a record for the institution. Related Articles But Sirén’s leadership has more recently come under scrutiny in the local Buffalo media. His departure was announced by the museum nearly three months after the Buffalo News reported that he had used a museum loan to help finance his $710,000 home. The Erie County Comptroller’s Office alleged that Sirén had failed to pay off the museum’s loan, leading one representative to say she was “not sure why.” The Buffalo News reported that the …

A lawsuit against Buffalo Wild Wings and its boneless wings has been dismissed after a judge ruled it had “no meat on its bones.” The proposed class action lawsuit was brought in 2023 by customer Aimen Halim, who claimed the restaurant deceived customers by selling “boneless wings” that were not actually de-boned chicken wings. Halim alleged in the saucy complaint that the menu item was “essentially a chicken nugget.” However, Judge John Tharp Jr. in Chicago tossed the suit Tuesday, noting in his ruling that Halim sued Buffalo Wild Wings “over his confusion, but his complaint has no meat on its bones.” “Despite his best efforts, Halim did not ‘drum’ up enough factual allegations to state a claim,” the judge added. A lawsuit against Buffalo Wild Wings was dismissed this week after a judge ruled it had ‘no meat on its …

Buffalo AKG Hasn’t Repaid Museum Loan Used to Buy Home, State Report Finds

Janne Sirén, director of Buffalo’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery since 2013, used a museum loan to help finance a $710,000 home—more than half of which remains unpaid, including accrued interest, according to a state review. Buffalo News, citing data from the Erie County Comptroller’s Office, reported that prevailing interest rates at the time of the loan ranged between 4 and 4.5 percent. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery—now known as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum–approved the loan for Sirén at a markedly lower rate of .18 percent. It was only later, during a routine review of financial records and tax filings from county-funded cultural organizations, that the comptroller’s office found Sirén had not repaid any of the principal or interest. Related Articles  “We’re not sure why it wasn’t paid off,” Mary Hosler, deputy comptroller of the Audit Division, told Buffalo News. “Nobody had, really, any answers.” While such loans are not uncommon as a recruitment tool for museum directors, the loan appears to violate New York’s Not-For-Profit Corporation Law Section 716, which prohibits nonprofit organizations from making loans to …

The Very American Story of Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance

The Very American Story of Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance

In 1928, Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance published a memoir that caused a sensation in the literary world. It opened with his earliest memory: Barely a year old, he was riding in a moss baby carrier on his mother’s back, surrounded by women and horses. His mother’s hand was bleeding, and she was crying. Long Lance wrote that when he’d recounted this memory to his aunt years later, he’d been told that he was remembering the “exciting aftermath of an Indian fight” in which his uncle Iron Blanket had just been killed by the Blackfeet Tribe’s traditional enemies, the Crow. His mother’s hand was bleeding because she had amputated her own finger in mourning. Explore the February 2026 Issue Check out more from this issue and find your next story to read.
