The University at Buffalo is celebrating the deployment of eight new 40-foot electric transit buses, which are now quietly transporting students, staff, and campus visitors per day. The buses are the first in UB’s Stampede fleet to ditch diesel, kicking off a four-year effort to electrify the university’s campus transportation system. Along with solutions provider WeDriveU and fleet electrification specialists Zenobē, the University at Buffalo’s newest buses are-catching and emissions-free, and are the first of the UB Stampede fleet to transition away from diesel fuel. “Our goal is to provide safe, reliable transportation while continuing to reduce our environmental impact,” said Christopher Austin, UB Director of Parking and Transportation. “These buses help us do both. Photo: ChargePoint Santa Monica, California’s public Big Blue Bus fleet is getting 130 DC fast-charging ports as it works toward building an entirely electric fleet by 2032. The chargers are part of the city’s $56 million investment in electric transit infrastructure. ChargePoint will supply its Express Plus charging hardware and fleet management software, while power management company Eaton will provide the electrical equipment needed to deliver power across the depot. The project will be one of ChargePoint’s largest transit deployments to date. Powering an electric bus depot takes more than installing a row of chargers. The electrical system needs to support a lot of large vehicles charging at once, and the buses must be ready when their routes begin without overloading the site or disrupting daily service. As the new school year kicks off, school districts are facing a challenging math problem: the high cost of diesel. The price of a gallon of diesel is up nearly $2 compared with this time last year. That is meaningful for schools, considering that around 90% of the United States’ 480,000 school buses run on diesel. Nationally, the average price was $5.62 for a gallon as of Wednesday, according to AAA. This time last year, it cost $3.70. School districts nationwide have been wrestling with the issue since spring, when the war with Iran started and fuel prices rose. A May survey produced by organizations that represent school superintendents and bus companies found that more than half the districts surveyed said diesel prices were already pushing them over budget.
