Bencharki leads Al Ahly to 3-0 win over Zamalek in Cairo derby

Cairo, May 1 : Forward Achraf Bencharki scored twice and set up another goal as Al Ahly beat Zamalek 3-0 in the Egyptian Premier League on Friday. The Moroccan opened the scoring with a header in the Cairo derby in the 18th minute but did not celebrate against his former club. Al Ahly doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Bencharki provided the assist for Hussein El Shahat, who chipped the ball over Zamalek goalkeeper El Mahdi Soliman. “It was a poor match for us and an even worse result,” Zamalek coach Motamed Gamal told reporters. “I am sad for Zamalek’s supporters. I had hoped they would leave the stadium happy after achieving a positive result.” Both sides missed penalties in the second half. Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved Hossam Abdelmaguid’s spot kick in the 55th minute before Mahmoud Trezeguet struck the left post 11 minutes later. Bencharki made it 3-0 in the 74th minute after a through ball from Emam Ashour, celebrating with the Al Ahly fans. He has now scored four …

Cairo sheesha cafe : NPR

Far-Flung Postcards is a weekly series in which NPR’s international team shares moments from their lives and work around the world. Downtown Cairo, or Wust el-Balad as it’s known locally, is a treasure trove of hidden gems. Imprinted on every high-ceilinged building, arched balcony and iconic roundabout are relics that feel like love letters from the past. Relics like the more than century-old Greek Club’s veranda that overlooks a roundabout with a bronze statue of Talaat Harb, who championed Egyptian economic independence from foreign influence. The neighborhood’s old cinemas and teahouses still stand where Cairo’s elites and British officers once sat. Wust el-Balad was designed when cars were still a luxury, and life moved more slowly. Only by walking its wide pedestrian streets can the scale and detail of its neoclassical, Art Deco and Baroque-inspired architecture be fully witnessed. Wust el-Balad’s charm unfolds in layers, some of it discreet and tucked down side streets like the one in this picture I took on a visit this winter. Here, at this no-frills sheesha (hookah) café, all …

IFFR 2026 Film Clips ‘Complaint No. 713317’ About Cairo Retired Couple

Magdy and Sama are in their 60s and just want a quiet life in Cairo. Too bad that the retired couple’s fridge breaks down, turning their apartment into a stage on which the tragicomedies of love, loss, ageing and Al Qahr (more on that below) play out against the background of farcical bureaucracy and crumbling attitudes and value systems. A corrupt maintenance company is also a key player in this Kafka-esque set-up for Complaint No. 713317, the debut feature film from writer-director Yasser Shafiey (short films The Dream of a Scene, Intense Practice to Improve Performance, The Man Who Swallowed the Radio), who started his career as a jewellery designer. The movie, starring well-known Egyptian acting icons Mahmoud Hemida and Sherine, as well as Hana Shiha, and Mohamed Radwan, will world premiere in the Bright Future program of the 55th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) on Feb. 1. As you can maybe already tell, the story of Complaint No. 713317 is about way more than a fridge. “What starts as a simple fridge repair drags a …
