King Charles and Queen Camilla’s highly-anticipated state visit has officially begun. On Monday afternoon, as the royals touched down at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, they kicked off a four-day trip, hosted by President Donald Trump, that will see the monarchs visit Washington, DC, New York and Virginia, in honor of America’s forthcoming semiquincentennial. So, what’s on the agenda? After receiving a warm welcome upon landing, Charles and Camilla will head out to a private tea with the president and First Lady Melania Trump before going to a garden party. Come Tuesday, King Charles is scheduled to address Congress. This year, Queen Elizabeth II would have turned 100. So, to celebrate the centenary of her birth on April 21, the royal family has prepared a packed program of tributes and festivities. Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96, after 70 years of the longest reign in British history. To honor her, three official events will be held in the presence of senior members of the Windsor dynasty, starting with King Charles III. Together with his wife, Queen Camilla and other members of the family, the monarch will visit the British Museum to see the final model of the future Elizabeth II memorial, in the company of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Lord Janvrin, the Queen’s former Private Secretary. They will meet the artists who imagined the monument, and watch a short film documenting its conception. After two years in which they skipped the royal family’s traditional Easter Sunday services, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and their children have returned to the fold. On Sunday, the Walses joined King Charles III and Queen Camilla at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, even leading the procession to the church. And this year, the family seemed to coordinate their look, not unlike the couple’s matching fits at the BAFTAs. Kate Middleton, who traditionally opts for shades of blue on Easter, donned an elegant cream ensemble similar to the the long coat she wore to services in 2017. A key part of my role as a royal photographer for Getty Images is to document historic moments—images that, hopefully, will be looked back on decades, maybe even centuries from now. They are part of the visual fabric of British history. Over time, of course, professional relationships are built up across the board: behind the scenes, with palace staff, security and, to some extent, with the protagonists themselves. That familiarity is part of the job and for me it’s something that makes it so enjoyable. Meeting people you’ve been working with for 20 years in different environments is always a special experience.
