These polite Canadian lawbreakers may soon be going legal under new e-bike law

The issue of e-bike scofflaws has grown considerably over the last few years, normally taking the form of teenagers on fast e-bikes illegally cruising down sidewalks or recklessly riding through intersections. But as it turns out, Canada’s largest province is full of e-bike scofflaws of a different variety: parents simply wanting to bring their kids to school without using a car. In Ontario, home to over a third of Canada’s population, laws governing micromobility devices like e-bikes do not permit anyone under 16 on board, either as the main rider or a passenger. Despite the ban, every school day, there are thousands of parents who line up to drop their kids off at school on the back of a cargo e-bike, in full violation of the law. It’s a popular form of school drop-off vehicle that helps parents save time, cut down on fuel costs, and get more fresh air with their kids. Local mother Jodi Enns uses a cargo e-bike to bring her two kids to school in the morning. “This bike has changed …

The Most Powerful Women in Canadian Entertainment, 2026

The Most Powerful Women in Canadian Entertainment, 2026

There was a time, not long ago, when Canada was known mostly for its Mounties, maple syrup and moose. These days, though, what’s grabbing attention is its screen industry: TV shows, films, actors, producers, financiers and filmmakers with a growing grip on the global business. Any country that can turn gay hockey players, Indigenous Arctic comedy and a genial police procedural about a St. John’s detective and his German shepherd into global streaming hits is clearly doing something right. Behind all that success is a network of women making the money move, the cameras roll and the deals travel: studio executives, public funders, union negotiators, festival chiefs, producers, directors, actors and below-the-line power players who help decide what gets made, who gets backed and how far Canadian stories can go. The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2026 Women in Entertainment Canada Power List spotlights the executives and creatives shaping the industry north of the border — and, increasingly, everywhere else. Francesca Accinelli Chief Program Officer, Telefilm Canada Accinelli has spent nearly two decades helping Canadian stories travel. A …

Kimi Antonelli wins Canadian GP after George Russell retires from lead

Kimi Antonelli wins Canadian GP after George Russell retires from lead

No wonder Russell admitted to being “a bit lost for words” once he had finally made it back to the paddock, on the back of a marshal’s scooter. “I mean, everything just turned off all of a sudden,” he reported of his failure, which came at the end of the straight leading to the final chicane, causing Russell to go straight over the grass, cutting the corner, before pulling his car up on the side of the track. “The engine stopped. No electronics. Nothing. “I’ve got to be honest, though, I’m proud of my weekend. Pole in the sprint, won the sprint. Pole in the main race, I was leading after a good battle with Kimi. There’s not much more I could have done. So I’ll leave satisfied. I’m pretty damn frustrated, but there’s not much I can do.” The day had dawned dark, damp and cold, as forecast. With a light drizzle preceding the race, teams were left with a bit of a conundrum; whether to start on the intermediate tyres and hope the …

Russell out of Canadian Grand Prix with engine failure

Russell out of Canadian Grand Prix with engine failure

MONTREAL, May 24 : George Russell retired from the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday with a power unit failure after a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle for the lead with Mercedes teammate and Formula One world championship leader Kimi Antonelli. Italian Antonelli, chasing his fourth win in a row and 18 points clear of Russell after Saturday’s sprint race won by the Briton, took over at the front. Russell had started on pole position in Montreal for the third year in succession with his 19-year-old teammate alongside on the front row. The car slowed and stopped by the side of the track on lap 30 of 68. Russell thumped the car with his hands and threw the headrest out, a gesture noted by race control, before stepping clear as the virtual safety car was deployed. Source link

White hydrogen found in billion-year-old Canadian rock could fuel clean energy production

White hydrogen found in billion-year-old Canadian rock could fuel clean energy production

Deep beneath northern Ontario, some of Earth’s oldest rocks are quietly giving off hydrogen. At Kidd Creek mine near Timmins, geochemists tracked gas seeping from boreholes drilled two to nearly three kilometers below the surface. What they found was not a one-off puff or a short-lived flare. The hydrogen kept coming, in measurable amounts, over months. In some cases, it lasted for more than a decade. That matters because hydrogen already plays a central role in modern industry, especially in fertilizer, methanol, and steel production. Yet most of it still comes from fossil fuels or other energy-intensive processes. The new work suggests some of that supply might instead come straight from the crust. This would be possible in places where the right rocks already lie under active mining districts. Researchers from the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa report that all 35 boreholes they analyzed at Kidd Creek released hydrogen. Across the dataset, the average discharge came to 0.008 tonnes per borehole per year. When extrapolated across the mine’s 14,801 boreholes, that works …

Canadian Museum of Human Rights Facing Legal Threat Over Nakba Show

Canadian Museum of Human Rights Facing Legal Threat Over Nakba Show

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg has been threatened with legal action by an Israeli organization over an exhibition about the Nakba, with the group arguing that the presentation “politicizes” history, according to local media reports.   Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center announced this week that it had sent a formal legal demand to the museum’s board of trustees and senior leadership protesting “Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present,” an exhibition scheduled to open at the museum on June 27. A statement included with the filing from Shurat HaDin president Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, first reported by the Winnipeg Sun, warns the federally funded museum of “contributing to division and misunderstanding” by “erasing Jewish history” and “delegitimizing Jewish self-determination,” adding that the exhibition could fuel “hostility against the Jewish community.”  Related Articles The exhibition focuses on the expulsion of approximately 750,000 Palestinians in 1948 following the creation of the State of Israel—an event known in Arabic as “the catastrophe,” or al-Nakba. According to Amnesty International, the roughly 7 million Palestinian refugees living today comprise one of the world’s largest displaced populations. The exhibition’s website describes the show as exploring “the …
