The head of Canal+, France’s largest film producer, has said the studio will no longer work with hundreds of cinema professionals, who signed a petition voicing concern over the growing influence of the studio’s rightwing billionaire owner Vincent Bolloré. More than 600 French industry figures, including actors Juliette Binoche, Adèle Haenel and Swann Arlaud, and directors Sepideh Farsi and Arthur Harari, signed the open letter, published earlier this week, calling out Bolloré’s right-wing politics and his expanding control over the French film industry. “Leaving French cinema in the hands of a far-right owner,” the letter reads, risked “not only the standardisation of films, but a fascist takeover of the collective imagination.” Through his media company Vivendi, Bolloré already owns Canal+, France’s largest pay-TV company, and its subsidiary Studiocanal, Europe’s leading film production company. Bolloré’s media empire includes CNews, a popular French news channel that figures on the left have attacked for allegedly giving a platform to far-right voices. The Medina Triennial, a new recurring art exhibition set to launch in the titular Western New York village this summer, has revealed the artist list for its inaugural edition, due to open on June 6 in close proximity to the Erie Canal. The 39 participants include a range of artists well-known on the biennial circuit. Lina Lapelytė, one of the artist’s behind the Golden Lion–winning Lithuanian Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, is taking part, staging Faithfully Recording, through which local singers and construction workers will build a sculpture together. Related Articles Taysir Batniji, a Palestinian photographer, will count the Medina Triennial as his third biennial this year, after appearances in ones held in Saudi Arabia and Sydney, and Tania Candiani, a Mexican artist, will stage a new commission called Two Waters, one of many works here dealing with bodies of water. The owner of a ‘pirate boat’ has described how his barge has been left grounded after a stretch of canal in Manchester city centre suddenly drained for the second time in six months. Army veteran Dave Marshall, 53, woke up on board his canal boat – known locally as the Manchester Pirate Boat because of the way it has been decorated – and wondered why he found himself pushed up against the wall on Wednesday morning. When he looked outside he saw the reason: a stretch of the Rochdale Canal beside New Islington Marina had all but drained. Max Levai is expanding into Chelsea at a moment when much of the market is pulling back. The former president of Marlborough Gallery will open a 7,000-square-foot flagship at 529 West 20th Street this fall, his first permanent New York space after several years of operating between pop-ups, international projects like his presentation of works by Frank Auerbach at the 2024 Venice Biennale, and his Montauk compound, The Ranch. “Having a gallery that is permanent… has been on my mind for a while,” Levai told ARTnews this week by phone. “There’s a roster of artists I’m motivated to provide a proper stage for.”  Related Articles That stage, he believes, still belongs in Chelsea. Canal+ Group has named Anne‑Laure Tingry its first-ever chief data & AI (artificial intelligence) officer. She will be reporting to Maxime Saada, chairman and CEO of Canal+, and also join the media company’s executive committee. “As the global media and entertainment group steps up its focus on artificial intelligence, Anne‑Laure Tingry will be responsible for leading Canal+’s data and AI strategy across all its markets and overseeing the implementation of projects in these areas,” the company said. Canal+ recently struck AI deals with OpenAI and Google Cloud. Starting in June, Canal+ will “roll out a major evolution of the Canal+ App using the technology from OpenAI to power content search and discovery,” the firm said. “This new feature represents a major breakthrough in delivering a more intuitive, intelligent, and personalized user experience.” In addition, Google Cloud and Canal+ struck a multi-year partnership focused on artificial intelligence. Iran is threatening to block one of the most important shipping routes in the world. The nation revealed it is ready to block the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which lies between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. It is a major route allowing much of the world’s shipping to pass through. Donald Trump is already facing a backlash back home with no end in sight to the Middle East conflict, The Mirror reports. Moller-Maersk and Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Co. The notice formalized a Supreme Court ruling last month that the concessions for the Balboa and Cristobal terminals near the Panama Canal, which Panama Port Company (PPC), a subsidiary of CK Hutchison, had held for more than two decades, were unconstitutional. The Panamanian government on Monday formally assumed control of the port facilities, including cranes, vehicles, computer systems and software under a decree aimed at ensuring uninterrupted operations until a new concession is awarded within 18 months.
