Some buyers turn to lawyers after dealers fail to act, even while the car is still under warranty. “It’s always very similar – the engine stalls, it’s a faulty vehicle. I have to get a tow truck to come, and then I approach (the dealer) and say, ‘Look, the engine is faulty, can you fix it?’ They don’t answer. They don’t do anything.” A lawyer can send a letter of demand, giving a dealer an opportunity to resolve the dispute without going to court. But Mr Roy said the dealers in the cases he has handled did not respond to such letters. “I will have to advise my clients – look, if they are not scared enough from a law firm’s letter of demand, means they just don’t care. They will do something to evade liability – sell the company, sell their assets, all that, they will disappear.” Dealerships can also change their names. BEIJING: China’s market regulator said on Friday (Sep 18) that electric vehicle maker BYD will immediately recall more than 180,000 cars in the country to resolve a manufacturing defect affecting a brake pedal component. The exercise covers 183,211 Qin and Tang series vehicles produced between 2014 and 2022, as the defect in a batch of brake pedal stopper pads puts them at risk of cracking or detaching over time. In extreme cases, this could cause brake lights to stay on even if the pedal is not pressed, potentially misleading other road users and creating a safety risk, the State Administration for Market Regulation said. In its regulatory filing, BYD said it would replace the affected component free of charge through authorised dealers. Separately, Chinese EV maker Nio is recalling 686 Firefly-branded electric vehicles over a manufacturing defect in a steering system component, the market regulator said. In extreme cases, the defect causes a loss of power steering assistance, it added. The company will inspect affected vehicles and replace the faulty wiring harness free of charge. …

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve just raised the cost of money — bad news for borrowers, good news for savers. The Fed increased its benchmark interest rate Wednesday by a quarter-point, the first rate hike since the summer of 2023. The hike will likely make it even costlier to borrow for homes, autos and other purchases. But if you’ve been socking money away, you’ll probably earn a bit more interest on your savings. The increase boosts the Fed’s target rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. Why is the Fed raising rates? The short answer: inflation. Inflation has remained above the Fed’s 2% target for more than five years. The Labor Department reported Friday that consumer prices rose 3.4% in August compared to a year earlier, while the monthly increase quadrupled from July to hit 0.4%. The Fed’s goal is to slow consumer and business spending by raising the cost of borrowing, thereby reducing demand for homes, cars and other goods and services, eventually cooling the economy and reducing upward pressure on prices. …

For the person in the front seat, this opens up new possibilities. Eat, game, watch, work. Or doze. To help you catch some z’s, the enthusiast demonstrates that the Cybercab’s seats can recline. “You can really go back,” he says. “You can really just sleep here.” Or maybe don’t. In the official Cybercab rider guide, Tesla says passengers in its autonomous vehicles should keep their seat backs reclined no more than 35 degrees from vertical, with their seatbelts snug across their hips and their feet flat on the floor.
