Pope Leo Is Challenging Much More Than Big Tech

Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical “on safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence,” has received widespread praise. This isn’t surprising. A popular and learned world leader with a significant degree of moral authority is pointing out the dangers of a deeply unpopular technology created by deeply unpopular people. The laudatory coverage of the encyclical is justified, but it has obscured perhaps Leo’s most important insight. Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”) is not only—or even mostly—about AI itself. And the pope is challenging much more than Big Tech. To be sure, Leo devotes considerable space to addressing the technology and its purveyors. In one of the document’s most-quoted passages, he declares that AI “must be disarmed” and prevented “from dominating humanity.” Elsewhere, he argues for the need “to establish adequate regulatory tools capable of upholding justice and curbing the distorting effects of technological power” on human relationships, working conditions, public discourse, international affairs, and much else. A Norwegian journalist who publicly challenged Narendra Modi over press freedom in India during his visit to Oslo has claimed that her Instagram and Facebook accounts were suspended days after the exchange triggered a political controversy. Helle Lyng, an Oslo-based reporter with the newspaper Dagsavisen, said on Wednesday that she had been locked out of both Meta-owned platforms following a wave of attention surrounding her questioning of the Indian prime minister and senior diplomats. “If you’re trying to reach me on Instagram or Facebook, I would like to let you know I have been suspended from both accounts. I have wanted to respond to as many Indians as possible, but my responses will now be delayed. I hope I will get my accounts back,” she wrote on X, tagging Meta. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear from Catholic preschools that say it’s unconstitutional to exclude them from a state-funded program because they won’t admit kids from LGBTQ+ families. In the latest religious rights case for the conservative-majority court, the justices will hear from Colorado’s St. Mary Catholic Parish and the Archdiocese of Denver, which are supported by the Republican Trump administration. The schools argue that Colorado is violating their religious rights by barring them from the taxpayer-funded universal preschool program over their faith-based admission policies. They say the state has allowed other preschools to prioritize children with disabilities or those from low-income families, so admission based on religious beliefs about gender and same-sex marriage should be allowed, too. The state said that religious schools are welcome to participate but are required to follow nondiscrimination laws. Income and disability decisions are in line with those rules, Colorado said.
