Clearlake, which already held a 61.5% stake in the club, is also acquiring the stake of Chelsea Chairman Todd Boehly, giving it full control of the storied club, according to Chelsea. Chelsea are the great entertainers but remain weak in defence

Chelsea are the great entertainers but remain weak in defence

Chelsea might just be this season’s Premier League entertainers and yet head coach Xabi Alonso seemingly believes less is more when it comes to possession. Alonso has started with two wins from two League games in charge of Chelsea, with seven goals scored and five conceded. So far, it has been a lot of fun – if not entirely convincing. But perhaps the most interesting numbers are around how much – or how little – Chelsea are having the ball. Having finished their 3-2 victory over Fulham with 38.5 per cent of possession, Chelsea had just 25.6 per cent in the 4-2 success over Brighton. Chelsea’s third goal, scored in the 32nd minute, best summed up the London club under Alonso to date. It took the home side three passes to go from the edge of their own penalty area to Joao Pedro scoring against his former club. Jorrel Hato passed the ball to Morgan Rogers, he then released Hato down the left and the wing-back slid the ball across for Pedro to finish. It …

World Cup 2026: Tuchel axes Foden, Palmer in surprise England shake-up

Big names were left out of England’s World Cup squad on Friday, with Phil Foden and Cole Palmer surprise omissions from Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man roster. There was no place either for Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold or Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw in the group headed to the tournament in United States, Canada and Mexico. “I think from day one, we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect 26 most talented players,” Tuchel said. “Teams win championships. It’s as simple as that. And what we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team.” England is trying to win a first men’s title since lifting the World Cup in 1966. Foden was the double player of the year in England with Manchester City just two years ago. Chelsea’s Palmer was one of England’s star players at the European Championship in 2024, scoring in the final against Spain. Yet both players endured …

Players get their way with Rosenior sacking… and finally show some fight

Players get their way with Rosenior sacking… and finally show some fight

Hello and welcome to all the live action form today’s FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Leeds at Wembley. Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane is certain the prospect of reaching an FA Cup final will be motivation for his players following their woeful league run that led to Liam Rosenior’s sacking. Five consecutive defeats with no goals scored is the club’s worst run since 1912 and Tuesday’s 3-0 hammering by Brighton proved the final straw for Rosenior, who was dismissed three months into a six-and-a-half-year contract. Today’s semi-final against Leeds could not have come at a worse moment but McFarlane, who has been handed the reins until the end of the season, insisted the capitulation at the Amex Stadium – widely considered to have been the worst performance of the season – will not inhibit the team as they seek a return to Wembley in May. “Really disappointing,” he said of Tuesday’s loss that prompted the hierarchy to remove the manager. “It was hard to watch that, hard to see that. To be dominated …

Chelsea fans turn on Rosenior as club lurches deeper into crisis

Good evening and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live coverage of Brighton & Hove Albion vs Chelsea from the Amex Stadium. The pressure continues to build on Chelsea and their manager Liam Rosenior ahead of their match tonight. Chelsea are coming off the back of a 1-0 defeat at home on Saturday, against a Manchester United side with a makeshift defence. That was their fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League, and their fourth consecutive league game without a goal. The loss dealt a blow to their already stuttering Champions League hopes, and they begin tonight’s game in sixth place, seven points behind Liverpool in fifth. Missing out on the tournament next season could lead to an unwanted exodus of some of their biggest stars, with Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez already linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge. If Chelsea were to suffer another defeat tonight, there would likely be doubts over whether Rosenior will still be the man in charge of the team for the weekend’s FA Cup semi-final tie against Leeds United. Brighton, …

Man Utd boost Champions League dreams and leave Chelsea in disarray

Man Utd boost Champions League dreams and leave Chelsea in disarray

It is sixth versus third at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea host Manchester United, with the race for the Champions League places hotting up. Manchester United won the reverse fixture 2-1 at Old Trafford back in September, with Chelsea spending most of the game down to 10 men after Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute red card. If Manchester United were to win tonight, they would complete a league double over Chelsea for just the second time after the 2019/20 campaign. Chelsea have lost just one of their last 12 home league meetings with Manchester United. Chelsea lost 3-0 at home against Manchester City last weekend. Chelsea have just one Premier league win in their last seven games and go into tonight’s game four points behind Liverpool, who occupy the final Champions League place in fifth. “That is the great thing about the quality we have in this team,” Liam Rosenior said. “We are capable of a run, but capability is one thing and producing it is another. Time is running out, so we need to be as close …

Rosenior refuses to respond to Fernandez agent’s comments as Chelsea hit seven

Good evening and welcome to our next instalment of the FA Cup quarter-finals as Chelsea host Port Vale at Stamford Bridge. It’s the club sixth in the Premier League versus the side rooted to the bottom of the third tier. As we’ve just returned from an international break, you would assume it was a quiet week for Chelsea? Well, it’s been quite the opposite. Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior confirmed that Enzo Fernandez has been given a two-game ban because of his controversial comments regarding his future, meaning he will miss this match and next week’s league meeting with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. Following the demoralising 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, vice-captain Fernandez plunged his Chelsea future into doubt, telling ESPN Argentina he didn’t know if he would stay at the club. In the international break, he fuelled Real Madrid links by saying: “I really like Madrid – it’s similar to Buenos Aires.” Marc Cucurella was also vocal in the media, criticising Chelsea’s ownership and questioning the club’s project. The …
