Ex-armed forces chief warns UK armed forces ‘on brink of disaster’ | UK | News

Britain’s armed forces are teetering on the “brink of disaster” owing to chronic underinvestment, the former head of the Royal Navy has warned. Lord West of Spithead, who commanded the force for four years in the early 2000s, called on the Government to set out precisely how it intends to raise the funds for the forthcoming Defence Investment Plan. He was amongst a number of peers who rounded on the current state of the armed forces, as their former chief, Lord Stirrup, cautioned that an inadequate funding announcement would perpetuate decades of “hollowing out” of the services. Meanwhile, Lib Dem peer Lord Lee of Trafford, a former defence minister, declared that the condition of the Royal Navy is a “national embarrassment”. The Government has confirmed that the Defence Investment Plan (Dip), which will outline long-term funding and strategy for the armed forces, will be published ahead of the Nato summit in Ankara, Turkey, next month. Defence minister Lord Coaker acknowledged the shortcomings, conceding that the Government ought to have done more to convince the public …

Rollins calls Texas ag chief ‘unserious’ amid screwworm threat

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins, center, poses for a photo with Oklahoma Agriculture Secretary Blayne Arthur, left, and Texas Agriculture Secretary Sid Miller, right, following a press conference discussing measures dealing with the New World screwworm at the Texas Capitol, Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, in Austin, Texas. Rodolfo Gonzalez | AP Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Monday called Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller “unserious” after he criticized the USDA’s response to the growing threat from the flesh-eating New World Screwworm. Miller, who lost the March Republican primary in a bid for a fourth term despite winning President Donald Trump’s endorsement, has repeatedly slammed the USDA’s response after the parasitic pest was detected in Texas last week. He has argued that the federal department acted too slowly to contain the pest and ignored a response mechanism that he has pushed. At a Monday news conference in Texas on the USDA’s response, Rollins was asked about Miller’s recent assertion that ranchers would not report a case on their farms over fear that the government would …

Ukraine Recaptures More Than 600 Square Km of Territory in 2026, Military Chief Says

June 8 (Reuters) – Ukrainian forces have recaptured more than 600 square km of territory so far this year, Ukraine’s top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Monday, the latest sign of shifting momentum after years of slow but relentless Russian gains. In ‌May alone, Ukraine recaptured 100 square ‌km more of territory than it lost, Syrskyi said on the Telegram messaging app. Syrskyi did not specify where the gains took place, saying only that in certain areas of the 1,200 km (800-mile) frontline, Ukrainian forces continued to maintain the initiative. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also said last month that Ukraine had recaptured around 600 square km in 2026. Reuters was not able to verify the assertions. Independently determining lines of territorial control in Ukraine is difficult because of drone warfare that has created a wide no-man’s land “kill zone” along the front. But independent groups that map the battlefield have also reported Russia’s total advances slowing or reversing in recent months, for the first time since a failed Ukrainian counter-offensive in 2023. Syrskyi said Russian …

Residents of French village say US defense chief Hegseth not welcome for D-Day visit

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday travelled to Normandy to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the World War II D-Day landings. But after making a speech at the American military cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, he conspicuously skipped afternoon’s main international ceremony marking the anniversary of the Allied landings, which helped herald the end of World War II. His presence was not missed by some residents of the village hosting the ceremony, Langrune-sur-Mer, who said the US official was not welcome there. “He has very warlike views and it seems to us that this man does not share our democratic values,” Sylvie Lamy Thepaut, a member of the municipal association Langrune en commun, told BFM TV. A message on the association’s website called for Hegseth’s visit to be cancelled on the grounds that the Pentagon chief “espouses values contrary to democracy, human rights and peace” and had made “numerous anti-European remarks”, “warlike statements” and “American supremacist pronouncements”. “The honor of Langrune, that of France, and the memory of the young Allied soldiers – American, British, Canadian – who died …

High fuel costs to trigger airline failures and consolidation, industry chief says

High fuel costs to trigger airline failures and consolidation, industry chief says

RIO DE JANEIRO: Soaring jet fuel prices driven by conflict in the Middle East are likely to push more airlines into bankruptcy and spur more sector consolidation this year and next, the head of the global airline body said on Saturday (Jun 6). Global airlines are grappling with higher fuel costs driven by the US and Israel’s war with Iran, which has choked jet fuel supplies and disrupted key air corridors, forcing costly detours. Budget carriers have been among the hardest hit, lacking higher margin revenue streams such as premium cabins, high-paying travellers and credit card loyalty programs. The strain is already showing: US budget airline Spirit Airlines collapsed last month, and it will not be the last, said Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association, the industry’s main trade body. “Unfortunately, I think there will be some carriers that will find this high fuel price very difficult to cope with,” Walsh told Reuters at IATA’s annual summit in Rio de Janeiro, adding he expects some airlines to go out of business …

Microsoft AI chief says company was “set free” from OpenAI to pursue superintelligence

Microsoft AI chief says company was “set free” from OpenAI to pursue superintelligence

For three years, Microsoft’s artificial intelligence story has been inseparable from OpenAI. The partnership — cemented by a cumulative investment exceeding $13 billion — gave Microsoft early access to the most advanced AI models on the planet, catapulting its Copilot products into the enterprise mainstream and adding hundreds of billions of dollars to its market capitalization. To the outside world, Microsoft’s AI strategy was OpenAI. Mustafa Suleyman wants to change that narrative. In an exclusive sit-down interview with VentureBeat at Microsoft Build 2026, the CEO of Microsoft AI disclosed that a contractual change with OpenAI roughly six months ago granted his division the formal authority to pursue what he openly calls “superintelligence” — using Microsoft’s own researchers, its own data pipelines, and its own custom silicon. “We were only sort of set free from our contract with OpenAI about six months ago to formally pursue superintelligence,” Suleyman said. “So this is very early days.” The comment, delivered matter-of-factly backstage at the Fort Mason Center here, offers the clearest signal yet of a strategic inflection point …

White House to Replace National Security Council’s Europe Chief Amid Broader Shake-Up

White House to Replace National Security Council’s Europe Chief Amid Broader Shake-Up

By Gram Slattery, Humeyra Pamuk and Jonathan Landay WASHINGTON, June 4 (Reuters) – The White House’s top Europe expert is set to leave in the coming days, part of a staff shake-up that some sources say could give Secretary of State Marco Rubio tighter day-to-day control over policymaking at the National Security Council. Charles McLaughlin, senior director for European and Russian Affairs, is expected to depart as a series of personnel moves effectively places more Rubio allies in key ‌NSC roles, according to four people familiar with ‌the changes who requested anonymity to discuss non-public personnel moves. The moves suggest Rubio and his team may be taking a more active role in managing and staffing the NSC, a shift that could result in the once-powerful national security body regaining some of its former clout. Rubio also serves as President Donald Trump’s acting national security adviser. European allies are increasingly anxious about the direction of U.S. policy under Trump. Trump has lately adopted a harsh tone toward many NATO allies, accusing them of failing to help …

Netflix Euro Content Chief Outlines Approach to AI,Regulation

Netflix Euro Content Chief Outlines Approach to AI,Regulation

Netflix has thoughts on AI and other regulation, Larry Tanz, vp of content for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Netflix, made clear at the Enders TMT Leaders Live conference in London on Thursday. Highlighting the streamer’s investment in the British film and TV industry, Tanz said that Netflix has filmed in 225-plus cities and towns across the U.K. since 2016. “We’re additive to that local industry,” not a global power that ends up putting its revenue in a “black box” back in the U.S. but reinvesting in more local programming. Concluded Tanz: “We do not accept the argument that Netflix is simply passing through. We are part of the industry.” The rise of user-, and increasingly AI-generated, programming and possible regulations focused around AI and investment themes pose potential risks, he argued, suggesting that regulation may one day “dictate not just how much we invest but what we make.” Netflix “would be discouraged from taking risks on new and emerging voices in the case of “one-size-fits-all regulation,” Tanz warned. That could funnel …
