For the latest chapter in Sony’s Spider-Verse, Spider-Noir creator and co-showrunner Oren Uziel was already a fan of the noir genre and Spider-Man before he signed on. That meant he and actor-producer Nicolas Cage could spend more of their time, all the way back to writing the pilot, unpacking a single question: “What if we made a Bogart movie where Bogart just happened to be Spider-Man?”  “Every single day he’d come to set with a different reference: ‘This is Bogart from The Big Sleep, this is going to be Peter Lorre. This is going to be Edward G. Robinson,’” Uziel, whose own inspirations included Third Man, Double Indemnity, The Thin Man, His Girl Friday, L.A. Confidential, Miller’s Crossing and Casablanca, said of Cage’s commitment to shaping the character and world. “Beyond that, we didn’t want to make a version of Spider-Man that anyone had seen before. Project Hail Mary continues its out-of-this-world box office performance. After earning $14.6 million on Friday, the Ryan Gosling-led movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s sci-fi epic is on course to decline a scant 34 percent to $53.1 million to boast the best hold in recent memory for movies that opened in the same range, including Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (54 percent) and 2024’s Dune: Part 2 (44 percent). That would put Project Hail Mary‘s worldwide cume well north of $200 million through Sunday, including an anticipated $137 million domestically and more than $100 million at the international box office. Opening well ahead of expectations last weekend, the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed Project Hail Mary blasted off with a domestic launch of $80.6 million, the best showing of the year to date and the second-best in a decade for a non-sequel or franchise title behind Oppenheimer ($52.5 million). The popularity for Project Hail Mary continues to soar since its massive opening weekend at the box office, which has given oxygen to plenty of social media discourse. Ryan Gosling stars in directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller‘s sci-fi epic that surpassed $80 million domestically in its debut frame to represent Amazon MGM Studios‘ top opening weekend.
