Trump floats renaming Strait of Hormuz the ‘Trump Strait’

Trump floats renaming Strait of Hormuz the ‘Trump Strait’

President Donald Trump on Wednesday floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz — the central point of contention in the ongoing war against Iran that the U.S. and Israel started — after himself. The proposal via a Truth Social post came less than a week after Trump, who is locked in an intensifying feud with Canada, signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” “Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote in the post Wednesday morning. “Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote. It was not immediately clear how the president would attempt to implement a name change for the strait, which is not near the U.S. The order renaming Lake Ontario directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and his department to update the Geographic Names Information System with the new name. Canada rejected the change, though Google and Apple have recently updated …

The meeting will include Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, National Energy Dominance Council Executive Director Jarrod Agen and representatives from small, medium and large refiners and distributors, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting hasn’t been announced. “President Trump is laser-focused on ensuring his successful energy dominance agenda translates into the most cost savings possible at the pump for consumers,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement. Rogers said Trump will discuss ways to increase refining capacity, expand energy production across the supply chain and lower prices for consumers. The push comes as affordability, particularly gas prices, looms …

Trump’s plans to lower Iran-war oil prices aren’t working. What could.

Trump’s plans to lower Iran-war oil prices aren’t working. What could.

The Trump administration has rolled out a series of measures to attempt to blunt the blow of the Iran-driven oil-price hike, and yet prices remain stubbornly high. As the war rolls on, it is becoming clear there isn’t much the U.S. or any other government can do to provide relief from higher oil prices short of ending the conflict.  It will take a military breakthrough to get oil flowing and reduce energy prices. That means this episode is sharply different from past market crises that President Donald Trump has muddled through. A pattern of escalating political tensions followed by fast economic relief that has held through Trump’s second presidency may finally be breaking. This is a problem Trump can’t solve through economic policy. The economic math is uncompromising. The war will cut the global supply of oil by about 8 million barrels a day in March, the International Energy Agency estimated Thursday. That accounts for the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway bordered by Iran that carries as much as 20 million …
