Fernando Vergara/AP hide caption toggle caption Fernando Vergara/AP BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Tough-on-crime outsider Aberaldo de la Espriella took the lead in Colombia’s presidential race in the first round of voting Sunday night, setting up a runoff with Iván Cepeda, an ally of Colombia’s outgoing President Gustavo Petro who questioned the results of the election. With no candidate taking an outright majority of the vote, the election will head to a second round in June. But Cepeda and Petro sowed doubt in the results of the first round, claiming without evidence that hundreds of thousands of votes were manipulated and that foreign actors manipulated the results of the election. Cepeda said he was waiting for electoral authorities to scrutinize the results before accepting the election. “Only when the vote-counting commissions have fully clarified what happened will we comment on tonight’s results,” Cepeda said, though he acknowledged the vote was …

Colombia’s Presidential Election Pits Outgoing Leader’s Ally Against Pro-Trump Candidates

BOGOTÁ, Colombia (AP) — Colombians milled into voting stations on Sunday in the first round of the South American nation’s presidential election, choosing between candidates with radically diverging visions for the future of peace in a country haunted by decades of armed conflict. The vote, seen as a referendum on outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s policies, comes 10 years after Colombia signed an historic peace pact with guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. That agreement offered hope to break the nation out of a vicious cycle of fighting between rebel groups and the government but violence has roared back since then, coming to a head in the lead-up to the presidential vote. Criminal groups have increasingly launched drone strikes, armed attacks have plagued the race and last June, 39-year-old politician and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay was fatally shot at a political rally. In a country where the fight for peace has long been a part of the political ethos, the question of how to address the conflict is once again dividing …

The “Machu Picchu” of Colombia’s Jungle : NPR

Sunset casts a warm glow over Colombia’s remote Mavecure Mountains, where three towering rock formations rise above the Amazon jungle. John Otis/NPR hide caption toggle caption John Otis/NPR MAVECURE, Colombia – It’s barely sunup in the Amazon rainforest but the sound of howler monkeys, parrots and frogs serve as nature’s alarm clock. Along with a couple of friends from the U.S., I’m in eastern Colombia, a stone’s throw from Venezuela. All around the landscape is green and pancake-flat to the horizon. Or so it seems. For as we start hiking, we spot three massive rock formations dramatically jutting up some 2,000 feet from the jungle floor. These are the Cerros de Mavecure, or the Mavecure mountains. They consist of three massive buttes of sandstone, shale and quartz that are barren and rounded at the top. They remind me of Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, but there’s nothing sweet about the name. “Mavecure” refers to the poison-dart blowguns used by the Indigenous groups here for hunting. Our guide, Ignacio Rodriguez, says the site is sacred …

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro under investigation in US for drug ties | Donald Trump News

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has been named in two separate criminal investigations led by prosecutors in the United States. The New York Times was the first to report the existence of the two probes on Friday, citing sources familiar with the proceedings. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Media reports indicate that Petro is not personally the target of the investigations, which focus on drug-smuggling in Latin America. But according to the Times, US attorneys in Brooklyn and Manhattan are looking into whether Petro met with drug traffickers and solicited donations from them for his 2022 presidential campaign. Al Jazeera has not independently verified the Times report. By Friday afternoon, Petro had issued a statement denying the claims, which threaten to reopen the rift between the US and Colombia. “In Colombia, there is not a single investigation into my relationship with drug traffickers, for one simple reason: I have never in my life spoken with a drug trafficker,” Petro wrote on the social media platform X. He added that he told campaign managers …
