Palmer Luckey says the coolest thing about Anduril expanding to Long Beach is the fighter jets

Palmer Luckey says the coolest thing about Anduril expanding to Long Beach is the fighter jets

Defense tech company Anduril on Thursday announced its plans to expand its Southern California presence with a major campus in Long Beach, the coastal town where founder Palmer Luckey grew up. The expanded campus will eventually support about 5,500 jobs. Luckey told TechCrunch that these will be new jobs, not transfers from other operations. Anduril’s headquarters is nearby, in Costa Mesa, California, and it also has a massive manufacturing facility in Ohio. The Long Beach campus will span 1.18 million square feet across six buildings, combining office space and industrial areas dedicated to R&D. It is expected to be ready by mid-2027, the company said. Long Beach is “a major aerospace hub right in our backyard,” Luckey told TechCrunch about why the company chose that location. The plan is to hire similar types of employees to those working at headquarters: manufacturing workers, technicians, assembly workers, and engineers across disciplines (electrical, mechanical, aerodynamics), as well as build and test roles, and “a lot of people on the logistics side, because the things that we’re going to …

The coolest audio gear I listened to at CES 2026 (including brain-reading headphones)

The coolest audio gear I listened to at CES 2026 (including brain-reading headphones)

Klipsch debuted the HP-1 headphones at CES 2026, and this model is the company’s closed-back, wireless ANC headphones within its Atlas lineup. The HP-1 feature coaxial drivers, wood finishes, and USB-C audio support. The company hasn’t announced all of the specifics, but the headphones are expected to arrive on the market this summer. Aside from their expected high-quality sound, I was most impressed by the HP-1’s ANC performance, as this is typically an area where hi-fi headphones struggle. I tested the HP-1 in the incredibly busy Las Vegas Convention Center, and the ANC easily subdued the background noise. Source link

CES Live Blog, Day 1: The Coolest Tech We’ve Seen So Far

Photograph: Michael Calore Withings makes some of our favorite fitness tech, from smart scales to fitness trackers. The company is known for its gorgeous, understated hardware (I’m wearing a ScanWatch 2 right now!) and simple, easy-to-use app that incorporates every device in its ever-expanding portfolio. Last night, the company launched its latest fitness device, the Body Scan 2. Withings bills this, not as a smart scale like the previous Body Scan, but as a longevity station that checks for over 60 biomarkers when you get out of the tub in the morning. Among some of the latest biomarkers are a hypertension risk notification, cardiac pumping efficiency via Impedance Cardiography, Ultra-high-frequency Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) to measure metabolic markers, and a new AI model to check for impeding signs of diabetes. To use, you simply stand on the 8 ITO-embedded electrodes on the plate and hold the handle, which has 4 stainless steel electrodes embedded in it. It wasn’t working last night at Unveiled because the Wi-Fi was so fuzzy, so I’m not entirely clear as to …

The smartphone era has brought about an era of convergence when it comes to consumer electronics. Tons of devices we used to rely on—small cameras, calculators, flashlights, music players, etc.—have rolled up into our phones. Entertainment has experienced a similar move toward a small-screen singularity. In 2025, users collectively watched more than 4 billion minutes of TikTok content on their phones every single day. Still, big screens persist. This year’s list includes a pair of new TV technologies built to be enjoyed from feet away, not inches from your face. A pair of clever earbuds use magnetic fluid to let you hear familiar music with a fresh sound. And, while it’s already perhaps too easy to start a podcast, the industry standard microphone has gotten a very useful upgrade that makes high-quality content creation even more accessible. Deep down, we want to be cyborgs. We spend huge chunks of time interacting with technology every day, but the friction created by devices and interfaces persists. This year, we got closer than we have been to tech that truly augments reality. Meta took its smart glasses beyond its beginning as a simple content creation tool. The rest of the innovations run the gamut from a drone that captures aerial images in a new way to a grand platform designed to help AI systems navigate the physical world. Ultimately, all of these devices are designed to help humans do more of the things humans already like to do. That’s the way it should be. Glendale’s coolest gay club is a block-long parkway garden

Glendale’s coolest gay club is a block-long parkway garden

The parkway garden sits on a commercial stretch of Glendale’s Brand Boulevard. It’s a modest patch of native plants, hardly visible from the road. Share via Close extra sharing options But this baby plot is the pride and joy of the tight-knit group of green thumbers who tend to it. They gather there every last Sunday of the month for Club Gay Gardens, a garden club catering to queer Angelenos, to maintain the parkway strip, learn about native gardening and connect with other plant lovers. At Club Gay Gardens’ September gathering, attendees ranged in age and botanical savvy, with some boasting degrees in horticulture and others just happy to lend a hand. After a brief round of introductions — pronouns optional, astrological signs mandatory — they were broken into groups of seed-sorters, pavers, planters and detailers (a euphemism for trash crew). Club regular Juno Stilley sat inside with the seed-sorters, grinding white sage between her fingers. Stilley, who grew up in L.A., attended her first club meeting in 2023 and since then has established her …

These are the 9 coolest dog parks in Southern California — fur real!

These are the 9 coolest dog parks in Southern California — fur real!

A well-designed dog park offers plenty of opportunities for pups and people alike when it comes to exercising, chatting and sniffing. (OK, maybe that last one is just for the pups.) Hang out at a good dog park for a while, and you’ll see plenty of happy pooches getting some much-needed physical activity, along with humans sharing shaded benches and plastic bags. Dog parks aren’t for everyone. Some dogs — just like some people — don’t get along well with others. Some would rather stay home and curl up on the couch. But others thrive in the sun, and love to socialize and make friends. This list is for you social animals, even though some of the parks, especially Fiesta Island in San Diego, are so big, you might have parts of them all to yourself. I stick to the big parks with my own dog, Cleo, who has back issues and cannot run around with other pups. Cleo’s wiggly little walk is part of her charm, but roughhousing is out of the question, so …

6 of the coolest listening bars and experiences in L.A.

6 of the coolest listening bars and experiences in L.A.

On a recent Thursday night in Hollywood, I walked into Grandmaster Recorders, a storied former recording studio — where artists like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers once laid down tracks — now transformed into a rooftop bar and restaurant. After grabbing a drink, I found a seat in the dimmed room, which was filled with more than 100 other music aficionados all there to do one thing: Listen to Frank Ocean’s critically acclaimed album, “Channel Orange,” on vinyl. The hosts played the record over a high fidelity (hi-fi for short) audio system — a term used to describe the high-quality reproduction of sound — that sounded so crisp that it felt like Ocean was singing live in front of us. I’d listened to the album at least 300 times before and have seen Ocean perform live, but I’d never experienced the record in this way before. “I think listening to [music] on your own is amazing,” says Free Oribhabor, founder of the Record Club, an album listening event that he’s …
