Coronation Street’s Sydney Martin responds to criticism about stroke storyline

Coronation Street actor Sydney Martin is currently at the centre of one of the soap’s biggest stories: her character Betsy Swain suffered a stroke due to being strangled during sex by boyfriend Dylan Wilson. While Betsy says it was not rough and consensual, the brief loss of breath led to complications that caused the stroke, and in the eyes of law, what Dylan did is still considered a crime. But while the soap has been praised for shining a light on the dangers of the sexual practice, one element has received criticism, something Sydney responded to. Coronation Street airs major Maria decision concerning Gary’s future

Coronation Street airs major Maria decision concerning Gary’s future

Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) faced a serious dilemma in today’s (23 July) episode of Coronation Street. For months, she battled with the belief that husband Gary Windass (Mikey North) was having an affair with his ex-girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien). During a disastrous dinner party, where she decided to challenge the pair over their ‘infidelity’, a flashback revealed the truth to viewers. Gary had actually been Sarah’s first contact after she’d murdered Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), by hitting him over the head with a pipe and sending him flying off the side of some scaffolding. After being caught up in her crime, Gary needed an alibi. Just hours before, he’d smashed up Theo’s van and threatened him. Maria unknowingly agreed to pretend that they’d spent the night together at the builder’s yard so that the police couldn’t pin the blame on him. However, following Sarah’s arrest and charges being made earlier this week, Maria began to wonder whether there was something more to the story than she was being told. Mikey North as Gary Windass …

Coronation Street airs dilemma for Sarah Platt following arrest

Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) is in quite a predicament in Coronation Street. She’s facing spending the rest of her life behind bars for the murder of Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), a death that could’ve been prevented if she climbed down from the scaffolding that he was atop of, and hadn’t listened to the vile comments that he was making about her and his husband Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce). Instead, enraged and infuriated with the justice system, Sarah clobbered him around the head with a metal pipe and sent him flying over the edge. Terrified about the consequences that would undoubtedly follow, she summoned ex-boyfriend Gary Windass (Mikey North) to the scene of the crime in the hope he could help. The pair have been keeping the secret under their hats for months, something which infuriated Sarah’s copper boyfriend Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) when he found out. You’d have thought his biggest issue would be the fact his girlfriend was a killer, but no – Kit wished that he was the one she’d have called in …

Coronation Street to air emotional scenes this week as Betsy Swain and Dylan Wilson finally meet face-to-face

This week, Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) and Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) will finally come face-to-face once more in Coronation Street. Last week, Betsy suffered two strokes in the ITV soap as part of a wider storyline that will explore the devastating, life-altering reality of a non-fatal strangulation on the character, which happened as part of consensual sex between Betsy and Dylan, with both parties believing that the pressure applied was minimal. Events escalated, however, when, against Betsy’s wishes, her mum, DS Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicki Myers), reported Dylan for assaulting her daughter to the police, and he is coming under a lot of suspicion and criticism. Later, Dylan went on to theorise that Betsy had cheated on him with Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) and suggested he was the cause of her medical condition. Dylan Wilson finally visits Betsy Swain in Coronation Street. Throughout, a struggling Betsy maintained she wanted to see Dylan and did not want the police involved, but her other loved ones were sure to keep Dylan away. Now, this week, a furious Brody …
