Trump’s DoorDash Grandma isn’t a plant — the truth is much darker

Trump’s DoorDash Grandma isn’t a plant — the truth is much darker

Despite the myriad political failures of his second term, Donald Trump still has an annoying skill. His reality TV-style antics create the illusion that he’s relatable, even though, having grown up with unimaginable wealth, he’s probably never performed basic everyday tasks like grocery shopping, filling a gas tank or DoorDashing an order from McDonald’s. On Monday the president emerged from the Oval Office to receive two bags of his beloved cheeseburgers and French fries from Sharon Simmons of Arkansas, a 58-year-old who quickly became known as “DoorDash Grandma.” The staged photo-op was meant to showcase Trump’s near-meaningless “no taxes on tips” policy. But White House reporters, clearly starved for a break from the stress of covering the administration’s non-stop scandals, lapped up the opportunity for a feel-good story. As Parker Molloy detailed in her Present Age newsletter, the press played along with the stunt, pretending in headlines — and sometimes in the stories themselves — that Simmons actually drove in from Arkansas to deliver food, ignoring that she’s an anti-tax activist who has previously played …

Smirking man told police ‘I’ve done something silly’ but the truth was much darker

A gambling addict taxi driver was filmed smirking at a bookies shortly after murdering one of his two elderly victims. Andrew Flood, from Southport, murdered Margaret Biddolph, 78, and Anne Leyland, 88, who also lived in the seaside town during a devastating four days of violence, which also included the robbery of another elderly woman. All of his targets were previous customers who he drove during his stint as a taxi driver for Southport-based All Whites Taxis. Dad-of-four Flood was being chased for money by credit companies, bailiffs and his landlord when he strangled Ms Leyland on February 20, 2012. Flood was seen on camera smiling outside the bookies’ shop after Ms Leyland on the day of the murder. His car was later seen a mile away from Ms Biddolph’s home. It is believed he killed her on the same day. Flood sobbed when he entered guilty pleas to two counts of murder and a single count of robbery for the “unspeakably wicked crimes”. As part of a weekly series about Merseyside’s criminal history, the …

If you find that idea at all disconcerting or mawkish, then don’t dream of setting foot in the heavily moralistic, intensely sentimental world of film-turned-play Shadowlands. It opens with a gown-clad Lewis sermonising that real life is a shadowy land compared with the golden rewards after. Then, it shows him testing his faith to its limits, when his late-blooming love affair takes a tragic turn. Television’s favourite nicely brought up Englishman Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) brings plenty of affable charm to this devout, emotionally repressed character, but neither this sanitised production nor his unstintingly …

Popular lyrics keep getting darker and dumber, but there was a surprising shift during the first Trump presidency

Popular lyrics keep getting darker and dumber, but there was a surprising shift during the first Trump presidency

A new analysis of popular music from the last half-century reveals that while the lyrics of chart-topping American songs have generally become angrier and simpler over time, this trend shifts unexpectedly during major societal crises. The findings suggest that during events like the COVID-19 pandemic, listeners may seek out songs that offer an emotional escape rather than those that mirror their anxieties. This research was published in Scientific Reports. Art has historically been viewed as a reflection of the society that creates it. Philosophers and scientists alike argue that cultural artifacts can reveal collective psychological states that are difficult to measure through individual surveys alone. Music is particularly suited for this type of historical analysis because it is widely consumed and contains explicit emotional messages within its lyrics. The consumption of music provides a unique window into the emotional needs of the population at a specific moment in time. Markus Foramitti and Maurício Martins led the research team at the University of Vienna. They collaborated with Urs Markus Nater and Claus Lamm. The team sought …

Large parts of the world’s oceans are growing darker, study finds

Scientists at the University of Plymouth and Plymouth Marine Laboratory found evidence that large portions of the world’s oceans are darkening, and the sunlit zone, vital for marine organisms, is decreasing in size. Data collected over the past two decades shows that one-fifth of the global ocean has been affected by this phenomenon. The research team conducted a global analysis from 2003 to 2022, determining the amount of light that penetrates the ocean’s surface. Researchers believe the change is indicative of a substantial environmental shift, which will impact fish migration patterns and the ocean’s ability to help mitigate climate change. Their findings indicate that the blue water zone to the east of Indonesia has been darkened, while other regions have also experienced significant loss of light in deeper layers, including the Northern Pacific Ocean, Northern Indian Ocean, and Southern Ocean. The researchers used long-term data from satellite images to quantify the changes occurring in the photic zone, which is the upper layer of the ocean where sunlight and moonlight penetrate deeply enough to stimulate living …
