DRC’s Ebola outbreak began months before it was officially declared, says WHO | Ebola News

Earlier cases of the disease were wrongly attributed to malaria and typhoid, WHO said. Published On 10 Aug 202610 Aug 2026 The fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record started in February, months before it was officially declared in mid-May, said the World Health Organization (WHO) as responders in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) battle the surge in cases. Mohamed Janabi, the WHO’s regional director for Africa, told a news conference on Monday that sequencing indicated the outbreak’s start, with some cases early on wrongly attributed to malaria and typhoid. Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list “So we are chasing the virus, the virus is ahead of us,” Janabi said. Confirmed cases of Ebola in the DRC have reached 4,200, including at least 1,900 deaths, according to latest government figures. The Ebola outbreak declared on May 15 is unlike most previous ones because the rare Bundibugyo virus has no approved vaccines or treatments. Early testing was conducted for the more common type of Ebola, contributing to delays. The outbreak is unfolding in challenging conditions, …

Major incident declared as two huge fires rip through UK woodland | UK | News

A fire service has declared a major incident as two large fires in woodland areas have put a strain on resources amid hot and dry weather conditions. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident at 1.30pm on Sunday while 14 crews tackle two separate fires near Mansfield. A fire broke out at Strawberry Hill Heath at about 2pm on Saturday, with 12 crews tackling the blaze at its height, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said. Eight fire engines remain at the site, while six others and a water carrier have been deployed to tackle a second blaze that broke out at Sherwood Pines on Sunday. The fire service said in a statement: “As of 1.30 pm, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident. This relates to the cumulative impact of multiple incidents placing significant pressure on operational resources, rather than a single incident in isolation. The service is currently operating with very limited resources and reduced pump availability. “As a result, response times to any further incidents are likely to …

The first official drought conditions, however, have been announced in another part of the UK. Here’s where has been affected, why, and how it might actually affect you: Where has drought been declared in the UK?  As of the time of writing (Friday 24 July), drought has been declared in parts of Wales, including:  north Wales, the Upper Severn.  These areas have received less than 2% of expected rainfall so far this month. In fact, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) says, parts of North Wales have gone without significant rain since 6 July. Many parts of England and Wales are in the “prolonged dry weather” category – one level below drought. Why was drought declared?  There are no official drought criteria in the UK. But …

Drought declared in parts of Wales as July on course to be driest in nearly 200 years | Wales

Drought declared in parts of Wales as July on course to be driest in nearly 200 years | Wales

Parts of Wales are now in drought and all other areas of the country are experiencing prolonged dry conditions, with this month on course to be the driest on record for nearly 200 years. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said on Thursday that record-low river flows, back-to-back heatwaves and widespread wildfires have prompted the declaration of drought status in north Wales and the Upper Severn. As of Thursday, several fires were still burning across the country after more than a week, leading the Welsh government to activate “crisis” plans amid concerns over a lack of firefighting helicopters. The declaration of drought in Wales comes as a new scientific analysis finds that extreme heat, supercharged by the human-caused climate crisis, is sucking Europe dry in summer and intensifying the drought hitting the continent. Deadly wildfires have raged through Spain and France, and rivers are running low across Europe. On Monday, the National Drought Group – the members of which include the Met Office, the National Farmers’ Union, water companies and expert bodies – declared parts of southern, …

The Great Normalization (Nobody Declared Martial Law… Yet America Began Looking Like It Anyway)

The Great Normalization (Nobody Declared Martial Law… Yet America Began Looking Like It Anyway)

Authored by Madge Waggy, There are stories that announce themselves with explosions, riots, or breaking-news headlines, and then there are stories so subtle that they quietly rewrite an entire society before anyone realizes what has happened. This is one of those stories. During the preparation of this investigation, several retired police officers, private security professionals, emergency responders, and ordinary citizens described nearly identical experiences despite living hundreds or even thousands of miles apart. None believed they were witnessing anything extraordinary at first. It was only when they looked backward—sometimes over a decade—that a disturbing pattern became impossible to ignore. Streets had not become military checkpoints overnight. Neighborhoods had not suddenly filled with surveillance towers. Instead, the changes arrived one camera, one drone, one security contract, and one “temporary” emergency measure at a time until extraordinary security became indistinguishable from ordinary life. What follows is not an argument against public safety, nor an attempt to romanticize a past that was hardly free from crime or violence. It is an examination of a transformation that has occurred …
