What Do People Who Are Conscious But Lack a Cortex Demonstrate?

Hydranencephaly means that the two brain spheres are largely absent. It is not to be confused with hydrocephalus, which just means water on the brain. Recently, neurosurgeon Michael Egnor and I have been looking at the claims made in an article in Popular Mechanics in connection with our book, The Immortal Mind: (2025). The many misconceptions the PM article introduced have provided us with an opportunity to discuss some topics at greater length than we could do in the book. One of these topics is people who are born without a cortex. From the PM article: He also talks about near-death experiences, current theories of consciousness, and the concept of hydranencephaly, a rare condition where a patient is missing large parts of their cerebral cortex. That this condition exists disproves all current theories of consciousness, says Egnor in our interview, because they all maintain it originates in the cortex. There have only been a few documented cases of hydranencephaly in the literature. Steven Novella, a Yale School of Medicine neuroscientist, and Newsome both stressed that …

A True Story To Demonstrate The Danger of ‘Cracks’ in Your Life – OpentheWord.org

Citadel of Sardis Credit: Volker Höhfeld, Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0 By Rick Renner Here is an incredible story from history that demonstrates the danger of “cracks” in your spiritual life. The story comes from the city of Sardis, where one of the seven churches in the book of Revelation was located (see Revelation 3:1-6). The city of Sardis was located very high on top of sheer cliffs that were almost impossible to climb. Because of their city’s high and remote location, the residents believed it couldn’t be penetrated or taken captive by a foreign enemy. It was this overconfidence that led to the demise of Sardis on more than one occasion. Because those who lived in Sardis believed they were impenetrable, they felt sure that foreign aggressors couldn’t make war on them. As a result, they became proud, cocky, overconfident, lazy, and complacent. As this apathy took over, the residents smugly concluded that there was no other city as secure as theirs. As a result of this haughty attitude, they stopped giving attention to the foundations …

Scientists demonstrate how reliable news sources are weaponized to spread falsehoods

A new study suggests that online misinformation is not limited to fabricated stories from unreliable websites but also includes factual reports from mainstream media that are repurposed to support false claims. Researchers found that social media users who frequently share fake news also share specific articles from reputable news outlets that contain narratives common in misinformation. The findings indicate that bad actors may strategically select true information to lend credibility to misleading arguments. The study was published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour. Social scientists and media researchers have traditionally struggled to quantify the spread of falsehoods online. The standard approach involves identifying specific websites or domains known for publishing fabricated content and tracking how often links to those sites appear on social networks. This method assumes a clear division where “fake” news comes from bad sources and “real” news comes from good sources. However, this source-based binary fails to capture the nuance of how information actually circulates. A factual story from a reliable outlet can be taken out of context to imply something untrue. …
