Umoja Art Gallery Staff Denied Visas to Basel for Art Fair

Umoja Art Gallery Staff Denied Visas to Basel for Art Fair

Arts workers affiliated with Umoja Art Gallery, based in Kampala, Uganda, were denied Swiss entry visas the week before the Africa Basel art fair opened on June 17. The Art Newspaper reported the news, noting that the gallery’s empty booth featured a sign explaining that the gallery’s “participation remains impossible due to the denial of visas.” The booth is currently devoid of artworks, which are in the process of being shipped to Basel: “An empty booth stands as a reminder that despite the ambition of a global art ecosystem, physical borders and administrative barriers still determine whose voices can be present,” the sign reads. Related Articles Africa Basel’s inaugural fair was last year, coinciding with Art Basel’s flagship annual fair in Switzerland. Africa Basel includes 19 international galleries (one more than last year’s) that promote work by African and African diaspora artists. Umoja Art Gallery was founded in 2011 and represents over two dozen emerging and established artists. Since 2025, the gallery has also supported a residency program. Attorneys urge release of mosque leader, saying he’s been denied diabetes care in ICE custody

Attorneys urge release of mosque leader, saying he’s been denied diabetes care in ICE custody

Attorneys for the president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque say he is being denied basic medical care for diabetes and has lost 30 pounds (14 kilograms) in the two months since he was detained by immigration officers. Salah Sarsour, a Palestinian-born legal permanent resident of the United States, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in April. His attorneys say he is being detained on baseless claims that he is a foreign policy threat, but they believe he was actually targeted for speaking out against Israel and for a conviction as a minor by Israeli military courts. He has no criminal record in the U.S., where he has lived for more than 30 years. Sarsour has Type 2 diabetes and his blood sugar levels aren’t being consistently checked, putting him at risk of organ failure or death if left untreated, his attorneys told a federal judge on Monday. Sarsour is being held in an Indiana county jail while his immigration case is pending. “We had the opportunity to make a direct, urgent …

Google and Meta denied new trial in youth social media addiction case

Google and Meta denied new trial in youth social media addiction case

June 10 : A California state court judge has denied motions by Meta Platforms and Google’s YouTube seeking a new trial after a jury found the companies liable for designing social media platforms that are harmful to young people. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carolyn Kuhl ruled on the motions on Tuesday, according to court documents. The companies had sought a new trial in a lawsuit filed by a woman who said she became addicted to Google’s YouTube and Meta’s Instagram at a young age because of their attention-grabbing design. A jury found the companies negligent and imposed $6 million in damages.  Kuhl rejected the companies’ argument that they are shielded from the claims by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a federal law that generally protects online platforms from liability over user-generated content. Kuhl said the law does not address the companies’ design choices and the jury was repeatedly instructed not to consider content. “There was substantial evidence that Plaintiff was harmed by the design features of Instagram, regardless of any of the content found …

Texas Tech’s Appeal to NCAA for Sorsby Reinstatement Denied, According to AP Source

Texas Tech’s Appeal to NCAA for Sorsby Reinstatement Denied, According to AP Source

Texas Tech’s appeal to the NCAA to have Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility reinstated has been denied, in a ruling that is separate from the transfer quarterback’s lawsuit against that same governing body. A person with knowledge of the NCAA’s decision told The Associated Press on Friday night that the NCAA for the second time denied Texas Tech’s petition to restore the quarterback’s eligibility. He was ruled ineligible after he acknowledged gambling on sports, including on his own team while at Indiana. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to the AP because there was no announcement about the appeal decision from either the NCAA or the quarterback’s current school. That came while the NCAA and Sorsby were still waiting for a ruling from a Texas judge after the quarterback filed a lawsuit May 18 seeking a temporary injunction against the NCAA in hopes of playing this season for the Red Raiders after transferring from Cincinnati. A two-hour hearing was held Monday in the 99th District Court in Lubbock County, where Texas Tech is located. As of …

When drug after drug failed, a teen hoped brain surgery could fix her daily seizures. Insurance denied it.

Several weeks later, the insurer went one step further, announcing a change in policy to include deep brain stimulation for certain conditions in children and adolescents. “We are constantly reviewing our medical coverage policies to keep pace with the latest treatment standards and expert recommendations,” it said in a statement. “After reviewing new clinical information, we have updated our deep brain stimulation coverage policy to include pediatric and adolescent patients in the treatment of epilepsy, OCD and dystonia when all other clinical criteria are met.” The change is “great news,” said Cambrie’s doctor, Guerriero. “Changes like this are an important step in improving access to care,” Marupudi wrote in an email. “I’m encouraged to see growing recognition of deep brain stimulation as a treatment option for carefully selected children with severe, treatment-resistant epilepsy,” she wrote. “For some patients who have exhausted other therapies, DBS can make a meaningful difference in seizure burden and overall quality of life.” Cambrie’s surgery is scheduled for June, and she is looking forward to a future with hopefully fewer seizures. …
