News diary 2-8 February: Alphabet financial results, Winter Olympics, NFL Super Bowl

Picture: Shutterstock/kovop This week features a wave of financial results to be released from major multinational and media companies, including Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, the New York Times and News Corp, the owner of The Sun and The Times. It’s also a big week in sport: the Winter Olympics begin in Milan on Friday, followed on Saturday by cricket’s T20 World Cup and rugby’s Six Nations. The week then closes with the Super Bowl, the NFL’s annual championship game in the US, as the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots. One to watch out for: the Government is due to publish its National Cancer Plan this week. While a firm date hasn’t been announced yet, the government has in the past used World Cancer Day (4 February) to promote cancer-related policy announcements. In sporting news, the men’s and women’s final of the Australian Open will be held on Friday and Saturday respectively. And the spotlight shifts to music on Sunday as the Grammys celebrate the biggest achievements of the past year. Meanwhile, one story set to dominate headlines during the week is Keir Starmer’s anticipated travel to China, which comes after the government’s approval of the country’s mega-embassy in London and with the prime minister’s approach to international security under intense scrutiny. Downing Street hasn’t announced dates yet, but reporting suggests Starmer is expected in Beijing and Shanghai from 29-31 January. A trip to Japan is expected to follow over the weekend. Proceedings begin on Monday, and Prince Harry is expected to give evidence in person on Thursday. In Paris for the women’s spring/summer 2026 collections, freedom was felt. It was important for me to attend this season because getting to experience the shows and see the clothes in real life helps me understand the energy these collections carry. This season, creative directors let go of constraints and allowed for fun to take over. From Dario Vitale of Versace’s use of bold colors, embracing a completely new direction for the house. To Dior and Jonathan Anderson’s exploration of the past, present and future and the way he always incorporates quirky details in his accessories. Or Matthieu Blazy’s debut at Chanel, which introduced a new language while paying homage to the house’s foundation. We are living in violent times with so much censorship around storytelling that it’s vital to have a medium like this dedicated to expression and beauty. This season felt like a celebration because of the surge of new creative directors and new ideas, and we’ve needed this newness for a long time. These collections spoke to me in a way that …
