European leaders discuss role at Munich Summit

It is the third and final day of the Munich Security Conference, the annual gathering of political leaders, military officials and security experts, after the first two days largely focused outward on Europe’s relationships, notably the European Union’s ties with the United States and Russia’s war against Ukraine, while Sunday’s agenda turns inward to examine the bloc’s own role and influence, as our correspondent Nick Holdsworth reports from the conference. Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonca Filho discuss The Secret Agent – right after a call from Brazil’s president | Ents & Arts News

Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonca Filho, star and director of political thriller The Secret Agent, have been delayed, slightly, I’m told. A few minutes turn into quite a few more minutes, which is not usually a promising sign when it comes to interviewing film stars and filmmakers, but it turns out there’s a good reason – an unexpected phone call from the president of Brazil. Not the kind of caller you send to voicemail. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known as Lula, wanted to congratulate them on the film’s success: a string of honours starting with major wins at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, which now includes a Critics Choice award, Golden Globe wins for best actor and best non-English language film, plus two BAFTA and four Oscar nominations. Qatar Emir, Trump Discuss De-Escalation as US, Iran Pursue Diplomacy

Feb 11 (Reuters) – Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed efforts for regional de-escalation and stability in a phone call, the Emiri ‌Diwan said on Wednesday, ‌as Washington and Tehran pursue diplomatic solutions to Iran’s nuclear program. The call comes ahead of a meeting between Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu where the Israeli prime minister is expected to press him to widen U.S. talks with Iran to include curbs on Tehran’s missile arsenal and other security threats beyond its nuclear programme. Qatar has been engaging in diplomatic efforts with regional allies to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran to avert the threat of a military confrontation between the longtime adversaries. Ali Larijani, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, arrived in Qatar on Wednesday and was expected to meet with the emir, as Washington and Tehran prepare to resume negotiations. The two countries held indirect talks in Oman last week, which a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said had allowed Tehran to gauge Washington’s seriousness and showed …

Netanyahu expected to meet Trump in US to discuss Iran

Netanyahu expected to meet Trump in US to discuss Iran

PRIME MINISTER SEEKS MISSILE CURBS “The Prime Minister believes any negotiations must include limitations on ballistic missiles and a halting of the support for the Iranian axis,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. Wednesday’s meeting would be the seventh between Netanyahu and Trump since the US president returned to office in January last year. The pair had been expected to meet on Feb 18, but the talks were brought forward amid the renewed engagement with Iran. A spokesperson for Netanyahu did not immediately comment on why the date was moved up. Last June, the US joined an Israeli military campaign against Iran’s uranium enrichment and other nuclear installations, marking the most direct American military action ever against the Islamic Republic. Iran retaliated by launching a missile attack on a US base in Qatar. The US and Israel have repeatedly warned Iran that they would strike again if Tehran pressed ahead with its enrichment and ballistic missile programmes. World powers and regional states fear that a breakdown in the negotiations would ignite another conflict between the …

‘Miracle on Ice’ players discuss political climate heading into Winter Olympics

‘Miracle on Ice’ players discuss political climate heading into Winter Olympics

The “Miracle” players have been keeping up with the news. Russia is viewed as an adversary by many today, but for different reasons. On the war in Ukraine, Eruzione said, “How many thousands and thousands of people are being killed for no reason at all whatsoever. It’s pretty frustrating to see something like that go on in the world. Forget sports.” McClanahan and Schneider are from Minnesota and still live in the state. They have followed recent events there, the violent clashes between federal agents and protesters. “All I’ll say is, people just have to regain some common sense, and you have to start respecting one another,” McClanahan said. “Regardless of where your views are from. It’s a matter of having respect.” “And treat people how you’d like to be treated,” Schneider added. Eruzione reminisced about 1980, when the “Miracle” team made people “proud to wave the flag … proud of our country.” “If you did a background check, we all came from hard, working-class families,” Eruzione continued. “We were the kid next door. Next …

MARKO DJURICA/REUTERS While President Donald Trump adopted a softer tone at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22, regarding his ambitions on Greenland, technical talks began so that an “agreement” could be reached with Denmark and NATO allies to bring his plans to fruition. Trump’s goal is mainly to open new “military access [points]” with “total access” on the Inuit island, he told Fox News on Thursday. A “framework” document was drafted and presented to the allies on Thursday. Ambassadors from NATO member countries were briefed soon after, according to a source in the organization. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, meanwhile, spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Friday to present her with the available options. Trump said he expected a response from these discussions within two weeks. At this stage, it remains unclear how these discussions fit within the existing legal framework, in place since World War II and …

Trump expands policy banning aid to groups that discuss abortion : NPR

A 19-year-old woman talks with nurse Valeria Zafisoa at a traveling contraception clinic in eastern Madagascar run by the British nonprofit group MSI Reproductive Choices. That group lost $15 million in funding the last time Trump enforced the Mexico City policy. Samantha Reinders for NPR hide caption toggle caption Samantha Reinders for NPR For over four decades, Republican presidents have banned U.S. funds from going to groups that provide or promote abortion — and Democratic presidents have reversed the ban. On Friday at the March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., Vice President JD Vance announced a major expansion of the policy. The Mexico City policy, named for where it was first unveiled, will now also bar funding to groups that promote “gender ideology” and diversity, equity and inclusion. “We believe that every country in the world has the duty to protect life,” said Vance. “We’re expanding this policy to protect life, to combat DEI and the radical gender ideologies that prey on our children.” The administration is also expanding the policy beyond non-governmental charitable …

“It’s Going To Get Really Serious”: Liberal Influencers Discuss Public Trials, Court Expansion After Democratic Takeover

“It’s Going To Get Really Serious”: Liberal Influencers Discuss Public Trials, Court Expansion After Democratic Takeover

Authored by Jonathan Turley, Former CNN correspondent Jim Acosta spoke with popular podcaster Jennifer Welch, discussing the plans for radical changes after a Democratic takeover this year. Like many Democratic figures, they said that the expansion of the Supreme Court is obvious. The expansion is essential to clear away any restraints on a radical agenda that will include the trial of a host of conservatives, from Trump to the young former DOGE employee who was injured when he came to the rescue of a woman in a carjacking in Washington, D.C. What was most notable in the interview was the priority of expanding the Supreme Court.  Figures like Eric Holder have expressly stated that packing the Supreme Court with a liberal majority will be the priority after any Democratic takeover. This has long been the plan among far-left figures, but it is now being embraced by establishment figures as essential to securing a radical agenda to achieve lasting power. Years ago, Harvard professor Michael Klarman laid out a radical agenda to change the system to guarantee …
