Mbappé draws fire from right wing in France, Spain over Ceuta t-shirt controversy

Mbappé draws fire from right wing in France, Spain over Ceuta t-shirt controversy

Kylian Mbappé has come under mounting criticism from conservative and far-right politicians in Spain and France after the Real Madrid forward declined to fully wear a t-shirt supporting residents of Ceuta, Spain’s north African exclave grappling with a migration crisis. Immigration has emerged as one of Spain’s dominant political issues in recent months following July’s influx to Ceuta, and the debate has increasingly spilled into football ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections. The dispute erupted before Real Madrid’s La Liga match on Tuesday when Mbappé, alongside Vinicius Junior and fellow Frenchman Ibrahima Konaté, partially rolled up t-shirts bearing the words “We are all Ceutans”, which was intended to be a message of support for people in the Spanish territory bordering Morocco. Images of the three players quickly spread on social media and prompted political reactions in Madrid. A spokesperson for the mainstream conservative Popular Party (PP) said she felt “deep shame” over the incident, while a lawmaker from the far-right Vox party said Spaniards were “perfectly free to feel outraged by three millionaires who live …

Messi Scores His 19th MLS Goal as Inter Miami Draws 2-2 With Nashville

MIAMI (AP) — Lionel Messi scored his MLS-leading 19th goal of the season as Inter Miami played first-place Nashville to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night. Messi appeared to have Miami on its way to its first win over Nashville this season when he scored with a left-footed shot to make it 2-1 in the 62nd. Nashville’s Sam Surridge equalized with his second goal of the night just a minute into stoppage time to keep his club unbeaten in four meetings with Miami this season. The draw also kept Nashville nine points ahead of second-place Miami in the Eastern Conference standings. Nashville struck just four minutes into the match when Surridge finished Andy Najar’s pass for his 14th goal of the season. The score was evened in the 19th when Nashville defender Reed Baker-Whiting scored an own goal on a corner kick. Messi had a shot blocked from outside the box in the 27th minute and sent a free kick wide shortly afterward before breaking through in the second half. Rodrigo De Paul found Messi …

Miley Cyrus Draws 1.5 Million for Hollywood Bowl Concert Tickets

Miley Cyrus Draws 1.5 Million for Hollywood Bowl Concert Tickets

Miley Cyrus‘ upcoming pair of Hollywood Bowl shows has some of the most sought after tickets in live music landscape, as the pop superstar has drawn 1.5 million people to her pre-sale queues, show organizers said Wednesday. For reference, the historic Hollywood venue seats about 18,000 people, reflecting an overwhelming number of people looking to score tickets for Cyrus’ shows. It’s an impressive feat, though not necessarily surprising given that Cyrus hasn’t played a proper concert tour in over a decade, with the exception of a brief 11-date festival tour in 2021 and 2022. Cyrus is playing two shows in October in support of her upcoming 10th album, Bass Persuades, set for release next week. Bass Persuades will mark her debut with WMG’s Atlantic Records after she’d spent most of her career under the Sony Music umbrella, most recently at Columbia Records. The album comes at a period of significant change for Cyrus. Her godmother Dolly Parton died after a brief battle with cancer in August, and Cyrus posted an emotional tribute to the icon …

Abandoned Mulholland Drive home draws neighbors’ ire, safety concerns

Abandoned Mulholland Drive home draws neighbors’ ire, safety concerns

Ted Costas felt weird putting a lock and chain on a neighbor’s gate, but he didn’t have a lot of other options. For weeks, people had been gathering at the abandoned property on Mulholland Drive overlooking a canyon right below the Universal City Overlook. It was July 4, and Costas was afraid that the people who were regularly gathering at the house might start a fire. Two days later, the lock was gone, Costas said. The property enjoys some stunning views of the San Fernando Valley and the mountains beyond. But for everyone else in the Studio City neighborhood with a view of the house, it is an eyesore and a hazard. “It drives me nuts,” said Kris Henigman, who lives downhill from the abandoned property and sees it every day when walking in the neighborhood. The house is hard to miss. Standing on stilts near the top of the canyon, it is surrounded by brush and dirt on either side and is more than 200 feet from the nearest house north of Mulholland. Victim’s Family Demands Justice as Indigent Claim Draws Scrutiny

Victim’s Family Demands Justice as Indigent Claim Draws Scrutiny

The family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez, the teenager whom singer D4vd is accused of sexually abusing and murdering before mutilating her body last year, is calling for justice as their attorney disputes the artist’s claim of indigence in a Los Angeles courtroom this week — a claim used to justify swapping his high-powered legal team for a public defender. “We, as a family, only want justice for Celeste and for whoever is responsible to face the full force of the law. And we thank everyone for supporting our daughter in every way,” the Rivas Hernandez family said in a statement Monday afternoon, following the latest hearing in the case against the singer, whose real name is David Anthony Burke. Earlier Monday, Burke stunned the courtroom during a pretrial hearing when it was announced he was firing his legal team and switching to a public defender. The move, attorneys said, was because the rising star — who once opened for SZA — qualifies as indigent, a claim now being heavily contested. Burke has swapped attorneys Blair …

Inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Festival Draws Massive Crowd: Highlights

Inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Festival Draws Massive Crowd: Highlights

The sweltering Southern California heat couldn’t stop the swarm of music-loving fans from descending upon Irvine’s Great Park Saturday for the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields music festival. The Olivia Rodrigo-created all-women festival brought in 45,000 people, according to the singer before her headlining set. Proceeds from the event went towards women- and girls-centric organizations. The festival was spread across the sports complex. Rows of food stalls and trucks filled the field, along with pop-up activations from brands and sponsors. The park’s balloon was decked out for Daisy Chain Fields and the carousel was running throughout the day. Booths and stalls had special flower key symbols for any women-owned businesses — of which there were many. Flowers were everywhere on the festival grounds. Attendees likely wouldn’t be able to tell, minus a hiccup here or there, that it was the singer’s first edition of the festival, as logistics were relatively smooth. The heat, sitting in the 90s range, was at times brutal with little respite, but the festival provided hydration stations throughout the festival grounds. Fans of …

FDA Clears First Robot That Draws Blood On Its Own

FDA Clears First Robot That Draws Blood On Its Own

By Ellyn Vohnoutka HealthDay ReporterFRIDAY, Aug. 21, 2026 (HealthDay News) — The next time you roll up your sleeve for a blood test, the hand holding the needle may not be a hand at all. Federal regulators have authorized the first robot capable of drawing blood from a patient’s arm on its own, with no one guiding the needle. The device is called Aletta. It is cleared for use in adults at outpatient clinics — the walk-in sites where most routine blood work is done — the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Wednesday. A phlebotomist, the trained professional who typically draws your blood, still has to start each session and stay nearby in case something goes wrong. But a single phlebotomist can oversee up to three of the machines at once. That is the point, regulators said. Clinics across the country are short on trained blood-draw staff, and patients are waiting longer as a result. “Blood draws are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the United States, yet patients may …

Florida 19th District race draws candidates from other states : NPR

John Strand speaks during an event at the U.S. Capitol on June 13, 2023. A convicted and pardoned Jan. 6 rioter, Strand is now running for the Republican nomination in Florida’s 19th Congressional District. Amanda Andrade-Rhoades/AP hide caption toggle caption Amanda Andrade-Rhoades/AP FORT MYERS, Fla. — The race to replace Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, who’s running for governor, has drawn a unique cast of characters. The cast includes former members of Congress and pardon recipients from President Trump. And many of them have only recent ties to the district, which includes parts of Cape Coral, Naples and Fort Myers, and the state. One of the candidates running for this southwest Florida U.S. House seat is John Strand, a former model and actor, and a convicted and pardoned Jan. 6 rioter, who grew up in Beverly Hills, Calif. But Strand is not the only candidate running for the strongly Republican 19th Congressional District without deep roots in Florida. In this crowded GOP primary, where almost all 10 candidates are Trump loyalists, a tension has developed between …

Bill Maher Draws The Line: American Values Are Not Negotiable

Bill Maher Draws The Line: American Values Are Not Negotiable

Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity News, Even Bill Maher has finally had enough. The longtime left-leaning comedian used his HBO platform to deliver a blunt message that cuts through years of open-borders ideology: if you want the American dream, you take American values with it. No exceptions. No special pleading. And no, it’s not “racist” to say so. On a recent episode of Real Time, Maher laid out a straightforward standard that should never have become controversial. Immigrants are not free to reject the foundation of the country they chose to enter. “If you want the American dream, you have to take the American values,” he said. “But you have to answer one question: Do you like Western civilization? Because that’s what we are. And that’s not negotiable.” ? BILL MAHER: THE AMERICAN DREAM COMES WITH AMERICAN VALUES Maher says immigrants are welcome to bring their food, language, religion and traditions — but America’s fundamental values aren’t up for negotiation. “If you want the American dream, you have to take the American… pic.twitter.com/bt9jopmFur — …
