Real Madrid turn to Mourinho again in bid to end trophy drought with 3-year contract

Real Madrid appointed Jose Mourinho as their coach on Thursday on a three-year deal, with the Portuguese veteran making a sensational return to the Spanish capital after 13 years away. The 63-year-old replaces Alvaro Arbeloa after Madrid finished a second consecutive season without a major trophy, falling behind domestic rivals Barcelona. “(Real Madrid have) agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029,” said the 15-time European champions in a statement. “Jose Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins.” One of football’s most successful yet divisive managers, Mourinho arrives from Benfica, where the Lisbon club completed an unbeaten league campaign but finished third. Benfica said Wednesday Real Madrid were paying €15 million ($17.25m) for the Portuguese coach. Hoover Dam, challenged by drought, now wears a massive U.S. flag

Hoover Dam, challenged by drought, now wears a massive U.S. flag

Nope, it’s not AI. It’s just a really big flag with bright lights, draped on Hoover Dam for the next several weeks. As a display to mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, the states of Nevada and Arizona and the federal Bureau of Reclamation teamed up to hang and illuminate an enormous American flag on the dam on Memorial Day. The display, scheduled to be in place through July 4, is visible to anyone crossing between Arizona and Nevada on U.S. Route 93, which goes across the top of the dam. The flag is 150 feet tall and 300 feet long, spread on the south-facing side of the dam and lit by 550 LED lights (powered by dam-generated electricity). (Michael Bittle) It’s a spectacle that comes at a challenging moment for Hoover Dam, as experts warn that Lake Mead’s dwindling water levels could threaten the dam’s ability to generate hydropower. “Slap a flag on it, that’ll fix it,” suggested one of several Reddit …

Critics Oppose Wyoming Hydroelectric Project, Pointing to Climate-Driven Drought Crisis

Critics Oppose Wyoming Hydroelectric Project, Pointing to Climate-Driven Drought Crisis

A proposed pumped-water electricity storage facility at Seminoe Reservoir could decimate the prized Miracle Mile trout fishery on the North Platte River and jeopardize a bighorn sheep herd that wildlife officials rely on to support the species’ populations in other areas, critics of the $4 billion project say. Anglers, business owners and wildlife biologists joined state and federal regulatory officials Thursday to testify before the Legislature’s Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee. They cautioned that a primary federal permitting review — by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission — is too lax on “acceptable” impacts and riddled with inaccurate assumptions fed to it by project developer rPlus Hydro. “These concerns are not theoretical for us,” Casper Mayor Ray Pacheco told the legislative panel. “Casper relies directly on the North Platte River for drinking water, wastewater treatment, recreation, tourism and the quality of life.” The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s concerns regarding impacts to the Ferris-Seminoe bighorn sheep herd, mostly due to blasting and industrial traffic during the project’s five-year construction period, “may be unresolvable,” one …

Montpellier lift Challenge Cup as routed Ulster’s trophy drought goes on

Montpellier lift Challenge Cup as routed Ulster’s trophy drought goes on

BILBAO, Spain, May 22 : Montpellier ended Ulster’s hopes of their first trophy in two decades with a commanding 59-26 European Challenge Cup final win on Friday that saw them claim the title for the third time. Ulster made the brighter start, with captain Nick Timoney crossing early, but their momentum was quickly undone by errors that Montpellier exploited with clinical efficiency. Tries from Gabriel N’Gandebe and Donovan Taofifenua turned the tide, and although Cormac Izuchukwu struck back to keep Ulster in touch, the French side steadily asserted control. Montpellier’s power and precision began to tell before halftime, with Billy Vunipola and Alex Becognee both crossing to open a 26-12 lead at the break. Their ability to convert pressure into points exposed Ulster’s frailties and left the Irish club chasing the game. Montpellier pulled clear with a decisive burst in the second half. Taofifenua got his second try before Lenni Nouchi added another, stretching the lead beyond reach with Domingo Miotti’s assured kicking proving a constant source of punishment. Ulster put up brief resistance through …

Gardening Experts Share Why You Should Check Leaves In Your Garden

Gardening Experts Share Why You Should Check Leaves In Your Garden

As we head into summer, your garden might start to suffer from a lack of sweet H2O. There are some tests you can run to make sure your grass is getting all it needs, though. Placing a pan of water on your lawn will tell you how much has evaporated from your soil, while footprints that stay imprinted on your garden long after you’ve strolled over it might mean it’s on the verge of drying out. Additionally, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) said that looking at your leaves in the morning could help gardeners evaluate their hydration situation. Why should I look at my leaves in the morning? The RHS stressed that “Established trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials in beds and borders will only need watering in extreme drought,” adding you should only water the most stressed plants in these cases. And one of the signs of that dehydration-related stress shows in their leaves, they added. “Drooping leaves, especially in the early morning, often indicate drought,” they advised. The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery said that …

Golf-Rai’s Knockout Punch in Rocky’s Backyard Ends Century-Long English Drought at PGA Championship

Golf-Rai’s Knockout Punch in Rocky’s Backyard Ends Century-Long English Drought at PGA Championship

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pennsylvania, May 17 (Reuters) – Down the road from the city that produced one of Hollywood’s ultimate underdog stories, Aaron Rai wrote an equally inspiring script at the PGA Championship on Sunday, delivering the knockout punch to become the first Englishman to win the Wanamaker Trophy since 1919. Rai came into the week a little-known long shot to win but emerged from a packed leaderboard on one of golf’s biggest stages and was the last man standing at Aronimink Golf Club just outside Philadelphia. “To be standing here is definitely ‌outside of my wildest imagination,” said Rai, the first player ‌in PGA Championship history to lower his score in each round. Rai pulled away from the chasing pack with four back-nine birdies, including a 68-footer at the par-three 17th that delivered the knockout blow, en route to a five-under-par 65 that left him at nine under on the week and three shots clear of Jon Rahm (68) and Alex Smalley (70). When Rai’s final putt dropped there were still two pairings on the course, …

U.S. Wheat Crop Forecast To Hit Half-Century Low As Drought Hits Breadbasket

U.S. Wheat Crop Forecast To Hit Half-Century Low As Drought Hits Breadbasket

Chicago wheat futures surged on Tuesday, hitting two-year highs after the USDA’s latest WASDE report signaled a much tighter U.S. supply outlook than traders had anticipated. Production stress across America’s breadbasket is now converging with a megadrought and mounting fertilizer constraints, adding upward pressure on prices at a time when global food prices are rising. 🌾Due to poor crop health and a record-low planted area, the United States will produce the smallest wheat volume since 1972. 2026 winter wheat output (67% of total output) by class is seen at the lowest levels since:All winter: 1965Hard red winter: 1957Soft red winter: 2020 pic.twitter.com/OcIP3DA0VS — Karen Braun (@kannbwx) May 12, 2026 The USDA forecast 2026/27 U.S. all-wheat production at 1.56 billion bushels, sharply below Wall Street expectations of around 1.74 billion, marking the smallest harvest since 1972. 🇺🇸The U.S. in 2026 is set to harvest the smallest wheat crop in 54 years. Weather has challenged winter wheat this year and condition ratings have plunged. Pairing low yield with low planted area, USDA projects the smallest U.S. winter …
