A care home nurse has been suspended after a tribunal found she went to work drunk and needed help from her colleagues to book a taxi home. Karen Jane Makinson, 59, was “extremely intoxicated” during a shift at Church House Nursing Home in Nantwich, Cheshire, in June 2024, putting residents at a “significant risk of harm”, a Nursing and Midwifery Council panel found. She was swaying as she walked through the 44-bed nursing home, which provides care for residents with dementia, according to the panel. She was dismissed 10 days later. Ms Makinson denied the allegations. Giving evidence to the tribunal, her colleagues described how she laughed at things that were not funny and struggled to walk downstairs. Robert Hammond, the care home manager, said he took her car keys from her after refusing to let her drive home, adding that a senior carer had to help her order a cab because she “simply could not co-ordinate to move her fingers on her phone to book a taxi home”. It was just three years ago when Bela Bajaria revealed the internal label for Netflix’s programming ideal, the gourmet cheeseburger. Evoking populist fare with a garnish of prestige, it seemed like the only dining-related descriptor the TV industry would ever need. But there’s a new moniker on the rise, which I learned when a screenwriter friend recently shared their concerns about a project never getting out of development. The rationale? “Oh, they’re only buying white wine thrillers.” This trio of words is so evocative that it barely needs a definition. Let’s establish one, just to be safe. A white wine thriller can get dark but not too dark. The body count is kept low. One, two murders tops. There must be aspirational elements, typically wealthy characters wearing Brunello Cucinelli while emotionally unraveling in Nancy Meyers-worthy kitchens. White wine thrillers are often adaptations of books. And, pivotally, they are centered on female protagonists and marketed with a female audience in mind. The characters may drink white wine. Atticus Bartlett died in hospital after collapsing at his family home in Chard, Somerset, on July 16, 2022. His father, Tony Bartlett, 39, of Axminster, Devon, was convicted of murder following a trial at Bristol Crown Court. The jury found Bartlett violently shook Atticus, causing severe internal injuries to the baby’s brain and spinal cord. Mr Justice Cavanagh jailed Bartlett, formerly a postman, for life and ordered him to serve a minimum of 18 years in prison. A disgruntled garage customer has been jailed after stealing a 24-tonne bulldozer and going on an £8,000 destruction spree across Wolverhampton following a dispute over his car. Darren Coffey, 41, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he took the £385,000 Caterpillar machine from his employer on November 8 last year. He then drove it on a rampage lasting nearly three hours across the city, causing widespread chaos between 5.30pm and 8.15pm. Wolverhampton Crown Court heard Coffey’s dangerous run only came to an end after he smashed into a Royal Mail lorry, which police had commandeered and positioned as a roadblock in an attempt to stop him. Before that, he had torn through Wolverhampton along major routes including the A454, the city ring road, Willenhall Road and Willenhall town centre, causing disruption and damage along the way. At least 13 people were hospitalized after an impaired driver struck revelers at a parade celebrating the Lao New Year in Louisiana, officials said. The car struck “multiple pedestrians” Saturday afternoon at the corner of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road in Broussard, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office told NBC News. The 57-year-old driver was arrested. Broussard is located about 8 miles southwest of Lafayette and near the city of New Iberia. “Several individuals sustained injuries, some of which are believed to be serious,” the sheriff’s office said. The crash happened during a Lao New Year event celebrating the Buddhist new year.
