Greece Wants Durable Solution to Ensure Free Shipping in Hormuz Strait

Greece Wants Durable Solution to Ensure Free Shipping in Hormuz Strait

ATHENS, March 17 (Reuters) – Greece does not back any separate deals that would allow ships to enter and exit the Strait of Hormuz but wants ‌a durable solution to ‌safeguard peace in the region, its Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said on Tuesday. “We do not think that it is optimal to have separate agreements, so that ships enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz,” Gerapetritis told reporters alongside his German counterpart Johann  Wadephul in Berlin. “What we want is a well-established lasting solution, which will ensure peace and this can only be done under a wider alliance and under the auspices of international organizations and in particular the United Nations,” he said. Greece is a dominant force in global shipping, controlling one of the world’s largest merchant fleets. Many ships that are Greek owned or managed are in the wider Gulf area, with crews including dozens of Greek seafarers. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz – a vital gateway for about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas trade – has been disrupted amid the …

YETI built its reputation on containers that refuse to quit. Now your favorite Austin-based cooler (and insulated bottle and beach chair) company has leveraged that legacy and a strategic acquisition to build its first hiking pack. Meet the Skala: a hauler that holds up through day hikes to summit pushes. See It We were given an exclusive sneak peek at the Skala in September 2025, when a group took it along the switchbacks of the Wildflower Trail to Teton Village in Jackson Hole, Wyoming [shown at the top of the page]. The first thing we noticed was the robust RipZip opening—a Y-shaped, tri-zip, easy see-it-all access point that lets you simply pull and peel to swap a layer or grab a protein bar without excavating your whole kit. Why rummage when you can reveal? It’s an innovation we’ve already praised on the YETI Ranchero everyday …

How Overcoming Insecurity Builds Durable Human Relationships

How Overcoming Insecurity Builds Durable Human Relationships

George Clooney projects confidence. On screen, he has played the compassionate pediatrician Doug Ross (ER), the suave conman Danny Ocean (Ocean’s Eleven), and the charming hero in many other films. In interviews, Clooney comes across as surprisingly down-to-earth, a good father, and deeply invested in his relationship with his wife, Amal (née Alamuddin), a prominent human rights attorney and activist. However, in one recent interview with The Atlantic, Clooney opened up about feeling inadequate when comparing himself to his wife. Though he may be a charismatic and well-respected actor and director, he began to feel as though she would eventually grow tired of his charm and recognize his shortcomings. The feeling nagged at him and began to eat away at his confidence. He eventually found himself reading international law journals at night and listening to lectures from Oxford University to become more of an active participant in conversations with her associates and friends. He wanted to show her that he could match her intellect and ability to analyze the nuances of international politics. His admission …

Scientists convert cigarette butts into new material for fast, durable energy storage

Billions of cigarette butts end up on sidewalks, beaches, and gutters each year. They are small, easy to ignore, and hard to clean up. Over time, they can also leak toxic chemicals into soil and water. A new study suggests this familiar trash could become something far more useful: a high-performance material for fast, durable energy storage. Scientists from Shenyang Agricultural University report that they can convert discarded cigarette butts into an advanced carbon material that works as a strong electrode for supercapacitors. The study describes a process that turns the filters into nitrogen and oxygen co-doped nanoporous biochar. In lab tests, the material stored large amounts of charge, charged quickly, and stayed stable through thousands of cycles. “Our work shows that cigarette butts are not just a pollution problem, but also a valuable carbon resource,” said corresponding author Leichang Cao. “By converting them into functional porous carbon materials, we can address waste management while supporting clean energy technologies.” SEM images of (a) H-hydrochar, (b) CNPB-600-4, (c) CNPB-700-1, (d) CNPB-700-2, (e) CNPB-700-3, (f) CNPB-700-4, (g) …

Microsoft taps India’s Varaha for durable carbon removal offtake

Microsoft taps India’s Varaha for durable carbon removal offtake

Microsoft has signed a deal with Indian startup Varaha to buy more than 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal credits over the next three years, through 2029, expanding its portfolio of carbon removal projects as the tech giant scales up AI and cloud operations. The project will turn cotton crop waste, which is often burned after harvest, into biochar — a charcoal-like material that can be added to soil, storing carbon for long periods while also helping reduce air pollution from open-field burning. It will initially focus on the western Indian state of Maharashtra and involve around 40,000–45,000 smallholder farmers. The agreement comes as large corporations, including Microsoft, ramp up spending on carbon removal — projects designed to physically remove carbon dioxide from the air. The Redmond-based software maker is working toward its goal of becoming carbon-negative by 2030. However, Microsoft’s total greenhouse gas emissions rose 23.4% in fiscal year 2024 from a 2020 baseline, primarily driven by value-chain emissions linked to its growing cloud and AI business. Microsoft has not yet reported on its …
